Streptococcus anginosus promotes gastric inflammation, atrophy, and tumorigenesis in mice.

Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) was enriched in the gastric mucosa of patients with gastric cancer (GC). Here, we show that S. anginosus colonized the mouse stomach and induced acute gastritis. S. anginosus infection spontaneously induced progressive chronic gastritis, parietal cell atrophy, mucinous metaplasia, and dysplasia in conventional mice, and the findings were confirmed in germ-free mice. In addition, S. anginosus accelerated GC progression in carcinogen-induced gastric tumorigenesis and YTN16 GC cell allografts. Consistently, S. anginosus disrupted gastric barrier function, pr…

Disseminated Streptococcus anginosus invasive infection with intracranial subdural abscess formation.

We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with disseminated Streptococcus anginosus invasive infection. Even under a maximal dose of susceptible antibiotics, her condition was complicated by pulmonary septic emboli and intracranial subdural abscess. Effective antibiotics and emergent surgical drainage were performed, but the sequelae of aphasia and hemiplegia remained. Underlying immunocompromised conditions of diabetes mellitus and monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance might partially affect the clinical course of invasive S. anginosus infection. Once the infection becomes invasive, i…

Colon Carcinoma Presenting as Streptococcus anginosus Bacteremia and Liver Abscess.

A collection of dead white blood cells within the liver is called a liver abscess, and pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is the most common type. PLA is commonly associated with biliary tract infections. However, in this case report, we present a rare cause of Streptococcus anginosus bacteremia and PLA which is associated with a carcinoma of the colon at the splenic flexure. The presentation mimicked a cholecystitis clinically, but the radio-imaging revealed a liver abscess. Blood cultures revealed an uncommon etiological agent, S. anginosus group which is otherwise a commensal in the human gut. In…

Sites of infection associated with Streptococcus anginosus group among children.

Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) are parts of normal flora of the oral cavity and associated with abscess forming in various sites on the body. Although the clinical features of infections caused by each member of the SAG in adults has been reported, it has not well been known in children. The aim of this study was to clarify the site of infections associated with individual SAG species among children. Medical records from March 2010 to July 2016 were reviewed at Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Medical Center. Any SAG species (S. anginosus, S. constellatus, or S. intermedius) isolated from cl…

Two cases of bacterial suppurative thyroiditis caused by Streptococcus anginosus.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare clinical condition. Streptococcus anginosus has a propensity of producing empyema in the head and neck. Here, we reported two cases of AST caused by S. anginosus. A 44-year-old man presented with anterior neck tender swelling and odynophagia for 12 days. He had thyrotoxicosis. He was initially diagnosed as thyroid cancer due to the misleading computed tomography report. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) yielded pus and neutrophils. S. anginosus was isolated from pus. After aspiration of abscess and treatment with sensitive antibiotics, he recovered unev…

Presumed hydrogen sulfide-mediated neurotoxicity after streptococcus anginosus group meningitis.

Hydrogen sulfide is an environmental toxicant and gaseous neurotransmitter. It is produced enterically by sulfur-reducing bacteria and invasive pathogens including Streptococcus anginosus group, Salmonella and Citrobacter. We describe putative focal hydrogen sulfide neurotoxicity after Streptococcus constellatus meningitis, treated with adjunctive sodium nitrite and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Intra-Abdominal Abscess and Primary Peritonitis Caused by Streptococcus anginosus.

INTRODUCTION: The Streptococcus anginosus group of bacteria are low-virulence bacteria existing as commensals in the oral flora and gastrointestinal tracts of humans. S. anginosus may spread to the blood in individuals with poor oral hygiene in cases of oral infections, such as gingivitis and tooth abscesses, that develop following the loss of mucosal unity. This may lead to infections in the whole body, primarily as brain and liver abscesses. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old male patient presented with complaints of nausea, vomiting, and diffuse abdominal pain. Diffuse abdominal tenderness a…

Streptococcus anginosus in the development and treatment of precancerous lesions of gastric cancer.

The microbiota is strongly association with cancer. Studies have shown significant differences in the gastric microbiota between patients with gastric cancer (GC) patients and noncancer patients, suggesting that the microbiota may play a role in the development of GC. Although Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is widely recognized as a primary risk factor for GC, recent studies based on microbiota sequencing technology have revealed that non-H. pylori microbes also have a significant impact on GC. A recent study discovered that Streptococcus anginosus (S. anginosus) is more prevalent i…

The clinical features of respiratory infections caused by the Streptococcus anginosus group.

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) play important roles in respiratory infections. It is ordinarily difficult to distinguish them from contaminations as the causative pathogens of respiratory infections because they are often cultured in respiratory specimens. Therefore, it is important to understand the clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of respiratory infections caused by the SAG members. The aim of this study is to clarify the role of the SAG bacteria in respiratory infections. METHODS: A total of 30 patients who were diagnosed with respiratory infections whi…

Nonclostridial gas gangrene due to Streptococcus anginosus in a diabetic patient.

Streptococcus anginosus was recently identified as a distinct species from the other members of Streptococcus milleri group (Streptococcus constellatus, Streptococcus intermedius). We report a rare case of nonclostridial gas gangrene caused by S. anginosus. A 62-year-old diabetic woman was admitted with gas gangrene of the perineal area. She had been taking her oral hypoglycemia medication regularly for 10 years, but the diabetes was inadequately controlled. She was treated with surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue, insulin injection, and antibiotic therapy, and had a satisfactory clini…

Streptococcus anginosus extracellular vesicles deliver protein to promote gastric cancer progression.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Although Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is considered a major etiological factor, only 3% of Hp-infected individuals develop GC, implying additional microbial drivers. Streptococcus anginosus (SA) exhibits independent pro-carcinogenic properties, but its mechanism in regulating GC malignant phenotypes remains elusive. This study investigated the roles and molecular mechanisms of SA-derived extracellular vesicles (SA-EVs) in GC progression. METHODS: SA-EVs were isolated and characterized, followed by in vitro a…
