Poor lysosomal membrane integrity in proximal tubule cells of haptoglobin 2-2 genotype mice with diabetes mellitus.

The haptoglobin (Hp) genotype is a major determinant of progression of nephropathy in individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM). The major function of the Hp protein is to bind and modulate the fate of extracorpuscular hemoglobin and its iron cargo. We have previously demonstrated an interaction between the Hp genotype and the DM on the accumulation of iron in renal proximal tubule cells. The primary objective of this study was to determine the intracellular localization of this iron in the proximal tubule cell and to assess its potential toxicity. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated a

Synthesis of cellulose impregnated copper nanoparticles as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for CN coupling reactions under mild conditions.

Highly efficient copper nanoparticles supported over nanocellulose have been prepared by a simple chemical reduction method. The cellulose was extracted from the inner stem of Hibiscus sabdariffa and used as a polymer matrix for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles. The formation of the nanoparticles was validated through different characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-vis spectroscopy (UV) and Energy dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX). Moreover the morphology of the cellulose supported copper nanoparticles was investiga

Copper accumulation in actinomyces druses during endometritis after long-term use of an intrauterine contraceptive device.

A 32-year-old woman carried a copper intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) or intrauterine pessar (IAP) for more than 5 years. She had acyclic menstrual bleedings and underwent a corpus abrasio after explantation of IUCD. The histological study of paraffin sections showed an actinomycotic endometritis with brown to black deposits in or around typical actinomyces druses, but there was no carcinoma. The electron microscopic study of these accumulations by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in TEM demonstrated copper deposits in the shell and matrix of these druses as well as inside the

Dipole-Bound-State Spectroscopy Reveals the Vibrational Structure of a Strongly Reorganized Radical and an Unusual Regime of Anharmonic Autodetachment.

Dipole-bound states (DBSs) are typically viewed as weakly bound spectroscopic intermediates near the electron detachment threshold. Here we demonstrate that a DBS can serve as both a high-resolution spectroscopic probe of an otherwise inaccessible neutral vibrational structure and a platform for fundamentally altered autodetachment dynamics. Using cryogenic photoelectron spectroscopy, nanosecond VIS + IR spectroscopy, and picosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging, we investigate the DBS of the deprotonated tropolone anion (Tp-). Direct photodetachment is dominated by severe Franck-Condon

Unraveling Si-doped DX centers in AlGaN-based UVC LEDs through 2D cathodoluminescence mapping.

AlGaN-based UVC LEDs are compact, mercury-free, and cover the full 200-280 nm range, making them ideal for medical, military, and industrial uses. However, their internal quantum efficiency remains low due to defects prevalent in Al-rich group III nitrides. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using 2D cathodoluminescence (CL) to identify defect types, Si-doped DX centers and their distributions in UVC LEDs. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) was employed to prepare cross-sectional samples, facilitating electron excitation from the side view to optimize CL signal c

On the interaction of vanadium species with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid.

The interaction of the VO2+ cation with meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) was investigated by electron absorption spectroscopy in aqueous solution at different pH values. The spectral behavior, complemented with a spectrophotometric titration, shows the generation of a [VO(DMSA)2]2- complex in which the oxocation interacts with two pairs of deprotonated -SH groups of the acid. It was also found that DMSA rapidly reduces VO3- to VO2+, which might be chelated by an excess of the acid. DMSA can also produce the partial reduction of a V2O5 suspension at pH=5.2. The results of this study sugg

Growth and characterization of branched carbon nanostructures arrays in nano-patterned surfaces from porous silicon substrates.

A method to grow branched carbon nanostructures arrays is presented. We employ the electron-beam-induced deposition method using a transmission electron microscope in poor vacuum conditions where hydrocarbons are present in the chamber. The hydrocarbons are attracted to the substrates by the local electric fields. Saw-tooth nano-patterns were made with a focused ion beam in porous silicon substrates with high porosity in order to create sites with high-local electric fields. We found that the adequate ion dose to create well-defined saw-tooth nano-patterns was between 8 and 10 nC/microm(2). Ra

Identifying Thermal Decomposition Products of Nitrate Ester Explosives Using Gas Chromatography-Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy: An Experimental and Computational Study.

Analysis of nitrate ester explosives (e.g., nitroglycerine) using gas chromatography-vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy (GC-VUV) results in their thermal decomposition into nitric oxide, water, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and formaldehyde. These decomposition products exhibit highly structured spectra in the VUV that is not seen in larger molecules. Computational analysis using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) was utilized to investigate the excited states and vibronic transitions of these decomposition products. The experimental and computational results are compared with those in p

Quantitative dark-field mass analysis of ultrathin cryosections in the field-emission scanning transmission electron microscope.

The availability of a cryotransfer stage, highly efficient electron energy loss spectrometers, and ultra-thin-window energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometers for the VG Microscopes HB501 field-emission scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) provides this instrument with the potential for high resolution biological microanalysis. Recent technical advances offer cryosections that are thin enough to take advantage of the analytical capabilities of this microscope. This paper first discusses the quantitative characterization of freeze-dried, ultrathin cryosections of directly frozen liver a

Identification of structures containing polyphosphate in Helicobacter pylori.

For the first time polyphosphate (poly P) granules have been detected in Helicobacter pylori organisms colonizing the gastric antrum as well as in organisms isolated from the same tissue. Poly P granules showed typical sublimation characteristics during exposure to the electron beam and chipped out of ultrathin sectioning. A prominent phosphorus signal was identified using elemental specific electron microscopy such as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and was localized to at least three different locations: the cytoplasm, the flagellar pole and in association with the cell membrane. Can Copper Nanostructures Sustain High-Quality Plasmons?

Silver, king among plasmonic materials, features low inelastic absorption in the visible-infrared (vis-IR) spectral region compared to other metals. In contrast, copper is commonly regarded as too lossy for actual applications. Here, we demonstrate vis-IR plasmons with quality factors >60 in long copper nanowires (NWs), as determined by electron energy-loss spectroscopy. We explain this result by noticing that most of the electromagnetic energy in these plasmons lies outside the metal, thus becoming less sensitive to inelastic absorption. Measurements for silver and copper NWs of different dia

Atomically Dispersed Nickel in Cerium Oxide Aerogel Catalysts Characterized Using Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy.

Catalytically active nickel-substituted cerium oxide (CeO2) aerogels, engineered to maximize yield in the water-gas shift reaction (WGS: H2O + CO ↔ H2 + CO2), are characterized using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). STEM shows that the architected CeO2 catalysts with Ni substituted at 2.5, 5, and 10 atomic percentage (at.%) contain atomically distributed Ni within the ∼7 nm CeO2 nanocrystalline domains that comprise the covalently bonded oxide network. The aerogels prepared at the two higher Ni

Opportunities from energy-loss near-edge fine structure analysis to track chemical and structural damage in zircon.

Zircon (ZrSiO4) is the oldest-known mineral of Earth and an ubiquitous silicate in geochronology. More specifically, the accumulation of alpha decay damage in zircon over time significantly affects its physical and chemical properties, and can lead to a disturbance of the ages measured in this mineral. Therefore, analytical tools that enable comprehensive structural and chemical information at the nanoscale in this compound are highly sought after. In this context, we explore the electron energy-loss fine structures resulting from the excitation of O1s and Si2p core electrons in zircon, which

HREM analysis of graphite-encapsulated metallic nanoparticles for possible medical applications.

High resolution electron microscopy has been applied to study the structure of metallic nanoparticles. These have sparked considerable interest as contrast agents in the field of biological imaging, including in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). Here, we describe a method of synthesizing sub-10nm superparamagnetic metal and alloy nanoparticles by reduction of metallic salts. Annealing at 900°C in a methane/hydrogen environment forms a thin graphitic-carbon shell which is expected to improve stability, biocompatibility, and functionalization. Subsequent high resolut

CuFe2O4@SiO2@L-arginine@Cu(I) as a new magnetically retrievable heterogeneous nanocatalyst with high efficiency for 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles synthesis.

A novel magnetic heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized through the immobilization of copper ions onto the l-arginine functionalized CuFe2O4@SiO2. The prepared catalyst was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX). The resulting catalyst was used in the ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of 1,2,3-triazoles via a one-pot three-component reaction of alkynes, alkyl halides, and sodium azides under green conditions within a sho

Photostability of the deprotonated forms of the UV filters homosalate and octyl salicylate: molecular dissociation versus electron detachment following UV excitation.

While common molecular anions show a strong propensity to undergo electron detachment upon UV excitation, this process often occurs in competition with molecular ion dissociation. The factors that affect the balance between these two major possible decay pathways have not been well understood to date. Laser photodissociation spectroscopy of the deprotonated forms of the UV filter molecules, Homosalate (HS) and Octyl Salicylate (OS), i.e. [HS - H]- and [OS - H]-, was used to acquire gas-phase UV absorption spectra for [HS - H]- and [OS - H]-via photodepletion from 3.0-5.8 eV. No photofragmentat

Symmetry-breaking charge separation in perylene diimide trimers: effects of aggregation and solvent polarity.

Symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) is a fundamental process in natural photosynthetic systems, serving as the primary trigger for electron transfer and ultimately leading to the formation of a charge separated state. This mechanism has also been leveraged in optoelectronic devices to minimize energy loss and improve solar energy conversion efficiency. However, in organic solar cell (OSC) studies, SB-CS has predominantly been observed in polar environments, and the roles of molecular aggregation in modulating this process remain unclear. Herein, we investigated the influence of aggrega

Preserving spatial and energy resolution in multi-dimensional hyperspectral image datasets via rigid image registration.

Monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy in advanced scanning transmission electron microscopes has become a powerful tool for probing local electronic and vibrational spectra in many materials. However, acquiring high-quality multi-dimensional hyperspectral image datasets remains challenging due to sample drift, low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and detector artifacts. These limitations often require shorter acquisition times to reduce their influence, which can in turn compromise the spatial and energy resolution of the final results. To overcome these challenges, we develop a new appr

Identifying the secondary electron cutoff in ultraviolet photoemission spectra for work function measurements of non-ideal surfaces.

Absolute values of work functions can be determined in ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) by measuring the minimum kinetic energy of secondary electrons generated by a known photon energy. However, some samples can produce spectra that are difficult to interpret due to additional intensity below the true secondary electron cutoff. Disordered absorbates on elemental metals add small intensity below the onset for the transition metal surfaces studied, which can be attributed to energy losses after photoelectrons are generated. In contrast, spectra from WO3-x films can produce multiple
