Tenderness over the sternum is a clue for possible sternal fracture. Sternal fractures usually occur at the body or manubrium. Lateral chest radiography could detect a sternum fracture, but the diagnosis is usually made by chest tomography. Traumatic sternum fracture considered as a marker of seriously life-threatening, high-energy injury. In hyperlipidemia, oxidized lipids accumulate in vascular tissues and trigger atherosclerosis. Such lipids also deposit in bone tissues where they may promote osteoporosis. In the literature, there is no previously reported traumatic sternal fracture due to …

The authors report the clinical case of a female black infant, one month 22 days old, with sternal malformation (complete sternal cleft). She didn't show other associated malformations. Early surgical repair was done with success. The relevant nomenclature of sternal defects is discussed.

The author presents his experience with computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of sternal anomalies. The normal anatomy of the sternum and the peristernal soft tissues are described. The embryology, pertinent to the understanding of congenital sternal anomalies, is reviewed. The technique used to image the sternum is briefly explained. Variants of the sternum, traumatic changes, iatrogenic alterations, inflammation, and neoplastic lesions are illustrated. It is concluded that CT offers definite advantages in the evaluation of presumed sternal pathology and should be the examination of choic…

The sternal cleft is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from a fusion failure of the sternum, generally observed at birth and asymptomatic. Surgery is indicated to protect the heart and major vessels from trauma, to improve respiratory dynamics, and for aesthetic reasons. We observed 2 neonates for a superior and medial thoracic mass. The defect involved the upper two thirds of the sternum. The surgical operation for both patients consisted in the primary closure of the defect.

Cleft sternum is a rare congenital defect of the anterior chest wall and is the result of a failed midline fusion of the sternum. Depending on the degree of separation, there are complete and incomplete forms. Its clinical significance is that it leaves the heart and great vessels unprotected. Association with craniofacial hemangiomas and omphalocele is common. Prenatal diagnosis by ultrasonography is possible. Surgical correction should be performed during the neonatal period when the direct suturing of the sternal halves is possible and the thorax can accommodate the thoracic viscera. At an …

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign but locally destructive lesion of the bone characterized by the presence of spongy or multi-loculated cystic tissue filled with blood. It accounts for 2.5% of all bone tumors. An ABC may involve almost any bone, but the most frequent sites are long tubular bones and vertebrae. The sternum is a rare location for an ABC. Here we present a case with sternal ABC, discuss the clinical manifestations and treatment, and review the literature. Radical wide resection of primary sternal tumors and reconstruction with appropriately rigid prosthetic material are nece…

Dermoid cysts are lesions located in the subcutaneous tissue, containing epidermis and epidermal appendages and being common found in the head and neck. However, such lesion can be found in other parts of the body. The present case, shows an atypical presentation of a giant dermoid cyst on the sternum of a child. Although atypical, the dermoid cyst must be considered in the diagnosis of sternal masses.

The authors give a short description of the frequency and types of the rare deformities of the sternum. Following a detailed presentation of the various methods of treatment, three of their own observations, one of them an ectopia cordis, are given as case-reports. Two of these patients have already been observed over a long period.
