Six Streptomyces strains were isolated from scab-infected potato tubers collected in the province of Quebec, Canada. All isolates produced disease symptoms characteristic of potato common scab. Multilocus sequence analysis showed that the strains clustered into two putative novel species-level groups represented by strains LBUM1542T and LBUM3076T. Two novel actinobacteria strains, designated YCB024T and YCB041T, were isolated from rhizosphere soil samples of Camellia oleifera collected from Xingning City, Guangdong Province, PR China. Mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous infection of the skin from which grains of the causative organism are eliminated via the sinus tracts. We report a rare case of cephalic mycetoma, which presented with an extensive involvement of the skull vault, base and an extradural granuloma. The diagnosis and treatment of the disease are discussed.

The capacity of Streptomycetes to carry out cyanide-resistant respiration was investigated. With the model strain, Streptomyces citreofluorescens, it was shown that deprivation of glucose followed by transition from exponential to stationary growth was coupled with declining sensitivity of cellular respiration to cyanide ions. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic status of an Atacama Desert isolate, Streptomyces strain C34(T), which synthesises novel antibiotics, the chaxalactins and chaxamycins. Streptomyces lydicus NRRL2433 and S. spectabilis NRRL2494 produce two inhibitors of bacterial RNA polymerase: the 3-acyltetramic acid streptolydigin and the naphthalenic ansamycin streptovaricin, respectively.
