Two organic-inorganic cadmium thiocyanates, namely, Cd(SCN)(l-C5H8NO2) (1) and Cd(SCN)2(l-C5H9NO2) (2), have been synthesized using l-proline as the bridging ligand. The two compounds have double-chain-like and layered structures, respectively. They feature moderate second-harmonic-generation responses (0.33 × KH2PO4 for 1 and 1.58 × KH2PO4 for 2), wide band gaps (4.68 eV for 1 and 4.59 eV for 2), and large birefringences (0.210 at 546 nm for 1 and 0.295 at 546 nm for 2). The structure-property relationship was explicated by first-principle calculations based on density functional theory.

A colourimetric method is described for the determination of thiocyanate using a modification of the König reaction. The reagents used are stable, relatively non-toxic, and produce a colour with lambda max 543 nm which is stable for at least 90 minutes after formation. Although the method requires only 0.1--0.5 mL of plasma, 0.25 mg/L of thiocyanate may be determined using this procedure. Colorless crystals of Cd(SCN)(l-C3H6NO2) (1) and Cd(SCN)(l-C5H9N2O3)·H2O (2) were grown under mild reaction environments. The two inorganic-organic hybrid compounds adopt one-dimensional structural motifs, wherein cadmium thiocyanate chains are interconnected by l-alanine and l-glutamine ligands, respectively. Both compounds feature wide optical bandgaps and sufficient birefringent values. Notably, compound 1 displays a second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity of 0.5 × KH2PO4, whereas compound 2 exhibits a remarkably enhanced SHG response of 2.0 × KH2PO4.

Thiocyanate is an inorganic compound used in industrial applications. Here, we report a case of suicidal death due to acute thiocyanate overdose. A 44-year-old man who consumed an unknown amount of thiocyanate solution was transferred to the emergency room and died 2 h after admission. An autopsy was performed 2 days after death. Thiocyanate (SCN) concentrations were determined in serum samples from 130 young healthy persons (60 smokers) and related to their smoking and physiologic characteristics.
