[Medical tattooing, an unknown treatment option].

Medical tattooing is mostly known as a treatment option after breast reconstructive surgery. Nowadays, medical tattooing has a broader indication and can be used for treating port wine stains, scars, burns and transplanted skin. We present three patients with different indications for medical tattooing: one patient with a facial port wine stain, one patient with a scar after a thoracotomy, and a patient with a skin transplantation. They were all satisfied with the result. We discuss alternative treatment options, the treatment technique, the aftercare, and the follow-up of medical tattooing. P…

Lichen planus pemphigoides after body tattooing.

Decorative tattooing is very popular worldwide and is associated with cutaneous complications, ranging from infections to localized or generalized skin reactions. We report a case of a patient presenting with generalized violaceous pruritic papular lesions 1 month after obtaining a black ink tattoo. Histological examination of a papular lesion distal to the tattoo site showed focal band-like lymphocytic infiltrate. He subsequently developed bullae over the papular lesions, with elevated serum BP180 antibody levels. A diagnosis of generalized lichen planus and lichen planus pemphigoides was mad…

A medical-toxicological view of tattooing.

Long perceived as a form of exotic self-expression in some social fringe groups, tattoos have left their maverick image behind and become mainstream, particularly for young people. Historically, tattoo-related health and safety regulations have focused on rules of hygiene and prevention of infections. Meanwhile, the increasing popularity of tattooing has led to the development of many new colours, allowing tattoos to be more spectacular than ever before. However, little is known about the toxicological risks of the ingredients used. For risk assessment, safe intradermal application of these pi…

[Cutaneous infections related to permanent tattooing].

Decorative tattooing is made by introducing exogenous pigments and/or dyes into the dermis to permanently mark the body for decorative or other reasons. Unfortunately, this procedure is not harmless and various complications may occur including the potential inoculation of virulent microorganisms in the dermis. Cutaneous infections usually develop within days to weeks after the procedure and may include: pyogenic infections (staphylococcus, streptococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, etc.), but also atypical bacteria (commensal mycobacteria, tuberculosis, leprosy, etc.), viral infections (molluscum…

Contact dermatitis after henna skin tattooing.

A case of contact dermatitis resulting from temporary tattooing with henna is described. The skin was stained using a dye described as 'black' henna. This is produced by the addition of paraphenylenediamine (PPD) to traditional henna dye in order to make temporary skin tattoos appear darker. Sensitisation to PPD may also cause sensitivity to printers' inks, clothing dyes, hair dyes, local anaesthetics, sulphonamides, and para-aminosalicylic acid. The case of contact dermatitis described responded to application of topical steroid with no sequelae; however patients may be left with hypo- or hyp…

Intraoral cultural tattooing: Possible forensic utility.

The custom of oral tattooing is mainly performed in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and usually results in blue pigmentation of the maxillary gingiva in dentate individuals. However, its usefulness has not been explored in the forensic literature. The aim of this article is to provide a review of this custom and include an unusual case study involving persistent gingival pigmentation. Herein, this report describes a 43-year-old woman from Eritrea who presented with slight bluish hue of the edentulous maxillary ridge associated with cultural tattooing. Elucidation of the cause of subtle blue hyperpigment…

[Pseudolymphatic allergic immune reaction after tattooing].

Allergic reactions occurring after tattooing, especially after the use of red tattoo ink ingredients are relatively rare. We report a painful skin reaction occurring 6 months after the tattoing of the right lower extremity in a 30-year-old female patient. Pathohistological and immunchemical results confirmed a pseudolymphoma. Only the tangential excision of the affected areas led to a sufficient healing process. Split thickness skin grafts were used for defect coverage. 2 years later, the patient was still pain free and the wounds had healed completely without any irritation.

Special Applications of Medical Tattooing: Contouring and 3D Exemplified by Tattooing of the Nailbed and the Gingiva.

Medical tattooing aims to restore the normality of skin structures in patients who have skin diseases or suffer sequelae after surgical interventions or hazards. There are numerous applications, with tattooing of vitiligo and the nipple areola complex after breast cancer surgery as leading fields. The use of 3D or realistic tattoo techniques has increased the potential of medical tattooing and improved the aesthetic results. The tattooist must have good technical training combined with artistic and creative talents. In this chapter, two innovative applications of medical tattooing will be pres…

Microblading Technique for Tattooing of "Hairstrokes" That Simulate Natural Hair: Eyebrow Tattooing and Correction of Medical Conditions.

Microblading is a rapidly expanding technique in cosmetic and medical tattooing, used for eyebrow correction and conditions of hair loss. Tattooing is performed by hand using a special blade; tiny cuts in the outer skin are filled with dark pigment to simulate a natural hair. Indications, the technique, and the microblading procedure step-by-step are considered in what follows. Details on client selection and a range of pitfalls are discussed. The leading application of microblading is cosmetic tattooing of the eyebrows adding pigmented "hairstrokes" to the natural brow area. Tattooed "hairstr…

Response of mouse skin to tattooing: use of SKH-1 mice as a surrogate model for human tattooing.

Tattooing is a popular cosmetic practice involving more than 45 million US citizens. Since the toxicology of tattoo inks and pigments used to formulate tattoo inks has not been reported, we studied the immunological impact of tattooing and determined recovery time from this trauma. SKH-1 hairless mice were tattooed using commercial tattoo inks or suspensions of titanium dioxide, cadmium sulfide, or iron oxide, and sacrificed at 0.5, 1, 3, 4, 7, or 14 days post-tattooing. Histological evaluation revealed dermal hemorrhage at 0.5 and 1 day. Acute inflammation and epidermal necrosis were initiate…

Tattoo Sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a chronic, multisystem inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology. Skin involvement occurs in about 20-30% of cases. We describe a young man with fevers, night sweats and chest pain who was eventually diagnosed with cutaneous sarcoidosis.

[Uveitis and tattoos].

The complications of tattoos are multiple and known for many years. However, their success explains their exponential multiplication in all countries. This confirmed the development of two new complications: a localized or remote skin sarcoidosis reaction, as well as the development of clinical and histological uveitis. This is in the context of a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, or a granulomatous reaction. Their prevention remains rather poorly known. It requires that each tattoo-carrying subject perform a systemic sarcoidosis check-up as well as an ophthalmological investigation in search
