Stifle arthrodesis in a feline pelvic limb amputee.

CASE SUMMARY: A domestic shorthair cat presented to the Animal Referral Hospital (Brisbane, Australia) after having the left pelvic limb incorrectly amputated. The cat was unable to ambulate on the remaining right pelvic limb due to a chronically subluxated stifle. A stifle arthrodesis was performed on the right pelvic limb to manage the injury. Follow-up radiographs performed 5 months postoperatively demonstrated stifle arthrodesis with no detectable complications. The owner reported that aside from some difficulties in toileting, the cat had a good quality of life and was capable of performi…

Management of severe stifle trauma: 2. Periarticular fractures.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Periarticular stifle fractures are uncommon but challenging injuries to treat. There may be concurrent damage to the ligaments and stabilising structures of the stifle joint itself, which should also be evaluated (see Part 1 of this article series). Improved knowledge of the fixation options and biomechanical challenges of these injuries will aid clinical decision-making and effective repair. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Due to their nature, periarticular fractures may have small juxta-articular fragments, which require additional thought to address during stabilisation. In juven…

Characterization of the Ligamentum Mucosum in the Feline and Canine Stifle.

In humans, the ligamentum mucosum (LM) is described as a ligamentous structure originating from the femoral intercondylar notch and inserting into the infrapatellar fat pad. Proposed clinical implications include knee stabilization, contribution to post-operative revascularization of adjacent structures, and causation of anterior knee pain if inflamed. Published reports of the LM are rare in dogs and, to our knowledge, none exist for cats. Because common veterinary gross anatomy texts omit the LM from their descriptive anatomy of the stifle, students sometimes mistake the LM for the cranial cr…

Cytokine mRNA expression in synovial fluid of affected and contralateral stifle joints and the left shoulder joint in dogs with unilateral disease of the stifle joint.

OBJECTIVE: To examine mRNA expression of cytokines in synovial fluid (SF) cells from dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture and medial patellar luxation (MPL) and determine mRNA expression for 3 joints (affected stifle, unaffected contralateral stifle, and left shoulder joints) in dogs with unilateral CrCL rupture. SAMPLE POPULATION: 29 stifle joints with CrCL rupture (29 dogs), 8 stifle joints with MPL (7 dogs), and 24 normal stifle joints (16 clinically normal dogs). PROCEDURES: Immediately before reconstructive surgery, SF was aspirated from the cruciate-deficient stifle joint…

Stifle Joint Arthrodesis for Treating Chronic-Osteoarthritis-Affected Dogs.

A two-year-old male Pomeranian dog was presented to a veterinary hospital due to the side effects of a surgical correction for patellar luxation. Stifle joint arthrodesis (SJA) was performed on the patient's right leg using autologous bone-grafting techniques. The right femur and tibial joint were angled 120-130°, and an SJA plate was fixed on the front of the two bones. After performing joint fusion of the right limb, medial-patellar-luxation-(MPL)-corrective surgery was performed to cut the tibial tuberosity on the left leg, and the fixing force was increased using the figure-of-eight-tensio…

Osteochondrosis in the feline stifle: a case series and literature review.

Case series summaryInformation is presented on six new cats with stifle osteochondrosis (OC). In the veterinary literature, there are only four single case reports on cats with this condition. Combining the six new cases with the four previously published cases, we have summarised the current knowledge on stifle OC in the cat. Overall, among the 10 cats, the condition was bilateral in three cats and unilateral in seven. The mean age at presentation was 10.5 months (median 7). Seven cats were male, of which six were castrated, and the three female cats were spayed. Of the cats, five were domest…

Pressuring of Acupoints as a Complement to the Diagnosis of Stifle Diseases in Horses.

Diseases of the stifle joint remain a challenge for veterinarians. The objective of this study was to achieve a valuable acupuncture suggestive diagnosis to be considered for stifle joint diseases in horses. Thirty-nine nonlame horses involved in different activities were assessed. Acupuncture was independently performed by two evaluators. Reactions of the animal when pressurizing the point suggestive of stifle disease (PSSD), Bladder-20 and/or Bladder-21, were considered as the inclusion criteria for inclusion in the stifle group (SG, n = 31), and the animals with no reactions were assigned t…

Evaluation of a positioning method for equine lateral stifle scintigrams.

BACKGROUND: The current lack of a standardized protocol for positioning of the gamma camera relative to the horse limb in a lateral stifle scintigram, and thus the reliance on subjective positioning, may be a cause of diagnostic error and inter-operator variability due to variations of the view angle. The aims of this study were to develop a reliable method to obtain a lateral scintigram of the equine stifle based on fixed anatomical landmarks and measure the resulting foot to gamma camera angle on sequential measurements of the same horse and of different horses METHODS: Technetium filled ca…

Stifle lameness in the horse: a survey of 86 referred cases.

The clinical and radiological characteristics of stifle lameness in 86 horses are described. The majority of these cases had been lame for some weeks before referral. The most frequent diagnoses made were osteochondrosis dissecans (13 per cent) and subchondral bone cyst (38 per cent). Both of these conditions were seen principally in Thoroughbreds at or before the onset of training. The other bone lesions encountered were osteoarthritis (3 per cent), fractures (4 per cent) and "epiphysitis" (1 per cent). The commonest soft tissue condition was an atypical or partial upward fixation of the pate…

Stifle arthrodesis in dogs using semi-circular saw: Cadaveric study.

The aim of this study was to develop a novel surgical technique for stifle arthrodesis in dogs using a semicircular saw for tibial and femoral ostectomies through a medial approach. Ten pelvic limbs from five canine cadavers underwent stifle arthrodesis. Prior to the surgical procedure, the limbs were radiographed to rule out musculoskeletal abnormalities. Additionally, the radiographs were used for surgical planning. For the tibial ostectomy, the center of the intercondylar eminences, the cranial limit of the tibial plateau, and the caudal cortex of the tibia were used as landmarks. In the fe…

Deep learning-based diagnosis of stifle joint diseases in dogs.

In this retrospective, analytical study, we developed a deep learning-based diagnostic model that can be applied to canine stifle joint diseases and compared its accuracy with that achieved by veterinarians to verify its potential as a reliable diagnostic method. A total of 2382 radiographs of the canine stifle joint from cooperative animal hospitals were included in a dataset. Stifle joint regions were extracted from the original images using the faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) model, and the object detection accuracy was evaluated. Four radiographic findings: patella…

Arthroscopic-assisted management of osteochondritis dissecans in the stifle of a cat.

An 11-month-old, male neutered, domestic short-haired cat presented for evaluation of sudden onset right pelvic limb lameness. Radiography showed features consistent with unilateral osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the lateral femoral condyle in the right stifle. Arthroscopic examination of the stifle was used to confirm the presence of an articular cartilage lesion and the presence of loose cartilage within the joint. The loose cartilage fragments were removed arthroscopically. One arthroscopy portal was extended into a limited arthrotomy, which was necessary to ensure complete debridement …
