Stuttering at school: the effect of a teacher training program on stuttering.

PURPOSE: Verify the knowledge of teachers from public and private schools about stuttering and attest the effectiveness of the Teacher Training Program on Stuttering in the expansion of this knowledge. METHODS: The study sample comprised 137 early-childhood teachers. Initially, the teachers responded to a questionnaire on stuttering. After that, 75 teachers attended a 4-hour Teacher Training Program on Stuttering. One month later, the teachers responded to the same questionnaire again. RESULTS: The following points were observed after the training program: increased percentage of teachers wh…

The Fifth Croatia Stuttering Symposium: Part II. Natural recovery from early stuttering.

PURPOSE: The Fifth Croatia Stuttering Symposium of 2022 continued the Fourth Croatia Stuttering Symposium 2019 theme of the connection between research and clinical practice. At the 2022 Symposium, there were 145 delegates from 21 countries. This paper documents the contents of the second of three Symposium modules. METHODS: The module topic was that some children with early stuttering will recover naturally. A clinical situation was considered where a parent of a 3-year-old child asked if a clinician can predict whether their child will recover from stuttering without treatment. RESULTS: A …

Connecting stuttering management and measurement: V. Deduction and induction in the development of stuttering treatment outcome measures and stuttering treatments.

BACKGROUND: The development of evidence-based practice, which is increasingly popular in stuttering treatment, is closely linked to the development of outcome measures. AIMS: Two approaches to the development of stuttering treatment outcome measures are outlined. The first is the deductive, top-down approach, where the development of specific outcome measures is guided by a priori general conceptualizations of the nature of the disorder. A competing approach to the development of stuttering treatment outcome measures is outlined. This is the inductive, or bottom up approach. This approach use…

Anxiety and neurophysiological correlates of stuttering severity in adults who stutter.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering has traditionally been conceptualized as a motor speech disorder; however, accumulating evidence suggests that auditory processing differences and emotional factors may also contribute to its clinical presentation. Despite increasing interest in these domains, the interplay between auditory cortical processing, stuttering severity, and anxiety in adults remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine auditory evoked cortical responses (P1, N1, P2, and mismatch negativity [MMN]) in adults who stutter compared with fluent-speaking controls, and to …

Immune response and stuttering: the potential link between cytokines and stutter.

OBJECTIVE: Stuttering is a common speech disorder among the general population, characterized by disruptions in the fluency of speech. Even if many studies have been managed on stuttering, the etiology has not yet been exactly explained. This article aims to assess the level of cytokines in patients who stutter to provide evidence-based guidelines for clinicians. METHODS: A total of 74 children, including 34 who were stutterers and 40 who were controls, aged 4-15 years were included. The children with stuttering completed the Stuttering Severity Instrument-3 (SSI-3) form. Serum concentrations…

The Effects of Written Stuttering Disclosure on the Perceptions of a Child Who Stutters.

Purpose This study measured between-groups differences in perceived speech skills and personality characteristics of a 12-year-old male child who stutters (CWS) as a function of a written factual stuttering disclosure statement, delivered by the CWS, his "mother," or his "teacher." Method Four hundred twenty-four college-age adults were assigned to one of four groups, including three experimental groups (i.e., written self-disclosure, mother-written disclosure, and teacher-written disclosure) and a control group (no written disclosure). Participants in the control conditions viewed a brief vid…

Stuttering and its treatment in adolescence: the perceptions of people who stutter.

UNLABELLED: Adolescence is a complicated phase of maturation during which a great deal of physical, neurological and social development occurs. Clinically this phase is thought to be the last chance to arrest the development of the disorder of stuttering before it becomes chronic in adulthood. However, little treatment development for this age group has occurred. Previous research on the impact of stuttering during adolescence presents a complex picture of apprehension about speaking which does not, however, appear to interfere with social life. The purpose of the present study was to investig…

Adult stuttering prevalence II: Recalculation, subgrouping and estimate of stuttering community engagement.

PURPOSE: Epidemiological research of stuttering has frequently focused on children, with a relative paucity of population level data specific to adults. Prevalence data for adults are reassessed here, including a breakdown of whether stuttering is overt or covert, and whether onset was in childhood or adulthood. The engagement of adults who stutter with stuttering communities is also estimated. METHODS: Prevalence calculations were based on data from studies having the strongest designs, following the systematic review of Gattie, Lieven & Kluk (2024, this issue). Original data for engagement …

A lifelong journey with stuttering: Experiences of adults who stutter in Türkiye.

This qualitative phenomenological study explored how adults who stutter in Türkiye experience stuttering across the life course and interpret their therapy experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten adults who stutter and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified: growing up with feelings of conditional acceptance, living under anticipated negative evaluation, and reconstructing agency in therapy. Participants described stuttering as a relational and context-dependent experience shaped by social expectations across childhood and a…

Fostering Positive Stuttering Identities Using Stutter-Affirming Therapy.

PURPOSE: School-age children and adolescents frequently have difficulty developing positive identities around their stuttering. Many students experience both physical and social consequences from stuttering. The great lengths that speakers go to try to hide their stuttering and to speak fluently increase their difficulty. As long as school-age children who stutter try to identify as fluent speakers, they will have difficulty lessening the negative impact of stuttering on their lives. Fortunately, many people who stutter also report positive stuttering experiences. Speech-language pathologists …

Tics and developmental stuttering.

BACKGROUND: Developmental stuttering affects 1% of the population but its cause remains unclear. Recent PET studies of metabolism in the central nervous system suggest that it may be related to dysfunction in the basal ganglia or its connections with regions of the cortex associated with speech and motor control. OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and characteristics of involuntary movements (IMs) in people who stutter and to investigate the hypothesis that these movements may be of a very similar nature to the IMs seen in patients with movement disorders due to basal ganglia dysfunction. …

Stuttering: a brief review.

The etiology of stuttering is controversial. The prevailing theories point to measurable neurophysical dysfunctions that disrupt the precise timing required to produce speech. Stuttering is a common disorder that usually resolves by adulthood. Almost 80 percent of children who stutter recover fluency by the age of 16 years. Mild stuttering is self-limited, but more severe stuttering requires speech therapy which is the mainstay of treatment. Delayed auditory feedback and computer-assisted training are currently used to help slow down speech and control other speech mechanisms. Pharmacologic th…

Long-term evaluation of psychosocial impact and stuttering severity after intensive stuttering therapy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term stability of objective and subjective psychosocial improvements and fluency more than 10 years after participation in an intensive stuttering therapy camp. METHOD: Ten former participants in intensive stuttering therapy (IST; mean age at time of intervention 14; 2 years) participated in this study. Outcomes of the IST at that time were assessed with the Stuttering Severity Instrument (SSI-3; Riley, 1994) and a questionnaire to measure the psychosocial impact of stuttering. A semi-structured video call and a general questionnaire f…

Adult stuttering prevalence I: Systematic review and identification of stuttering in large populations.

PURPOSE: Stuttering epidemiology is reviewed with a primary goal of appraising methods used to identify stuttering in large populations. Secondary goals were to establish a best estimate of adult stuttering prevalence; identify data that could subgroup stuttering based upon childhood versus adult onset and covert versus over behaviour; and conduct a preliminary assessment of the degree to which stuttering features as a co-occurring diagnosis. METHODS: Systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. Quality assessment was based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool, w…

Developmental stuttering, physical concomitants associated with stuttering, and Tourette syndrome: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Developmental stuttering and Tourette syndrome (TS) are common neurodevelopmental disorders. Although disfluencies may co-occur in TS, their type and frequency do not always represent pure stuttering. Conversely, core symptoms of stuttering may be accompanied by physical concomitants (PCs) that can be confused for tics. This scoping review aimed to explore the similarities and differences between stuttering and tics in terms of epidemiology, comorbidities, phenomenology, evolution, physiopathology, and treatment. We also described the nature of PCs in stuttering and dis…
