The sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) functions as the basal joint of the entire upper limb and must move in the proper pattern for normal scapular motion. Afferent sensations from joints, such as proprioception and pain sensation, are important for maintaining the proper motion and condition of joints. Detailed anatomical data are useful for discussing injuries or surgeries that impair the afferent nerve to the SCJ. Nerve branches to SCJs were examined on 12 sides, and the subclavian nerve was investigated on six sides to clarify whether it innervates this joint. On seven of the 12 sides, the SCJ

Posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint is a rare but serious and life-threatening injury. Case reports describing injury to mediastinal structures including the trachea, esophagus, and the great vessels from posterior displacement of the medial clavicle (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) have been discussed in the literature. It is important that radiologists are aware of the limitation of plain radiographs in detecting posterior SCJ dislocation and and that they carefully evaluate the soft tissues with CT imaging to exclude mediastinal injury.

Traumatic injuries of the sternoclavicular joint occur rarely and are mainly caused by an indirect trauma mechanism with high kinetic energy. Anterior dislocation is much more common than posterior dislocation, which may be associated with life-threatening injuries. The CT scan is the diagnostic tool of choice for accurate assessment of the injury and coexisting pathologies. The primary goal in anterior and posterior dislocations is an early closed reduction. In cases of redislocation after closed reduction of an anterior dislocation we recommend primary joint reconstruction on the basis of an

Author reports on three cases of recurrent non-traumatic dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint. The operation performed by them and the indication of the operation are described. He thinks it probable that this phenomenon develops frequently as a part of a general joint laxity.

An adult patient with isolated septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) caused by Staphylococcus aureus is described. The patient had no underlying diseases other than paronychia, which might have served as the portal of entry. Antibiotic therapy resulted in clinical cure but x-ray revealed progression of the destructive process.

Indirect injuries to the sternoclavicular joint can result in an internal derangement. The major injury is to the intra-articular disk. The condition is generally caused by indirect injury to the shoulder, and causes tenderness, mild swelling and a clicking sensation over the joint. An arthrogram may well prove helpful in diagnosis. The lesion is treated by simple disk excision.

BACKGROUND: Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) injuries in children are rare and frequently misdiagnosed. Due to the anatomy of the immature medial clavicle, many of these injuries are Salter-Harris type I/II physeal fractures rather than true joint dislocations-termed pseudodislocations. These injuries require careful diagnosis and tailored management to ensure safe and functional outcomes.
INDICATIONS: Surgical intervention is indicated in paediatric SCJ pseudodislocations with significant posterior displacement of the medial clavicular fragment, particularly when the posterior metaphys

This case presentation describes a technique for reconstruction of an acute posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation. The patient was a 37 year-old female who sustained a left posterior sternoclavicular dislocation after a fall. A curvilinear incision was made directly over the sternoclavicular joint. After reduction, a semitendinosus allograft was used to reconstruct the sternoclavicular joint in a figure-of-8 fashion through drill holes in the manubrium and the proximal clavicle and secured with suture tape. Sternoclavicular reconstruction with semitendinosis allograft provides a reliabl

BACKGROUND: Infections of the sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) respond poorly to nonoperative management and typically require resection. We examined presenting characteristics and outcomes after surgical management of SCJ infections, reviewing a 20-year single-institution experience.
METHODS: From January 1992 to December 2012, 40 patients (age, 57 ± 12 years; 70% male) underwent resection of an infected SCJ. Sternal infections after cardiac surgery were excluded. Clinical features, microbiology, recurrence, survival, and functional impairment were assessed. Infection was documented by the surge

BACKGROUND: Dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint is a rare injury that has a low incidence of signifcant long-term symptoms. Surgical reconstruction of the joint is indicated in patients with symptomatic, chronic anterior instability or with irreducible or recurrent posterior instability. There have been many reported techniques for stabilization of the joint, but few investigators have reported more than several cases. The ideal reconstruction has not been identifed.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to perform a systematic review of the available literature with the object

Infection of the sternoclavicular joint (SJI) is a rare problem accounting for approximately 1 % of cases of septic arthritis. Patients typically present with symptoms of localized pain lasting a period of several weeks with or without systemic signs of fever and chills. Confirmation is made by aspirating the joint, and broad spectrum antibiotics should be tailored to treat the identified organisms. SJI can be treated conservatively with intravenous antibiotics and repeat imaging, but surgical intervention is required if patients present with an abscess, osteomyelitis or mediastinitis.

Infection of the sternoclavicular joint due to Staphylococcus aureus occurred in 2 hemodialysis patients. Good results were achieved in both cases by applying appropriate antibiotic therapy. Sternoclavicular joint sepsis is rare. However, it is often associated with underlying conditions, and hemodialysis must be recalled as one of the possible predisposing factors.

Unilateral and bilateral sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) dislocations are rare injuries. The difficulty in assessing this condition often leads to delay in diagnosis and treatment. We report a rare case of bilateral asymmetrical traumatic SCJ dislocations in a 45-year-old male. The right anterior SCJ dislocation was reduced in the emergency room (ER) and resulted in residual instability. The left posterior SCJ dislocation was asymptomatic and unnoticed for six months. It is important for ER physicians and orthopaedic surgeons to be able identify and treat this condition. All suspected SCJ disloca

Traumatic sternoclavicular (SC) joint injuries are rare. The goal of this literature review was to evaluate the available literature on the treatment of traumatic anterior and posterior SC (fracture-) dislocations in adults and children. In adults, anterior dislocations are most commonly treated by nonoperative means. Closed reduction can be attempted but is associated with a high recurrence rate. For posterior dislocations, closed reduction is usually more successful. Children usually present with displaced physeal fractures, as true dislocations probably do not occur in a skeletally immature

A 23-year-old man presented to our sports medicine clinic with a history of nontraumatic left anterior chest pain. Prior to presentation, a magnetic resonance image (MRI) had been performed that showed increased signal in the soft tissues around the sternoclavicular joint, primarily in the pectoralis major, and a small amount of fluid in the joint, thought possibly consistent with sympathetic effusion from a muscle tear. On examination, the patient was toxic appearing and had severe pain with virtually any left upper-extremity movement and with walking. There was swelling, redness, warmth, and
