The metabolism of methionine and cysteine in the body tissues determines the concentrations of several metabolites with various biologic activities, including homocysteine, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), taurine, and glutathione. Hyperhomocysteinemia, which is correlated with lower HDL cholesterol in blood in volunteers and animal models, has been associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. In humans, the relation between methionine intake and hyperhomocysteinemia is dependent on vitamin status (vitamins B-6 and B-12 and folic acid) and on the supply of other amino acids. However,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The importance of sulfur amino acid metabolism has become increasingly apparent in recent years. Methionine and cysteine are precursors of glutathione, which plays an important role in intracellular antioxidant/free radical defenses. Homocysteine is a non-protein-bound sulfur amino acid strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Both glutathione and homocysteine are affected by abnormalities in sulfur amino acid metabolism that occur in the clinical setting.
RECENT FINDINGS: The Storch-Young model, which determines methionine turnover and homocysteine reme

Sulfur amino acid metabolism was studied in patients with mild to severe forms of liver dysfunction and compared with that of healthy controls. Patients with mild liver dysfunction (for example, Gilbert's syndrome) had a normal sulfur amino acid metabolism. With increased inflammatory activity and cirrhosis (for example, chronic active hepatitis, alcohol-induced cirrhosis, and hepatic coma) a decreased ability to metabolize methionine (to cysteine, with cystathionine accumulation) and cysteine (to inorganic sulfate, with thiosulfate and N-acetylcysteine accumulation) was found. In contrast, tr

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a decisive role in kidney health and disease. H2S can ben synthesized via enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways, as well as gut microbial origins. Kidney disease can originate in early life induced by various maternal insults throughout the process, namely renal programming. Sulfur-containing amino acids and sulfate are essential in normal pregnancy and fetal development. Dysregulated H2S signaling behind renal programming is linked to deficient nitric oxide, oxidative stress, the aberrant renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. In animal

The heterogeneous chemistry of sulfur dioxide with CaCO(3) (calcite) aerosol as a function of relative humidity (RH) has been studied under isolated particle conditions in an atmospheric reaction chamber using infrared absorption spectroscopy. The reaction of SO(2) with calcite produced gas phase CO(2) as a product in addition to the conversion of the particulate carbonate to sulfite. The reaction extent was found to increase with elevated RH, as has been observed for the similar reaction with HNO(3), but much higher relative humidities were needed to significantly enhance the reaction. Mixed

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a chronic and complex severe psychiatric disorder. Male and female are different in their risks for schizophrenia for the biologic and sociocultural reasons. Homocysteine (Hcy), Cysteine (Cys), and methionine (Met) play important roles in metabolism, and the three amino acids may also be involved in pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the associations between sulfur-containing amino acid blood levels and risk of schizophrenia, evaluating the different risk in male and female.
METHODS: We organized a case-control study on 876 individ

Homocysteine (Hcy) is methylated by methionine synthase to form methionine with methyl-cobalamin as a cofactor. The reaction demethylates 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate, which is required for DNA and RNA synthesis. Deficiency of either of the cobalamin (Cbl) and/or folate cofactors results in elevated Hcy and megaloblastic anemia. Elevated Hcy is a sensitive biomarker of Cbl and/or folate status and more specific than serum vitamin assays. Elevated Hcy normalizes when the correct vitamin is given. Elevated Hcy is associated with alcohol use disorder and drugs that target folate o

A man found dead with circumstantial evidence indicating exposure to sulfuric acid vapor. He had been applying a solution of concentrated sulfuric acid to a drain pipe in an attempt to clear a blockage. External examination showed moderate corrosive damage around his mouth and nose, on his forearms and tips of fingers of his left hand. Autopsy revealed congestion of the respiratory passages, as well as severe pulmonary edema. Traces of acid and sulfate compounds were chemically detected in his upper respiratory passages. Death was attributed to accidental inhalation of fumes of strong sulfuric

BACKGROUND: Plasma sulfur amino acids (SAAs), i.e., methionine, total cysteine (tCys), total homocysteine (tHcy), cystathionine, total glutathione (tGSH), and taurine, are potential risk factors for obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. However, except for plasma tHcy, little is known about how dietary intake modifies plasma SAA concentrations.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the intake of SAAs and proteins or diet quality is associated with plasma SAAs.
METHODS: Data from a cross-sectional subset of The Maastricht Study (n = 1145, 50.5% men, 61 interquartile range: [55, 66] y, 22.5% with

The chemical evolution of amino acids, especially sulfur-containing ones, requires appropriate conditions and natural sources to provide starting prebiotic compounds. In the present study hydrothermal vents, volcanoes and oceans were chosen as a plausible environment, where prebiotic reactions take place. The suggested reaction network starts only with three compounds - water, hydrogen cyanide/formamide and hydrogen sulfide. The present study suggests one-pot hydrothermal experiment in laboratory conditions to demonstrate some vital prebiotic precursors formation. The reaction pathways from st

Wood chips of Norway spruce were pretreated by steam explosion at 195-215 °C after impregnation with either sulfuric acid (SA) or sulfur dioxide (SD). The effects of different pretreatment conditions on formation of microbial inhibitors were investigated, and the inhibitory effects on yeast of pretreatment liquids and of specific inhibitors that were found in the pretreatment liquids were elucidated. Whereas the concentrations of most inhibitors increased with increasing pretreatment temperatures, there were exceptions, such as formaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The highest concentration

This work addresses the discrepancy in the literature regarding the effects of sulfuric acid (H(2)SO(4)) on elemental Hg uptake by activated carbon (AC). H(2)SO(4) in AC substantially increased Hg uptake by absorption particularly in the presence of oxygen. Hg uptake increased with acid amount and temperature exceeding 500 mg-Hg/g-AC after 3 days at 200 °C with AC treated with 20% H(2)SO(4). In the absence of other strong oxidizers, oxygen was able to oxidize Hg. Upon oxidation, Hg was more readily soluble in the acid, greatly enhancing its uptake by acid-treated AC. Without O(2), S(VI) in H(2

Halitosis is most often caused by oral conditions. Volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), constituting the major components of oral malodor, are produced by anaerobic, gram-negative bacteria retained mainly in periodontal pockets or on the tongue dorsum. Sulfur-containing amino acids serve as substrate for these bacteria. VSC have also been found to have unfavorable effect on the tissue. The aim of this study was to examine whether normal, healthy individuals with no history of halitosis were able to produce VSC from cysteine, when applied as a mouthrinse. A further aim of the study was to investiga

sulfur-containing amino acids have been reported to patriciate in gene regulation, DNA methylation, protein synthesis and other physiological or pathological processes. In recent years, metabolism-related molecules of sulfur-containing amino acids affecting the occurrence, development and treatment of tumors have been implicated in various disorders, especially in leukemia. Here, we summarize current knowledge on the sulfur-containing amino acid metabolism pathway in leukemia and examine ongoing efforts to target this pathway, including treatment strategies targeting (a) sulfur-containing amin

Atrial fibrosis, a symbol of atrial structural remodelling, is a complex process involved in the occurrence and maintenance of atrial fibrillation (AF). Atrial fibrosis is regulated by multiple factors. Sulfur containing amino acids and their metabolites, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and taurine, can inhibit the process of atrial fibrosis and alleviate atrial remodeling. However, homocysteine can promote the activation of atrial fibroblasts and further promote atrial fibrosis. In this review, we will focus on the recent progress in atrial structural changes and molecular mechanisms of atrial

Sulfur trioxide (SO3) and the hydroxysulfonyl radical (HOSO2) are two key intermediates in the production of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) on Earth's atmosphere, one of the major components of acid rain. Here, the photochemical properties of these species are determined by means of high-level quantum chemical methodologies, and the potential impact of their light-induced reactivity is assessed within the context of the conventional acid rain generation mechanism. Results reveal that the photodissociation of HOSO2 occurs primarily in the stratosphere through the ejection of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and
