A seven-week stay in the Sudan in the winter of 1988/89 revealed the ophthalmological problems of this Third World country. As a result of the catastrophic shortage of local doctors, many cases of eye disease have progressed to terminal stages. Of 990 patients examined, 80% were unilaterally or bilaterally blind. The three main causes of blindness were cataract, trachoma, and glaucoma. The most effective treatment for these conditions was surgery. Operable cases were identified by a simple examination method, and a total of 330 operations were performed, of which 63% were for cataract and 21% …

Pityriasis rosea presents in the Sudan with the same picture as it does in other countries of Africa. The seasonal incidence is highest in the cold, dry months. The erythematous or rosea picture seen in whites is never encountered in blacks. The term pityriasis rosea may not be descriptive of the disease as it presents in black and brown skins.

The pathology of schistosomiasis in an autopsy material consisting of medico-legal cases and unclaimed bodies in the Sudan is described. The limitations of this type of study are pointed out. S. mansoni-infection and S. haematobium-infection occurred with a frequency of 14.3 per cent and 4.5 per cent of autopsies respectively. There was a geographical difference in the severity of S. mansoni-infection in two endemic areas in the country; it was particularly severe in patients coming from Bor area in the Southern Sudan. In autopsies with S. mansomi-infection intestinal polyposis and cor pulmona…

INTRODUCTION: The use of peritoneoscopy is an established method for diagnosis of intra abdominal diseases. In industrialized countries such as USA and Germany its use has declined with the advent of modern imaging techniques. However it is believed that there is an important rationale for its use in developing countries.
STUDY AIMS: A retrospective study to assess the value of peritoneoscopy in a developing country (Sudan).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 274 patients were included in this study. Peritoneoscopy was performed in the endoscopy theatre, using standard techniques. Biopsy speci…

Wilson disease is rarely reported among African children. Wilson disease is due to a mutation in ATP7B on an autosomal recessive pattern, which causes defective copper excretion and copper accumulation in tissues such as liver and brain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of Wilson disease from Sudan, and it highlights the challenges of diagnosis and management in low-resource settings. Our report strengthens the need for awareness and accountability of rare diseases in public health systems, especially when access to diagnostics and special therapies is limited. A …

Sudan is surrounded by eight countries and has marked movement of population across its borders. At one time yaws and syphilis were important public health problems in the Sudan. Following the wide use of penicillin, both diseases were much reduced in prevalence and were no longer public health problems. However, the extensive population movement and particularly the huge influx of refugees across the border pose important potential hazards. The rapid urbanization and the social and cultural changes that followed economic development affected family ties and community behavior and resulted in …
