[Mechanism of development of space motion sickness].

Astronauts and scientists are scheduled to stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for three-month periods, and various problems r … ation of bones. In addition, serious problems arise during the time in space due to the symptoms of space motion sickness, caused by neuro-otological changes. Space motion sickness is experienced by nearly 70% of the first-time astronauts, in the form of such symptoms as nausea, and vomiting. It is said that space motion sickness develops at the time of adaptation of t …

Emesis and space motion sickness in amphibians.

Amphibians possess the ability to vomit in response to a variety of stimuli that provoke emesis in mammals. Pharmacological studies have establish that the ejection of gastric contents and the basic mechanism for vomiting have been phylogenetically conserved among these tetrapods. As part of on-going comparative studies on emesis in vertebrates, we previously documented that some postmetamorphic anurans and salamander larvae experience motion-induced emesis when exposed to the provocative stimulus of parabolic aircraft flight. However, more recent experiments suggest that there are strict cond

A predictive test for space motion sickness.

Eye torsion was examined in 13 astronaut subjects, tested during repeated episodes of 0 G and 1.8 G in parabolic flight aboard NASA's KC-135. Four findings are included. 1) A strong relationship between previous history of SMS and ocular torsional disconjugacy in novel gravitational states. 2) Responses were unchanged in 4 subjects retested a year later. 3) Ocular torsional disconjugacy scores increased as exposure to 0 and 1.8 G increased. This was particularly evident in subjects who had had SMS. 4) Torsional studies during 10 to 20 parabolas are required to accurately predict SMS. The hypot

Research strategies for motion and space sickness.

Research is urged for several motion sickness topics now receiving relatively little attention. The role of the area postrema, if any, is not completely resolved. The hypothesis that the cerebral spinal fluid might be a necessary neurochemical conduit should be confirmed or put to rest. It is surprising that the cerebellum, implicated more than 40 years ago, has not been reevaluated for its role in motion sickness in view of the explosion of new data on this structure. The sensory rearrangement theory, known by several names, needs direct experimental verification. One such experiment should d

Electrical vestibular stimulation and space motion sickness.

Electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) in dynamic balance condition was studied in order to search for a new provocative test of space motion sickness (SMS). SMS is usually attributed to a sensory conflict caused by exposure to microgravity. Vestibular information is conflicting but also unusual and insignificant. EVS is in accordance with this feature because it is not the adequate stimulus of the vestibular receptors. EVS was achieved by means of binaural electrical stimulation. Effects of EVS were potentiated by compelling the subject to maintain dynamic balance on a seesaw. The quantifica…

Space motion sickness: phenomenology, countermeasures, and mechanisms.

A summary of the incidence of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) in 27 Soviet cosmonauts who flew on missions varying from 2-185 d in the Salyut-6/Soyuz vehicle complex is presented. A questionnaire indicated that 88% (24) of the cosmonauts developed some type of "illusionary sensations" while 44% (12) presented some degree of SMS. The SMS countermeasures used in flight included an antihistaminic drug, pneumatic cuffs applied to the thigh region, application of lower body negative pressure, a head cap that restricted head movement while simultaneously providing force stimulus to the cervical antigrav…

Space motion sickness during 24 flights of the space shuttle.

The incidence and severity of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) were determined from 24 flights of the Space Shuttle. A standardized questionnaire developed at the NASA-Johnson Space Center (JSC) was administered to all crewmembers postflight during an oral debriefing with the examining flight surgeon. Cases of SMS were graded mild, moderate or severe using criteria developed at the JSC. The incidence of SMS during a first Shuttle flight for 85 crewmembers was 67% (57 cases). There were 26 mild cases (30%), 20 moderate (24%), and 11 severe (13%). Differences were found between males and females, cre…

Oculomotor function during space flight and susceptibility to space motion sickness.

Horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and saccadic eye movements (SEM) were studied in 18 subjects before and during five Space Shuttle missions to evaluate the effects of weightlessness and correlations between results and susceptibility to and actual presence of space motion sickness (SMS). Active sinusoidal head oscillation was the stimulus for VOR tests with vision (VVOR), with eyes shaded (VOR-ES), and VOR suppression (VOR-S). Eye movements were recorded by electrooculography and head position by a potentiometer. No pathological nystagmus or other abnormal eye movements were seen. No s…

Comparison of treatment strategies for Space Motion Sickness.

Treatment strategies for Space Motion Sickness were compared using the results of postflight oral debriefings. Standardized questionnaires were administered to all crewmembers immediately following Space Shuttle flights by NASA flight surgeons. Cases of Space Motion Sickness were graded as mild, moderate or severe based on published criteria, and medication effectiveness was judged based on subjective reports of symptom relief. Since October 1989, medication effectiveness is reported inflight through Private Medical Conferences with the crew. A symptom matrix was analyzed for 19 crewmembers tr…

Pharmacology in space. Part 2. Controlling motion sickness.

In this second article in the two-part series on pharmacology in space, Claire Lathers and colleagues discuss the pharmacology of drugs used to control motion sickness in space and note that the pharmacology of the 'ideal' agent has yet to be worked out. That motion sickness may impair the pharmacological action of a drug by interfering with its absorption and distribution because of alteration of physiology is a problem unique to pharmacology in space. The authors comment on the problem of designing suitable ground-based studies to evaluate the pharmacological effect of drugs to be used in sp

Space motion sickness medications: interference with biomedical parameters.

The possibility that drugs administered to Skylab 3 (SL-3) and 4 (SL-4) crewmen for space motion sickness may have interfered with their biomedical evaluation in space was investigated. Healthy volunteers received combinations of Scopolamine/Dexedrine for four days in regimens similar to those used in these missions. Urine samples, heart rate, body temperature, mood and performance were analyzed for drug-related changes. Twenty-four hour urine samples were analyzed by the same procedures as those used to analyze the flight samples. Hormone concentrations determined included cortisol, epinephri…

Space travel-associated motion sickness and its treatment.

On Earth, motion sickness is often just a nuisance that can spoil a car ride, fishing trip, or visit to an amusement park. In space, however, motion sickness can be hazardous. Vomiting due to motion sickness while in a space suit could lead to aspiration, poor visibility and damage to space suit systems. The effects motion sickness has on alertness and mental performance are undesirable when critical operations are underway. Although motion sickness has been an issue for space travellers since the beginning of human space exploration, the range of medications and routes of administration have

A Case Study of Severe Space Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness remains a significant and unpredictable problem during spaceflight. One of the major difficulties in understanding the etiology of space motion sickness has been a lack of data at the time the symptoms occur, i.e., immediately after entry into space and during return to Earth; in these phases of the mission is when critical operational tasks are performed. CASE REPORT: We report here the case of a crewmember who experienced severe motion sickness symptoms immediately after launching into space and for several days into the mission. Verbal reports recorded during an…

Subjective Vertical Conflict Theory and Space Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Space motion sickness (SMS) remains a troublesome problem during spaceflight. The subjective vertical (SV) conflict theory postulates that all motion sickness provoking situations are characterized by a condition in which the SV sensed from gravity and visual and idiotropic cues differs from the expected vertical. This theory has been successfully used to predict motion sickness in different vehicles on Earth. METHOD: We have summarized the most outstanding and recent studies on the illusions and characteristics associated with spatial disorientation and SMS during weightlessness,…

Motion and space sickness: intestinal and autonomic correlates.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of autonomic nervous system and gastrointestinal changes that occur during motion sickness. It is important to consider that motion sickness is a syndrome that can vary between individuals and within individuals and between and within motion sickness-inducing stimuli. Vomiting should be considered a discrete event of the motion sickness syndrome. Given so much variability in motion sickness symptoms, it should be expected that the physiological response to motion sickness will vary as well. This appears to be the case with the autonomic nervo

Mechanisms of selective attention and space motion sickness.

The neural mismatch theory of space motion sickness asserts that the central and peripheral autonomic sequelae of discordant sensory input arise from central integrative processes falling to reconcile patterns of incoming sensory information with existing memory. Stated differently, perceived novelty reaches a stress level as integrative mechanisms fail to return a sense of control to the individual in the new environment. Based on evidence summarized here, the severity of the neural mismatch may be dependent upon the relative amount of attention selectively afforded to each sensory input comp…

Clinical characterization and etiology of space motion sickness.

An inflight, clinically-oriented investigation of SMS was begun on STS-4 and revealed the following: compared to motion sickness on Earth, autonomic signs are significantly different in space motion sickness (SMS) vs. motion sickness (MS) in that sweating is not present, pallor or flushing may be present, and vomiting is episodic, sudden, and brief. Nausea may be present but is more often absent. Onset ranges from minutes to hours, plateaus, and rapidly resolves in 8-72 h with 36 h as average. Postflight reactions have been mild unless deliberately provoked in the early period of re-exposure t…
