[Tumors of the submandibular gland].

The authors have analyzed 148 cases with submandibular gland tumors treated surgically in ENT Department of County Hospital Nr 1 in Rzeszów from 1974 to 1994. Inflammatory tumors occurred in 123 (83%) patients, in this number non-specific inflammation caused by calculi occurred in 120 (97.5%) patients and specific inflammations (tuberculosis) in 3 (2.5%) ones. Neoplastic tumors occurred in 14 (56.0%) patients and non-malignant in 11 (44.0%) patients. Among malignant tumors adenoid cystic carcinoma occurs most frequently (8 cases, 57%), whereas among non-malignant ones pleomorphic adenoma is mo…

Oncocytoma of the submandibular gland.

This report describes a case of oncocytoma, a rare, benign tumour which is particularly uncommon in the submandibular gland. The neoplasm was a chance finding in a gland which presented with recurrent swelling, assumed to be due to chronic sialadenitis.

A mucocele of the submandibular gland.

We encountered an unusual case of a mucocele arising from the submandibular gland. Among the limited number of cystic salivary gland neoplasms reported in the literature, there have been no reports, to our knowledge, of a similar cystic lesion. The unique characteristics of this mass permitted definitive diagnosis by computed tomographic scanning.

Lipoadenoma of the Submandibular Gland.

We report a case of an oncocytic lipoadenoma of the submandibular gland, which is a very rare benign tumor of the salivary gland. The patient was a 36-year-old man with a right submandibular mass measuring 29 × 1.3 × 1.2 cm. When the preoperative diagnostic tools were insufficient to rule out malignancy and for definite diagnosis, total removal of the gland was performed. Histopathologically, microscopic examination revealed a well-circumscribed tumor that is surrounded by a thin, fibrous capsule. The majority of the tumor consisted of adipocytes and normal components of salivary gland tissue.…

[Leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular gland].

INTRODUCTION: A leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor of the smooth muscle. Its malignancy is difficult to assess. Submandibular gland involvement is extremely rare. OBSERVATION: A 62-year-old patient was admitted with a primary leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular gland. He was treated by surgery and radiotherapy. The patient died 11 months later from pulmonary metastases. DISCUSSION: LMS of the submandibular gland is extremely rare. Its diagnosis is very difficult because of the non-specific clinical and radiological signs. The histological diagnosis often relies on immunohistochemistry. Trea…

Schwannoma of the submandibular gland.

Neurilemmomas (schwannomas) are solitary neurogenic tumors that arise from cells of the neural sheath. They are slow growing and represent a … nd originating from a peripheral branch of the facial nerve. An unusual case of neurilemmoma of the submandibular gland is presented, and the literature concerning this subject is reviewed. We believe this tumor originated in an autonomic nerve of the submandibular gland. The mass was discrete and well demonstrated on CT scan. Total excision of the gland resulted in …

Submandibular Gland Basal Cell Adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign epithelial tumour of the salivary gland majorly involving the parotid gland, and rarely the submandibular gland. CASE REPORT: We describe a rare case of BCA of the submandibular gland diagnosed preoperatively using fine needle aspiration cytology in a 60-year-old woman presenting with painless submandibular swelling. The surgery went uneventfully, and the histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: BCA can be accurately diagnosed only through histological observations due to its resemblance to various benign and …

Foreign Body of Submandibular Gland.

Obstructive adenitis is common disorder of submandibular gland. Sialolithiasis is the most common etiologic factor causing obstruction. If a sialolith is not detected, chronic obstruction of salivary glands is called nonspecific sialoadenitis. Foreign body-associated sialoadenitis of submandibular gland is very rare within the literature. In this study, the authors presented a patient having an unrecognized foreign body in the submandibular gland beside the duct that was causing chronic sialoadenitis. Foreign bodies must be explored and all suspected areas must be examined carefully for avoidi…

Unusually large submandibular gland stone.

Submandibular gland calculi is the most common disease of the gland. In this article, we report a case with unusually large stone located at the hilum of the gland causing necrosis of the overlying duct and the oral mucosa (floor of mouth).

Multiple bilateral submandibular gland sialolithiasis.

Sialolithiasis accounts for the most common etiology of salivary gland obstruction which leads to recurrent painful swelling of the involved gland which often exacerbates while eating. Stones may be encountered in any of the salivary glands but most frequently in the submandibular gland and its duct. Simultaneous sialolithiasis in more than one salivary gland is rare, occurring in fewer than 3% of cases. Seventy to 80% of cases feature solitary stones; only about 5% of patients have three or more stones, the case report which we are presenting here had three submandibular sialoliths involving …

Sebaceous lymphadenoma of submandibular gland.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare primary tumour of the salivary gland, benign in nature arising from differentiated Sebaceous glands and cells in the salivary gland. Most of the tumours are seen in the parotid gland and very rarely in the submandibular gland. Herein a case of sebaceous lymphadenoma is reported in a 45 years old female with a swelling in the submandibular region. Histopathological study after surgical excision showed islands of sebaceous epithelial cells with dense collections of lymphoid cells in stroma and a diagnosis of sebaceous lymphadenoma of submandibular gland was made.

[Submandibular gland excision. Clinical experience].

Submandibular gland excision is proposed for the treatment of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. This study examines four cases of patients who underwent submandibular gland excision performed by the transcervical approach: two cases of non-neoplastic disease (one sialolithiasis and one chronic sialoadenitis not correctly assessed by sonography), one case treated for chronic sialoadenitis who developed a non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving the oral mucosa, and one case with a benign neoplastic lesion (pleomorphic adenoma). The symptoms, physical findings, and diagnosis on pathological exa…
