Spinal stenosis is common and presents in a variety of forms. Symptomatic lumbar stenosis occurs in approximately 10% of the population and cervical stenosis in 9% over age 70. Imaging is central to the management decision process and first-choice MR imaging may be substituted with CT and CT myelography. A review of the literature is presented with particular emphasis on the clinical-radiologic correlation in both neurogenic intermittent claudication and cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Advanced techniques promise improvements, particularly with radicular compressive lesions, but remain underu

BACKGROUND: Acrodysostosis is a rare syndrome characterized by peripheral dysostosis, nasal hypoplasia, and frequently mental retardation. Only two adult cases of acrodysostosis have been reported to have neurological symptoms.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report one additional adult case that presented with signs of spinal cord compression from spinal stenosis, and make the first histologic description in the literature of the bony anomalies seen in acrodysostosis. The patient had a T3 to T5 laminectomy and experienced a complete recovery.
CONCLUSIONS: Special attention should be given to these pat

Authors experience based on 15 cases of iatrogenic stenosis of spinal canal in thoracic and lumbar region. The stenosis was the sequelae of spondylodesis made for spinal tuberculosis, spondylolisthesis traumatic and idiopathic, spinal fractures and assimilation faults. The onset of signs of stenosis appeared from 1 to 7 years after the first operation. The treatment was operative in 8 cases, conservative in 7. The first gave the best results. Observation time was up to 14 years after the second operation.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism of high occurrence of cervical spondylotic myelopathy in the patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis and the relationship between these two diseases.
METHODS: Lateral radiographic plain films were made on 68 cases with degenerative lumbar spine stenosis 23 males and 45 females, aged 50.0 (22 - 69). The sagittal diameter of the spinal canal (a) was obtained by measuring the shortest distance between the middle point of the posterior margin of the cervical spinal body to the connective cortex of spinal process and vertebral lamina, the distance …

Stenosis of the spinal canal is a very frequent finding in achondroplastic patients. It is secondary to abnormalities of endochondrial ossification, which is responsible for formation of the vertebral bone structures, and, subsequently, to bone degeneration. Cervical stenosis (most frequently involving the first metameres and the craniospinal junction) is more common in children while thoraco-lumbar stenosis favors adults. The surgical indications for cervical stenosis depend mainly on the clinical evolution but also on neurophysiological data. In thoraco lumbar stenosis too, clinical data det…

1. In the lumbar spinal canal of the achondroplast there is decreased cross-sectional area. In addition the intervertebral foramina are narrow. These changes result in reduced area for the dural sac and exiting spinal nerves. 2. There is associated thoracolumbar kyphosis and a lumbosacral hyperlordosis. These sagittal plane changes result in increased tension on the dural sac and nerves. 3. With aging there is disc degeneration with disc space narrowing and osteophyte formation. In addition facet hypertrophy with osteophyte formation are common. These degenerative changes further reduce the si…

The value of computed tomography (CT) in cases of spinal dysraphism, spinal canal narrowing and widening, and spinal bony abnormalities is discussed. With further experience, CT may become a valuable modality for the diagnosis of spinal diseases.
