Furosemide-induced thiamine deficiency.

Male Wistar rats were separated into 4 groups: group 1, thiamine sufficient diet (control); group 2, thiamine sufficient diet with intraperi … thiamine excretion. Thus, it is assumed that long-term administration of furosemide could induce a thiamine deficiency.

Thiamine deficiency and oxalosis.

Type I hyperoxaluria results from reduced activity of alpha-ketoglutarate: glyoxylate carboligase, which is necessary for the synergistic decarboxylation of glyoxylate and alpha-ketoglutarate to alpha-hydroxy-beta-keto-adipate. Since thiamine pyrophosphate is a cofactor in the reaction, thiamine deficiency might be expected to result in tissue oxalosis. However, there was no significant increase in the incidence of renal oxalosis in 15 patients with Wernicke's encephalopathy at necropsy compared with controls. It is possible that hyperoxaluria was present in these thiamine-deficient patients b…

Thiamine Deficiency in a Patient With Schizophrenia: Precautions and Countermeasures for Subclinical Thiamine Deficiency.

Patients with schizophrenia often experience problems associated with ordinary exercises of life due to their mental symptoms. Those experiencing problems related to feeding behavior, in particular, are considered to be susceptible to developing Wernicke encephalopathy due to a deficiency in thiamine, the physiological stores of which are limited; however, there are few reported cases, and most of them were accompanied by the classical triad of signs. We report our experience with asymptomatic thiamine deficiency (TD) in a schizophrenia patient. A 73-year-old female was receiving medication fo…

Thiamine deficiency and cardiovascular disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, functions as a cofactor in the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids. Thiamine deficiency has been suggested to be associated with many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and risk factors including type 1 and type 2 diabetes (T1D and T2D, respectively), obesity, chronic vascular inflammation, dyslipidemia, heart failure (HF), myocardial infarction (MI) and conduction defects, and depression. The aim of this review was to explore the evidence of thiamine deficiency among subjects with CVDs or risk factors, illustrate the theories explain…

Neuropathology of thiamine deficiency disorders.

The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) is the most frequently encountered manifestation of thiamine deficiency in Western society. It is commonly seen in alcoholic patients, but may also occur in patients with impaired nutrition from other causes, such as those with gastrointestinal disease or AIDS. The pathology is restricted to the central nervous system and is characterised by neuronal loss, gliosis and vascular damage in regions surrounding the third and fourth ventricles and the cerebral aqueduct. In addition to WKS, thiamine deficiency may also result in beriberi, a cardiac and peripheral…
