Domino connector for thoracic pedicle subtraction osteotomy reduction: surgical technique and patient series.

PURPOSE: Different techniques have been previously described to close the pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) site for correction of sagittal malalignment; the use of a side-to-side domino connector as a correction tool in the thoracic spine has not been specifically studied. METHODS: Twenty adult patients who underwent single-level thoracic PSO from T1 to T12 were included and retrospectively reviewed (two centers). Preoperative and postoperative full-body X-rays, perioperative data, clinical data and complications were recorded with a minimum 2 years of follow-up. Surgical technique and the

Automatic classification of lung nodules on MDCT images with the temporal subtraction technique.

PURPOSE: A temporal subtraction (TS) image is obtained by subtracting a previous image, which is warped to match the structures of the previous image and the related current image. The TS technique removes normal structures and enhances interval changes such as new lesions and substitutes in existing abnormalities from a medical image. However, many artifacts remaining on the TS image can be detected as false positives. METHOD: This paper presents a novel automatic segmentation of lung nodules using the Watershed method, multiscale gradient vector flow snakes and a detection method using the

The use of MRI digital subtraction technique in the diagnosis of traumatic pancreatic injury.

Traumatic pancreatic injuries are relatively uncommon in the setting of trauma, however, early detection of these injuries can alter patient management and overall prognosis. Computed tomography is the first line imaging modality in major trauma. Because failure to recognize pancreatic or main pancreatic duct injuries can lead to mismanagement, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be a useful adjunct study in appropriate patients. In this report, we present a case in which MRI was used to diagnose traumatic avulsion and devascularization of the entire pancreas in a patient following a motor ve

Digital subtraction technique for evaluation of peri-implant bone change in digital dental imaging.

The purpose of this study was to investigate digital subtraction technique in digital dental imaging for implant performance, used to quantitatively evaluate bone change around dental implants. For longitudinal assessment of peri-implant bone change, we applied subtraction technique to digital peri-apical radiographs using a digital dental imaging system in two cases at the upper canine and premolar regions. In both cases, we found two peaks of bone change at the crestal region; we also quantitatively demonstrated a marked change over the first one-month period and approximately three-month pe…

Parathyroid imaging with pertechnetate plus perchlorate/MIBI subtraction scintigraphy: a fast and effective technique.

We set up a modified technetium-99m (Tc-99m) pertechnetate/Tc-99m MIBI (Tc-MIBI) subtraction scintigraphy for parathyroid imaging by introducing the use of potassium perchlorate (KCLO4). Initially, the effect of KCLO4 on technetium thyroid wash-out was evaluated in five healthy volunteers: 40-minute dynamic studies of the thyroid were obtained 20 minutes after the injection of technetium 150 MBq (4 mCi), both in baseline conditions and after the oral administration of 400 mg KCLO4. After an average latency time of 10.5 minutes, KCLO4 administration resulted in fast and relevant technetium thyr

[Dual-energy subtraction technique with FCR: clinical application for diagnosis of pulmonary vascular diseases].

The use of dual-energy techniques has already proved to be beneficial in nodule detection and characterization of the calcification in nodules. Other clinical applications, in which simplification of the background might lead to improved results, should be investigated. We evaluated the image quality of pulmonary vessels in the dual-energy techniques with FCR. In visualization of the pulmonary vessels of normal patients, dual-energy soft tissue images were equal or inferior to the original unsubtracted digital images because of increased noise. In the diagnosis of some pulmonary vascular disea

Application of a NotI subtraction and methylation‑specific genome subtractive hybridization technique in the detection of genomic DNA methylation differences between hydatidiform moles and villi.

Previous studies indicate that epigenetic modifications play an important role in transcriptional regulation and contribute to the pathogenesis of gestational trophoblastic disease, including complete hydatidiform moles (CHMs). However, the underlying mechanisms and the critical genes have not been clearly identified. In the present study, we developed a novel technique, NotI subtraction and methylation-specific genome subtractive hybridization (MS-G-SH), as a method of screening for methylation changes between hydatidiform moles and villi. Following NotI subtraction and hybridization, three d

Adrenal aldosterone-producing adenoma: use of colonic potential in diagnosis and subtraction scanning technique for localisation.

Primary hyperaldosteronism is a potentially curable cause of hypertension, and much interest has been shown in methods of diagnosing the associated hypokalaemic hypertension and localising the adrenal adenoma. In two patients the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism was confirmed by colonic potential measurement and the adenoma localised by a new subtraction technique for early adrenal imaging applied to the use of 131I-19-iodocholesterol. Both patients underwent adrenalectomy and in each case an adenoma was removed. Blood pressure and electrolyte levels returned to normal after operation. In on…

Validation of an ultrahigh contrast divided subtracted inversion recovery technique using a standard T1 phantom.

The divided subtracted inversion recovery (dSIR) is a high T1 contrast technique that shows changes in white matter in patients with traumatic brain injury and hypoxic injury. The changes can be explained by small differences in T1; however, to date, there has been no independent validation of the technique using a standard reference. The present study develops the theory of the dSIR signal and performs validation using the NIST/ISMRM T1 phantom. Non-idealities are explored, including the influence of noise bias and finite repetition time (TR), which leads to the introduction of an optimally e

Effect of Additive and Subtractive Coping Production Techniques on Retention and Marginal Fit of Implant Supported Crowns.

BACKGROUND: Despite statins and other medications central to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) secondary prevention, stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) patients remain at significant cardiovascular risk, partly due to residual inflammation risk (RIR). This study aims to assess if adding Guanxinning to standard ASCVD therapy further mitigates RIR in SCAD patients. METHODS: In a prospective, randomized, single-blind endpoint design, 50 patients with SCAD who received ASCVD standardized treatment strategy were randomly assigned to either take Guanxinning tablets (4 tablets, thric

Vascularization of head and neck paragangliomas: comparison of three MR angiographic techniques with digital subtraction angiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: MR angiography of the head and neck region has been studied widely, but few studies have been performed concerning the efficacy of MR angiography for the identification of the specific vascular supply of the highly vascular head and neck paragangliomas. In this study, we compared three MR angiography techniques with respect to visualization of branch arteries in the neck and identification of tumor feeders in patients with paragangliomas. METHODS: Fourteen patients with 29 paragangliomas were examined at 1.5 T using 3D phase-contrast (PC), 2D time-of-flight (2D TOF), a

[Pseudarthrosis and construct failure after lumbar pedicle subtraction osteotomy : Influence of biomechanics, surgical technique, biology and avoidance strategies].

There are numerous factors that can lead to construct failure and pseudarthrosis after corrective pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) in the lumbar spine. Frequently, several factors are of relevance in these problematic cases. This article attempts to explain the surgical, biomechanical and biological aspects that should be understood in order to minimize the risk of pseudarthrosis and construct failure. It addresses technical varieties of the PSO procedure as well as the surgical technique, the choice of rod material and the design of multirod constructs. Biological reasons for pseudarthrosi
