Cryptorchidism in LhrKO animals and the effect of testosterone-replacement therapy.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the current study was to characterize the morphological and genetic basis of cryptorchidism. METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated cryptorchidism in LH receptor (Lhr) knockout (LhrKO) mice and how testosterone-replacement therapy (TRT) worked to correct the phenotype. The results revealed that while gubernacular development was indistinguishable between Lhr-null and wild-type animals until 7 days of age, it was subsequently severely impaired in null animals. This was due to a reduction in mesenchymal cell division, differentiation into cremaster muscle cells and th

Antiepileptic drug therapy in companion animals: New perspectives on clinical pathology monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are widely used in companion animal medicine and are used long-term to treat a variety of epilepsy conditions. The use of these drugs can cause changes in routine tests. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the broad dimensions of hematological and biochemical changes induced by various AEDs in dogs and cats. Also, the distinction of these changes from actual pathologic alterations was considered. METHODS: In this review, relevant articles were searched and selected from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Then, data related to the type

[Research progress in phage therapy against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection in animals].

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a major causative agent of animal diarrhea, severely constraining the sustainable development of animal husbandry and endangering food safety and human health. Driven by the worsening antibiotic resistance crisis and the policy implementation of antibiotic reduction and replacement, phages have attracted extensive attention as novel antibacterial candidates. With prominent strengths including rapid bactericidal action, strict host specificity, no disturbance to intestinal microflora, and no drug residues, phages exhibit promising prospects for antibac

A Scoping Review of Antimicrobial Therapy in Leptospira Infections in Domestic Animals.

Leptospirosis, caused by Leptospira spp., affects multiple domestic species and can result in significant economic and public health impacts. This scoping review, conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searched PubMed, SciELO, and Scopus for original studies that described complete therapeutic protocols (including dose, duration, and confirmed diagnosis) in dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, and goats. Thirty-five studies met the criteria: 14 (40%) in cattle, 7 (20%) in swine, 2 (5.7%) in small ruminants, 7 (20%) in dogs and cats, and 5 (14.3%) in horses. In livestock, streptomy

Thermal Therapy Approaches for Treatment of Brain Tumors in Animals and Humans.

Primary brain tumors are often aggressive, with short survival from time of diagnosis even with standard of care therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Thermal therapies have been extensively investigated as both primary and adjuvant therapy. Although thermal therapies are not yet widely used clinically, there have been several promising approaches demonstrated in both animals and humans. This review presents thermal therapy approaches in animal and human studies, including both hyperthermia (temperatures ~42°C-45°C) and thermal ablation (temperatures > 50°C). Hyperthe

Animal-assisted therapy in a Canadian psychiatric prison.

PURPOSE: Prison-based animal programs are becoming increasingly common in North America. The majority focus on community and animal well-being, with less explicit therapeutic goals for human participants. The purpose of this paper is to measure the objectives of a canine animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program in a Canadian psychiatric prison and examine whether the program supports inmates' correctional plans. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A modified instrumental case study design was applied with three inmates over a 24-AAT-session program. Quantitative and qualitative AAT session data were co

Animal models for studying dengue pathogenesis and therapy.

Development of a suitable animal model for dengue virus disease is critical for understanding pathogenesis and for preclinical testing of antiviral drugs and vaccines. Many laboratory animal models of dengue virus infection have been investigated, but the challenges of recapitulating the complete disease still remain. In this review, we provide a comprehensive coverage of existing models, from man to mouse, with a specific focus on recent advances in mouse models for addressing the mechanistic aspects of severe dengue in humans. This article forms part of a symposium in Antiviral Research on f

Animal models for anti-angiogenic therapy in endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a gynecological disease characterized by the growth of endometrium outside of the uterine cavity. It is often associated with dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, pelvic pain and infertility. One of the key requirements for endometriotic lesions to survive is development of a blood supply to support their growth. Indeed, dense vascularization is characteristic feature of endometriotic lesions. This has led to the idea that suppression of blood vessel growth (anti-angiogenic therapy) may be a successful therapeutic approach for endometriosis. Potential effectiveness of anti-angiogenic th

Animal models for the study of influenza pathogenesis and therapy.

Influenza A viruses causes a variety of illnesses in humans. The most common infection, seasonal influenza, is usually a mild, self-limited febrile syndrome, but it can be more severe in infants, the elderly, and immunodeficient persons, in whom it can progress to severe viral pneumonitis or be complicated by bacterial superinfection, leading to pneumonia and sepsis. Seasonal influenza also occasionally results in neurologic complications. Rarely, viruses that have spread from wild birds to domestic poultry can infect humans; such "avian influenza" can range in severity from mild conjunctiviti

An alternating focused ultrasound system for thermal therapy studies in small animals.

PURPOSE: To develop an alternating focused ultrasound system (AFUS) for preclinical studies of thermal and acoustic responses of tumors in small animal models. This work was motivated by the need of noninvasively creating relatively small spheroidal thermal lesions in small targets (e.g., a murine tumor) without damaging the surrounding tissues. METHODS: The AFUS consists of two lead zirconate titanate (PZT-4) spherically curved ultrasound transducers with focal zones crossing each other at a 90 degrees angle. The transducers were independently powered following a programed alternating firing

Gene therapy and animal models for retinal disease.

Those plagued by retinal diseases are often robbed of their vision, as often, effective treatments do not exist. Knowledge of the pathophysiology of retinal diseases stems from research on available animal models. Gene therapy may be useful for both genetic and acquired retinal diseases. This review will focus on retinal diseases for which gene therapy has demonstrated promise. The diseases are presented in order of the age at which they are generally first symptomatic and include retinopathy of prematurity, Leber congenital amaurosis, mucopolysaccharidoses, retinoblastoma, retinitis pigmentos

Neurotrophin therapy and cochlear implantation: translating animal models to human therapy.

Cochlear implantation is a highly successful intervention for the treatment of deafness that depends on electrical stimulation of the inner ear's surviving spiral ganglion neurons. It is thought that some of the variability in hearing outcomes that is seen in patients receiving implants may be a reflection of the number or health of surviving neurons. A variety of studies have demonstrated a relationship between hair cell loss and degeneration of the spiral ganglion. This has been attributed to the loss of neurotrophin production with destruction of the spiral ganglion's target, the hair cell.

Case report: A community case study of the human-animal bond in animal-assisted therapy: the experiences of psychiatric prisoners with therapy dogs.

Prisoners frequently experience chronic loneliness and lack social support, which can exacerbate their struggles with incarceration. According to attachment theory, individuals who are insecurely attached may be more likely to develop unstable relationships and engage in antisocial behavior as adults. In 2015 an animal-assisted therapy (AAT) program was implemented in a Canadian forensic psychiatric facility/prison, a "hybrid" facility that adheres to federal legislation regarding correctional services but follows provincial mental health legislation. The program centers on the development of

Penicillin therapy for treatment of experimental endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci in animals.

We studied the efficacy of penicillin and penicillin combined with streptomycin in the treatment of experimental endocarditis caused by viridans streptococci that are susceptible, tolerant, or relatively resistant to penicillin. Rabbits with experimental endocarditis were treated with procaine penicillin (1.5 X 10(5) U/kg) administered twice daily or with procaine penicillin (1.5 X 10(5) U/kg) plus streptomycin (20 mg/kg) administered twice daily for five days. Compared with control animals, animals treated with penicillin alone experienced a significant reduction (P less than .001) of colony
