Recurrent aphthous stomatitis consists on recurring oral ulcers of unknown etiology. Oral ulcers may be different in number and size depending on the clinical presentation, which also determines the time needed for healing. Moreover, there are factors associated to outbreaks but not implicated in its etiopathogenesis. When oral aphthosis has a known etiology, it is not considered as recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The severity and the clinical presentation helps in the differential diagnosis. Treatment is symptomatic in recurrent aphthous stomatitis while, if there is an underlying systemic dis

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common idiopathic intraoral ulcerative disease in the USA. Aphthae typically occur in apparently healthy individuals, although an association with certain systemic diseases has been reported. Despite the unclear etiopathogenesis, new drug trials are continuously conducted in an attempt to reduce pain and dysfunction. We investigated four controversial topics: (1) Is complex aphthosis a mild form of Behçet's disease (BD)? (2) Is periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) syndrome a distinct medical entity? (3) Is RAS as

OBJECTIVES: This study analyzed the oxidative stress status in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) in the presence and absence of active ulceration.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Oxidative stress was analyzed in peripheral mononuclear cells of 28 RAS patients with active ulceration and 29 controls. A further blood sample was collected from nine subjects randomly selected from the 28 RAS cases, during the period in which the patients did not have active oral ulceration. The reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels were measured in these sam

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common type of ulcerative disease of the oral mucosa. Despite its worldwide occurrence and the extensive amount of research that has been devoted to the subject, the etiology of RAS remains unclear. Nevertheless, several hereditary, nutritional, infectious and psychological factors have been associated with RAS. The aim of this case-control study was to assess the influence of psychological stress on the manifestation of RAS.
METHOD: Fifty patients were enrolled in the trial. Twenty-five RAS patients constituted the

Aphthous stomatitis is a common, recurrent, painful ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa. Cigarette smoking has been reported to protect against aphthous ulcers. To determine whether smokeless tobacco use also protects against aphthous ulcers, we examined the oral mucosa in 1456 professional baseball players, about half of whom were smokeless tobacco (ST) users. After controlling for the confounding effects of age, race, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and dental hygiene practices, ST use was found to significantly reduce the risk of aphthous ulcers among these healthy young men (od

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis consists of the presence of abrasions or ulcerations located on mucosae (oral or genital).
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article is to review the current literature providing the main causes related to recurrent aphthous stomatitis and insights into treatment and management of this clinical condition.
METHODS: Articles matching terms that correlated with "recurrent aphthous stomatitis" were searched on PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library and selected according to their pertinence.
RESULTS: Several forms of aphthous stomatitis have been described, bas

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS; aphthae; canker sores) is common worldwide. Characterised by multiple, recurrent, small, round, or ovoid ulcers with circumscribed margins, erythematous haloes, and yellow or grey floors, it usually presents first in childhood or adolescence. Its aetiology and pathogenesis is not entirely clear, but there is genetic predisposition, with strong associations with interleukin genotypes, and sometimes a family history. Diagnosis is on clinical grounds alone, and must be differentiated from other causes of recurrent ulceration, particularly Behçet disease - a sys

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a disease of unknown cause. To examine whether thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency is associated with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, we studied vitamin B1 levels in 70 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and in 50 members of a control group. The vitamin B1 level was determined as thiamine pyrophosphate effect on transketolase activity in red blood cell lysates. Low levels of vitamin B1 were detected in 49 patients but in only two members of the control group (p < 0.0001). These low levels were not associated with patient age, sex, or underlying disease cau

Recurrent oral ulceration is common and may present in childhood. Causes of recurrent oral ulceration are numerous and there may be an association with underlying systemic disease. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common underlying diagnosis in children. The discomfort of oral ulcers can impact negatively on quality of life of a child, interfering with eating, speaking and may result in missed school days. The role of the general dental practitioner is to identify patients who can be treated with simple measures in primary dental care and those who require assessment and treatme

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common oral mucosa ailment. This condition is frequently considered as idiopathic due to the doubts about its etiology, probably related to a minor immunological dysregulation in a context of genetic predisposition. However, ulcers that resemble recurrent aphthous stomatitis in some respects can be found in systemic disorders that must be ruled out for the differential diagnosis of SAR, particularly when they appear after adolescence and/or when associated lesions exist out of the oral cavity. SAR management lies on the elimination of predisposin

Aphthous ulcers are the most common oral mucosal lesions in the general population. These often are recurrent and periodic lesions that cause clinically significant morbidity. Many suggestions have been proposed but the etiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is unknown. Several precipitating factors for aphthous ulcers appear to operate in subjects with genetic predisposition. An autoimmune or hypersensitivity mechanism is widely considered possible. Sometimes aphthous ulcers can be the sign of systemic diseases, so it is essential to establish a correct diagnosis to determine suitabl

Involvement of the attached gingiva by aphthous stomatitis is considered uncommon. This report presents two cases in which patients with aphthous stomatitis developed ulcers on multiple mucosal surfaces, including the attached gingiva. The gingival ulcers began on the marginal gingiva and enlarged to form V- or U-shaped ulcers on the attached gingiva. Other disorders producing gingival ulceration were excluded on the basis of history, clinical features, bacterial culture, viral culture, and biopsy with routine microscopic study as well as direct immunofluorescence.

A review of the use of levamisole in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis is presented. While various uncontrolled clinical trials have demonstrated its effectiveness in increasing the time between episodes and shortening the duration of the ulceration, a series of double-blind trials have given conflicting results that have not entirely confirmed the open trials. Side effects, of which dysgeusia, hyperosmia and nausea are the most frequent, and the administration of the drug are also discussed.

The management of recurrent aphthous ulceration is discussed. It appears that the treatment of choice in mild to moderately severe aphthous stomatitis is repeated application of topical tetracycline hydrochloride. Viscous lidocaine (2 percent) provides symptomatic relief and is therefore a useful adjunct to therapy. Cyclical estrogens appear to be helpful in recurrent premenstrual aphthosis. Immune-regulating agents such as levamisole hold promise for the future.
