Distribution within the barn owl's inferior colliculus of neurons projecting to the optic tectum and thalamus.

Behavioral studies in barn owls indicate that both the optic tectum (OT) and the auditory arcopallium (AAr) mediate sound localization through the presence of neurons that respond only when sound comes from a circumscribed direction in space. The early stages of the computations leading to these so-called space-specific neurons are shared in a common brainstem pathway, which then splits at the level of the inferior colliculus (IC) such that the last computational stage is thought to be duplicated. The study presented here addresses whether the space-specific neurons in OT and AAr are indeed pa

Neuron mapping in the Molly fish optic tectum: An emphasis on the adult neurogenesis process.

Teleost fish exhibit the most pronounced and widespread adult neurogenesis. Recently, functional development and the fate of newborn neurons have been reported in the optic tectum (OT) of fish. To determine the role of neurogenesis in the OT, this study used histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic investigations on 18 adult Molly fish specimens (Poecilia sphenops). The OT of the Molly fish was a bilateral lobed structure located in the dorsal part of the mesencephalon. It exhibited a laminated structure made up of alternating fiber and cellular layers, which were organized

Activity of the Substantia Nigra Pars Reticulata during Saccade Adaptation.

When movements become inaccurate, the resultant error induces motor adaptation to improve accuracy. This error-based motor learning is regarded as a cerebellar function. However, the influence of the other brain areas on adaptation is poorly understood. During saccade adaptation, a type of error-based motor learning, the superior colliculus (SC) sends a postsaccadic error signal to the cerebellum to drive adaptation. Since the SC is directly inhibited by the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), we hypothesized that the SNr might influence saccade adaptation by affecting the SC error signal.

Calcium binding protein expression in the optic tectum of Alligator during development.

The onset and distribution of the calcium binding proteins, calretinin, calbindin, and parvalbumin, were examined in the optic tectum of Alligator mississipiensis embryos between Stages 18 and 26-28. The immunoreactivity of each calcium binding protein correlated well with the results from the Western blot experiments. In terms of onset and distribution, calretinin expressison was the most widespread of the three calcium binding proteins that were examined, and was also the earliest to be visualized. Calbindin expression occurred next, whereas parvalbumin expression was the most limited and ap

Superior colliculus bidirectionally modulates choice activity in frontal cortex.

Action selection occurs through competition between potential choice options. Neural correlates of choice competition are observed across frontal cortex and downstream superior colliculus (SC) during decision-making, yet how these regions interact to mediate choice competition remains unresolved. Here we report that SC can bidirectionally modulate choice competition and drive choice activity in frontal cortex. In the mouse, topographically matched regions of frontal cortex and SC formed a descending motor pathway for directional licking and a re-entrant loop via the thalamus. During decision-m

Rapid processing of threatening faces in the amygdala of nonhuman primates: subcortical inputs and dual roles.

A subcortical pathway through the superior colliculus and pulvinar has been proposed to provide the amygdala with rapid but coarse visual information about emotional faces. However, evidence for short-latency, facial expression-discriminating responses from individual amygdala neurons is lacking; even if such a response exists, how it might contribute to stimulus detection is unclear. Also, no definitive anatomical evidence is available for the assumed pathway. Here we showed that ensemble responses of amygdala neurons in monkeys carried robust information about open-mouthed, presumably threat

Superior colliculus connections with visual thalamus in gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis): evidence for four subdivisions within the pulvinar complex.

As diurnal rodents with a well-developed visual system, squirrels provide a useful comparison of visual system organization with other highly visual mammals such as tree shrews and primates. Here, we describe the projection pattern of gray squirrel superior colliculus (SC) with the large and well-differentiated pulvinar complex. Our anatomical results support the conclusion that the pulvinar complex of squirrels consists of four distinct nuclei. The caudal (C) nucleus, distinct in cytochrome oxidase (CO), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and vesicular glutamate transporter-2 (VGluT2) preparations,

The projection from different visual cortical areas to the rat superior colliculus.

The rat occipital cortex contains a number of morphologically and physiologically distinct visual areas. Retrograde tracing studies have shown that most if not all of these areas project in a topographic fashion to the ipsilateral superior colliculus (SC). In the present study, small amounts of wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated HRP (WGA-HRP) were injected into adult rat occipital cortex to determine how afferents from the different visual cortical areas are distributed within the various layers of the SC. Cytoarchitectonic criteria were used to help establish the location of the WGA-HRP injecti

Sound-localization deficits induced by lesions in the barn owl's auditory space map.

Barn owls possess a two-dimensional map of auditory space. The map appears in its final form in the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICx) and is projected from there to the optic tectum (OT). To determine the role of the map in ICx or its projected version in OT in the localization of acoustic stimuli, head movements of three adult owls were recorded before and after lesioning parts of the map either in ICx or in OT. Small electrolytic lesions caused sound-localization deficits that were characterized by failures to turn, turns away from the sound source, increased response latenci

Work out where the problem is in the brainstem using 'the rule of 4'.

The brainstem is incredibly complex. It contains nuclei, pathways and structures, many with unusual names such as the olives, medial longitudinal fasciculus and the superior and inferior colliculi. The neurological examination can only assess some of them. This article is designed to help make sense of the signs in the more common brainstem syndromes using 'the rule of 4'.

Activity in the human superior colliculus associated with reaching for tactile targets.

The superior colliculus (SC) plays a major role in orienting movements of eyes and the head and in the allocation of attention. Functions of the SC have been mostly investigated in animal models, including non-human primates. Differences in the SC's anatomy and function between different species question extrapolations of these studies to humans without further validation. Few electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies in animal models and humans have reported a role of the SC in visually guided reaching movements. Using BOLD fMRI imaging, we sought to decipher if the SC is also active duri

Topography of visual and somatosensory inputs to the pontine nuclei in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

Birds have a comprehensive network of sensorimotor projections extending from the forebrain and midbrain to the cerebellum via the pontine nuclei, but the organization of these circuits in the pons is not thoroughly described. Inputs to the pontine nuclei include two retinorecipient areas, nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (LM) and nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR), which are important structures for analyzing optic flow. Other crucial regions for visuomotor control include the retinorecipient ventral lateral geniculate nucleus (GLv), and optic tectum (TeO). These visual areas, together wi

Dopamine control of downstream motor centers.

The role of dopamine in the control of movement is traditionally associated with ascending projections to the basal ganglia. However, more recently descending dopaminergic pathways projecting to downstream brainstem motor circuits were discovered. In lampreys, salamanders, and rodents, these include projections to the downstream Mesencephalic Locomotor Region (MLR), a brainstem region controlling locomotion. Such descending dopaminergic projections could prime brainstem networks controlling movement. Other descending dopaminergic projections have been shown to reach reticulospinal cells involv

The postnatal development of retinal projections in strepsirrhine galagos (Otolemur garnettii).

Here, we describe the postnatal development of retinal projections in galagos. Galagos are of special interest as they represent the understudied strepsirrhine branch (galagos, pottos, lorises, and lemurs) of the primate radiations. The projections of both eyes were revealed in each galago by injecting red or green cholera toxin subunit B (CTB) tracers into different eyes of galagos ranging from postnatal day 5 to adult. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, the magnocellular, parvocellular, and koniocellular layers were clearly labeled and identified by having inputs from the ipsilateral

Neurophysiology of the saccadic system: The reticular formation.

This chapter discusses the neurophysiology and function of subcortical circuits and cortical areas involved in saccade generation. While cells within the different nuclei of the brainstem reticular formation shape the temporal details of ipsiversive horizontal and vertical/cyclotorsional saccade components, the cerebellar flocculus, vermis and fastigial nucleus are thought to modulate these saccadic waveforms. Burst neurons in the deep layers of the superior colliculus encode the saccade vector in the contralateral field by a localized population in a motor-error map. The complexity of the sac

Space-Specific Deficits in Visual Orientation Discrimination Caused by Lesions in the Midbrain Stimulus Selection Network.

Perceptual decisions require both analysis of sensory information and selective routing of relevant information to decision networks. This study explores the contribution of a midbrain network to visual perception in chickens. Analysis of visual orientation information in birds takes place in the forebrain sensory area called the Wulst, as it does in the primary visual cortex (V1) of mammals. In contrast, the midbrain, which receives parallel retinal input, encodes orientation poorly, if at all. We discovered, however, that small electrolytic lesions in the midbrain severely impair a chicken's

Local differences in calretinin immunoreactivity in the optic tectum of the ocellated dragonet.

The optic tectum of the ocellated dragonet (Synchiropus ocellatus) was studied with immunohistochemistry. Antibodies raised against the calcium binding protein calretinin (CR) revealed a lamination similar to that already reported for other ray finned fish. Most immunoreactive fibers could be observed in those layers receiving retinal afferents and most immunoreactive cells occur in the stratum periventriculare. However, there are marked differences in the presence of other calretinin-positive cell types and immunoreactive lamina between the dorsomedial and ventrolateral parts of the tectum. S
