The Implementation of Mental Health Policies and Practices in Schools: An Examination of School and State Factors.

BACKGROUND: Poor mental health outcomes persist among adolescent youth. Secondary schools play a critical role in fostering positive mental health by implementing policies and practices grounded in evidence. The factors associated with implementation, however, are unclear. This study examines which school- and state-level factors are associated with improved implementation of mental health policies and practices at secondary schools across the United States. METHODS: US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data stemming from 3 datasets (School Health Policies and Practices, School Healt

Meeting the challenge of bioterrorism: lessons learned from West Nile virus and anthrax.

Hospital emergency departments (EDs) and ambulatory clinics may be the first to recognize illness related to a bioterrorist event. Every health-care institution must develop a weapons-of-mass- destruction (WMD) preparedness plan as part of its all-hazards disaster planning. As part of an all-hazards disaster plan, WMD preparedness should use the incident-command model to insure the required chain of command for effectively coordinating activities between hospital departments and external agencies. Preparedness for bioterrorism poses unique challenges. In the event of a biological attack, the h

Promoting sustainable responses to the US opioid epidemic with community-academic partnerships: qualitative outcomes from a statewide program.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose deaths in the United States have continued to increase at an alarming rate. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) distributed more than $7 billion between January 2016 and June 2020 to address the drug overdose crisis. The funds support evidence-based responses, including medications for opioid use disorder, and other prevention, treatment and recovery activities. Although the State Opioid Response (SOR) grants finance much-needed community level interventions, many of the services they support may not be sustainable, without ongoing a

Responding to the Fentanyl Overdose Crisis With a Tri-Government Incident Command Structure in Portland, Oregon, 2024.

CONTEXT: The increasing use of illicit fentanyl has contributed to a drastic increase in drug overdose fatalities throughout the United States. The rate of fatal fentanyl-related overdoses in Multnomah County, Oregon, was 1.6 times higher than the United States' average in 2022 and continued to rise in 2023. In January 2024, the Governor of Oregon, the Multnomah County Chair, and the Portland Mayor declared a 90-day tri-government emergency to augment and enhance the ongoing response to fentanyl use and overdose in Portland city center. EMERGENCY RESPONSE: Between January 31, 2024, and April

Implementing a Learning Collaborative Framework for States Working to Improve Outcomes for Vulnerable Populations: The Opioid Use Disorder, Maternal Outcomes, and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Initiative Learning Community.

The opioid crisis has impacted vulnerable populations, specifically pregnant and postpartum women, and infants prenatally exposed to substances, including infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Lack of access to clinical and social services; potential stigma or discrimination; and lack of resources for provision of services, including screening and treatment, have impacted the health of these populations. In 2018, using a systems change approach, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened an Opioid use

Health precautions for travelers to Mexico.

After Canada, Mexico is the most popular destination for Americans traveling outside the United States. As a developing country, Mexico presents numerous health hazards to American visitors, including the prevalent travelers' diarrhea (turista), from which 40% will suffer, and the less common typhoid, dengue, rabies, malaria, taeniasis, cysticercosis, and trichinosis. Environmental hazards, including sun, heat, high altitude, motion sickness, and accidents, also threaten the unwary traveler. In the event of illness or injury, Americans may find medical facilities unfamiliar and less well equip
