Soft Hardware, Flowing Software: Reconfigurable Microfluidics for Adaptable Chemical Computation.

Chemical and physical computing systems promise information processing in performance regimes inaccessible to conventional electronics. However, they are typically constrained by static hardware architectures that limit adaptability and computational richness. Here, we introduce a reconfigurable microfluidic platform where soft hydrogel structures are 3D-printed and erased in situ to dynamically reshape the physical environment in which chemical computation occurs. By treating microfluidic geometry as an active, programmable element rather than a passive container, we demonstrate hardware-reco

Computational modeling of vacuum-assisted delivery: biomechanics of maternal soft tissues.

Childbirth is a complex process influenced by physiological, mechanical, and hormonal factors. While natural vaginal delivery is the safest, it is not always feasible due to diverse circumstances. In such cases, assisted delivery techniques, such as vacuum-assisted delivery (VAD), may facilitate vaginal birth. However, this technique can be associated with a higher risk of maternal injuries, potentially resulting in long-term conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse or incontinence. This study investigates the biomechanical impact of VAD on maternal tissues, aiming to reduce these risks. A fin

Extracalvarial soft tissues in cranial computed tomography. Normal anatomy and pathology.

Computed tomography has emerged as the modality of choice for imaging soft tissues of the face and neck. However, the extracalvarial soft tissue anatomy has not been delineated. The CT appearance of normal anatomy and variants, including the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, muscle layers, and subgaleal space is described. A pathologic spectrum that includes congenital, inflammatory, traumatic, and neoplastic lesions is presented. When appropriate CT windows for viewing the extracalvarial soft tissues are utilized, significant clinical information may be provided.

Usefulness of computed tomography findings for predicting soft tissue sarcoma grades.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) constitute a heterogeneous group of tumors that originate from mesenchymal cells. Imaging plays an important role in the assessment of the oncological stage of STSs. Computed tomography findings facilitate the identification of the tumor location and margins in relation to the surrounding anatomic boundaries and thereby enable preoperative planning of tumor management. The histological grade is among the most important parameters that affect tumor recurrence and metastasis rates. However, the prediction of STS histological grades using CT characteristics has not yet

Computational characterization of the porous-fibrous behavior of the soft tissues in the temporomandibular joint.

The prevalence and severity of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders have led to growing research interest in the development of new biomaterials and medical devices for TMJ implant designs. In computational designs, however, the time and stretch direction dependences of the TMJ soft tissues behavior are not considered and they are frequently based on measurements taken from non-human species or from joints that differ markedly from the human TMJ. The aim of this study was to accurately characterize the porous-fibrous properties of the TMJ soft tissues by simulating previously published expe

Soft Electronics Enabled Ergonomic Human-Computer Interaction for Swallowing Training.

We introduce a skin-friendly electronic system that enables human-computer interaction (HCI) for swallowing training in dysphagia rehabilitation. For an ergonomic HCI, we utilize a soft, highly compliant ("skin-like") electrode, which addresses critical issues of an existing rigid and planar electrode combined with a problematic conductive electrolyte and adhesive pad. The skin-like electrode offers a highly conformal, user-comfortable interaction with the skin for long-term wearable, high-fidelity recording of swallowing electromyograms on the chin. Mechanics modeling and experimental quantif

Soft-tissue hemorrhage in hemophiliac patients. Computed tomography and ultrasound study.

Fifty-four hemophiliac patients underwent a total of 94 studies using computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, or both. Not only common bleeding sites such as the iliopsoas muscles but also several unusual sites were encountered: these included the iliac bone, bowel wall, mesentery, rectus abdominis muscle, retroperitoneum, bladder wall, and scrotum. Both modalities gave comparable results, and each was helpful in (a) establishing the diagnosis, (b) evaluating the extent of bleeding and its effect on adjacent organs, and (c) demonstrating regression after treatment.

Superiority of black-blood computed tomography over conventional computed tomography angiography in the identification of soft plaques: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Carotid computed tomography angiography (CTA) has limited diagnostic value in evaluating the vulnerability of soft plaques. This study compared conventional CTA and black-blood computed tomography (BBCT) in terms of image quality and the ability to diagnose carotid soft plaques. METHODS: Patients who underwent carotid CTA and magnetic resonance (MR) vessel wall examination were included in this prospective study. The image quality of plaques was evaluated through objective evaluation [CT values, image noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) based on C

Computational models reveal that intuitive physics underlies visual processing of soft objects.

Computational explorations of human cognition have been especially successful when applied to visual perception. Existing models have primarily focused on rigid objects, emphasizing shape-preserving invariance to changes in viewpoint, lighting, object size, and scene context. Yet many objects in our everyday environments, such as cloths, are soft. This poses both quantitatively greater and qualitatively different challenges for models of perception, due to soft objects' dynamic and high-dimensional internal structure, as in the changing folds and wrinkles of a cloth waving in the wind. Soft ob

Computational Investigation of the Chemical Bond between An(III) Ions and Soft-Donor Ligands.

The chemical bonding of actinide ions with arene and borohydride ligands is explored via quantum chemical methods to understand how the transuranium elements interact with soft-donor ligands. Specifically, the [An(C6Me6)(BH4)3] complexes (An = U, Np, and Pu) and their reduced congeners are studied. Density functional theory (DFT) shows that the metal-ligand interactions in the neutral complexes are governed by electrostatic interactions. Both DFT and complete active space (CASSCF) results show that as one moves from U to Pu, the 5f-orbitals are stabilized leading to a poorer energy match with

Accuracy of computer-aided prediction in soft tissue changes after orthodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: An accurate prediction in the soft tissue changes is of great importance for orthodontic treatment planning. Previous studies on the accuracy of the Dolphin visual treatment objective (VTO) in predicting treatment results were mainly focused on orthognathic treatment. The accuracy of Dolphin VTO prediction for orthodontic treatment is, however, poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Dolphin VTO prediction in soft tissue changes after orthodontic treatment by comparing the changes between predicted and actual values. METHODS: A total of 157 patie
