In Vitro Study of Caecal and Colon Microbial Fermentation Patterns in Wild Boar (Sus scrofa scrofa).

The aim of this study was to evaluate wild boar (Sus scrofa scrofa) caecal and colon products of microbial activity including short chain fatty acids (SCFA), ammonia and methane concentrations. The in vitro method was applied to caecal and colon contents after 12 and 24-hour incubation with the substrate (wheat bran), or without any additive (control samples). The pH was also measured in each sample. In samples incubated with the substrate, a lower pH was noted as compared to the control (P < 0.001). In terms of the total SCFA concentration, the hindgut microbial fermentation pattern of wild b

Prevalence of Leptospira spp. in Lithuanian Wild Boars (Sus scrofa).

Leptospira is a bacteria responsible for a widespread zoonosis that affects both humans and animals. Leptospirosis is a challenging pathology to diagnose and treat since its signs are unspecific and symptoms vary greatly. The disease seems to be highly prevalent in environments where reservoir animals such as rats and small mammals are common. Even though leptospirosis in humans in Lithuania is rare, it remains a disease of significance in Europe. Information on reservoir animals and prevalence of Leptospira in wild animals in Lithuania is lacking. The aim of this country-wide study was to eva

Cryptosporidium suis n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) in pigs (Sus scrofa).

Molecular and biological characteristics of a new species of Cryptosporidium from the feces of pigs (Sus scrofa) is described. Oocysts are structurally indistinguishable from those of Cryptosporidium parvum; they are passed fully sporulated, lack sporocysts, and measure 4.9-4.4 microm (mean = 4.6 microm) x 4.0-4.3 microm (mean = 4.2 microm); length to width ratio 1.1 (n = 50). Cryptosporidium suis is not transmissible to nude mice and is poorly infectious for cattle. Molecular and phylogenetic analyses at the 18S ribosomal RNA, heat shock protein 70, and actin gene loci demonstrate C. suis to

Heritability estimate of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in pigs (Sus scrofa domestica).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the heritability of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in pigs and the relation between HCM and heart measurements, pathologic features, and growth to provide references for HCM line development. A total of 353 on-farm tested gilts (females) and boars (males) from 74 sire families were randomly selected from a single breeding farm where HCM was prevalent. Hearts were collected after animals were slaughtered. Heart length, width, and weight, heart-to-body weight ratio, and thickness of the cranial, middle, and caudal portions of the ventricular septum, l

Ultrastructural Studies on the Pituitary Gland of Pig (Sus scrofa domestica).

Among domestic animals, pigs serve as valuable biomodels for studying endocrine disorders due to similarities in the structure and hormone production of their pituitary gland with humans. The pituitary gland is a central regulator of hormonal balance and plays a crucial role in various physiological functions. The present ultrastructural studies of the porcine pituitary gland not only enhance our understanding of porcine anatomy but also provide valuable comparative data for understanding the functioning of the human pituitary gland. The pituitary gland of the pig consisted of adenohypophysis

Epidemiological factors conditioning sarcoptic mange spreading in wild boar (Sus scrofa).

Sarcoptic mange is a widely distributed disease, with numerous potential hosts among domestic and wild animals. Nowadays it is considered a neglected re-emergent infection in humans. As a difference with domestic pigs, and even with several clinical cases reported in some European countries, it seems that Eurasian wild boars (Sus scrofa) have a low susceptibility to clinical mange. However, because of a case of confirmed transmission from Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica) to wild boar in the province of Tarragona, we planned a large-scale ELISA survey in the neighboring Valencian Community (SE Sp

High Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Slovenian Wild Boars (Sus scrofa).

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite of great public health concern. Wild boars could be considered an emerging source of toxoplasmosis in humans due to the popularity of venison and their increasing population. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in the Slovenian wild boar population and evaluate risk factors for human infection. Of 353 samples, 62% were positive for T. gondii using ELISA tests. This is the highest T. gondii seroprevalence reported to date in wild boar worldwide. The increase in prevalence with increasing age (p = 0.003) and weight (p =

Body Wall Defects: Gastroschisis and Omphalocoele in Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Body wall defects (BWDs) are not well studied and categorized in veterinary medicine. BWDs can be an isolated occurrence, but often occur with other major developmental abnormalities. Thirty-two body wall malformations of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) are presented and classified, distinguishing between body wall dysplasia (umbilical hernia, abdominal wall distension and gastroschisis), omphalocoele and thoracoabdominoschisis (Cantrell syndrome, shistosomus reflexus, body stalk anomalies).

Duodenal Cannulation in Pigs (Sus scrofa) as a Drug Delivery Method.

Currently available animal models for delivery of drug capsules and pharmacokinetic testing are limited by either intersubject variability in gastric emptying time or the need to sedate animals when using targeted delivery methods of drug capsules. With the increasing development of large-molecule biologics, better in vivo models for testing the pharmacokinetics of capsule-delivered drugs are urgently needed. To this end, we made engineering modifications to an existing bovine surgical cannula device, successfully implanted this modified cannula into pigs, and delivered drug capsules directly

Trichinella species circulating in wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations in Poland.

Hunting in Poland has a long tradition and became more popular after 1990. Each year over 60,000 wild boar are hunted. Some of them may act as Trichinella carriers thus all carcasses of wild boar are systematically sampled in game-handling establishments as part of the post-mortem examination. The aim of the study was to determine the species of Trichinella and to evaluate the year to year differences in the occurrence of those species in the populations of wild boar in Poland. Samples for the study were provided by the Veterinary Inspection Service. Wild boar carcasses were examined using a d

Cryptosporidium scrofarum n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa).

We describe the morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium pig genotype II and propose the species name Cryptosporidium scrofarum n. sp. to reflect its prevalence in adult pigs worldwide. Oocysts of C. scrofarum are morphologically indistinguishable from C. parvum, measuring 4.81-5.96 μm (mean=5.16)×4.23-5.29 μm (mean=4.83) with a length to width ratio of 1.07±0.06 (n=400). Oocysts of C. scrofarum obtained from a naturally infected pig were infectious for 8-week-old pigs but not 4-week-old pigs. The prepatent period in 8-week-old Cryptosporidium-naive pigs was

A SEROLOGIC SURVEY OF PATHOGENS IN WILD BOAR ( SUS SCROFA) IN SWEDEN.

The wild boar ( Sus scrofa) population has increased markedly during the last three decades in Sweden and in other parts of Europe. This population growth may lead to increased contact between the wild boar and the domestic pig ( Sus scrofa scrofa), increasing the risk of transmission of pathogens. The objective of our study was to estimate the seroprevalence of selective pathogens, known to be shared between wild boars and domestic pigs in Europe, in three wild boar populations in Sweden. In total, 286 hunter-harvested female wild boars were included in this study. The sera were analyzed for

The morphology of the inner ear from the domestic pig (Sus scrofa).

The morphology of the hair cells of the inner ear end organs from the domestic pig (Sus scrofa) have been studied using a combination of Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM and TEM), revealing hair cells from the cochlea and vestibule using a novel surgical and technical approach. This is the first time that the inner ear hair cells from S. scrofa have been studied, thus providing useful anatomical information on the morphology of the hair cells from the cochlea, saccule and utricle from a large mammal. Anatomical information in relation to the morphology of the inner ear is of

Occurrence and first molecular characterization of Sarcocystis spp. in wild boars (Sus scrofa) and domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) in Romania: Public health significance of the isolates.

Domestic and wild pigs, as intermediate hosts, can harbor tissue cysts of three Sarcocystis species namely S. miescheriana, S. suihominis and S. porcifelis. Out of them, S. suihominis is zoonotic. Romania is a country with high consumption of raw and/or undercooked traditional pork products. This fact may greatly favor the acquiring of the zoonotic Sarcocystis infections by humans, as definitive host. Based on this consideration and in order to investigate the occurrence and public health significance of Sarcocystis spp. in two western counties (Caraş-Severin and Timiş) of Romania, a total of

Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) as Reservoir of Pathogenic and Intermediate Leptospira.

Leptospirosis is a globally widespread zoonosis, with wildlife species playing a key role in the maintenance and environmental dissemination of Leptospira spp. Wild boar (Sus scrofa) are increasingly recognized as potential reservoir; however, molecular data on renal carriage of Leptospira spp. in Europe and particularly in Germany, remain scarce. In this study, 1281 wild boar kidney samples collected in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt were analyzed by real-time PCR to investigate the presence of pathogenic and intermediate Leptospira DNA. Pathogenic Leptospira DNA was detected in 3.1% (95%

Morphology of the epididymal duct of the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus).

The study provides a general overview of the morphology of the epididymal duct in pigs. Four epididymides from two sexually mature boars were dissected into 32 segments and examined histologically. Duct lumen and wall thickness were measured and relative surface area of different components was assessed by Chalkley's random hit method. The epithelial lining was characterized at X1000. Lumen diameter and wall thickness of efferent ductules averaged 177 and 30 µm, respectively. Of the epididymal duct from caput to distal corpus the luminal diameter was 332 µm, with a narrower section in the prox

Passage of spermatozoa through the epididymis of the boar (Sus scrofa domesticus).

Previous studies of epididymal transit in the pig have had insufficient animal numbers to provide a comprehensive picture of a continuous process. The present study attempts to addresses this issue. Radioactively labeled thymidine was infused into the testicular arteries of 48 sexually rested young adult boars of the Goettingen Miniature Pig breed. Hemicastrations were performed in random order in 2 animals daily on Days 21-24 following thymidine injection and in 4 animals daily on Days 25-41 and 43, 45, 47 and 49. Sperm obtained from 12 epididymal sites between the proximal caput and distal c

A Serosurvey for Brucellosis in Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) in Sardinia, Italy.

Porcine brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella suis and hosted by pigs (Sus scrofa). Both domestic pigs and wild boars are affected. We measured the prevalence of antibody to Brucella spp. in wild boars in Sardinia, Italy. During 1 November 2009 to 31 January 2010, we collected 570 serum samples from legally hunted wild boars and tested them using a commercial competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Sex and age class of the sampled wild boars were also recorded. Thirty-five samples were positive for an apparent antibody prevalence of 6.1%. Antibody prevalences did not diff

Vagal projections to the pylorus in the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica).

The goal of the present study was to examine the precise localization of the brainstem motor and primary sensory (nodose ganglion) vagal perikarya supplying the pylorus in the domestic pig. Using the Fast Blue retrograde tracing technique it has been established that all the vagal motor neurons projecting to the pylorus (about 337 ± 59 cells per animal) were localized bilaterally in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMX, 171 - left; 167 - right) and all other regions of the porcine brainstem were devoid of labeled neurons. The vagal perikarya supplying the porcine pylorus were dispe
