PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) does not act on latent HIV reservoirs, and no latency-reversing agent (LRA) to date consistently reduces viral reservoirs in humans. In Sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere, complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are traditionally used to manage HIV/AIDS, including a subset with LRA properties.
RECENT FINDINGS: Several plants from the Euphorbiaceae and Thymelaeaceae families have been recently documented for traditional HIV/AIDS management and contain LRAs that function through protein kinase C activation. These CAM are increasin…

BACKGROUND: Agarwood, a precious resinous material derived from Aquilaria trees, is highly valued for its unique fragrance that mainly originates from sesquiterpenes and 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones. However, the dynamic release behavior of these compounds during combustion remains poorly understood. Common analytical methods, such as headspace and solid-phase microextraction, are limited by their temperature range and fail to mimic true combustion conditions. An innovative pre-treatment technique, gas liquid microextraction (GLME), was employed, requiring as little as 10 mg of sample to effecti

Agarwood is a resin produced by wounded Aquilaria plants. Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Gilg is the original plant source of agarwood in China. Formic acid combined with Botryosphaeria rhodina A13 (FAA13) induces the formation of artificial agarwood as an effective integrated induction method. However, its formation mechanism is still unclear, and the harvesting time of agarwood has not been elucidated. In this work, we analyzed FAA13-induced artificial agarwood and leaves at different time points within one year based on endophytic fungal community, expression of related genes, and secondary me

Agarwood, a highly valuable resin/wood combination with diverse pharmacological activities but scarce supply, has a long history of being used as a medicine in several medical systems. Grafted Kynam agarwood (GKA) has been cultivated successfully recently and has the qualities meeting the definition of premium Kynam agarwood. However, there are few comprehensive comparisons between GKA and normal agarwood in terms of traits, global composition, and activity, and some key issues for GKA to be adopted into the traditional Chinese medical (TCM) system have not been elaborated. The two types of ag

Agarwood essential oil is highly valued for its elegant scent profile; however, its fresh state is often accompanied by off-odors, limiting its direct application. Traditional aging requires months to mitigate off-odors, making it unsuitable for large-scale production. To address this challenge, this study employed thermal treatment as an innovative method to rapidly age the oil as an alternative. The results show that thermal treatment eliminates off-odors with comparable efficacy to six months of traditional aging, while enhancing the overall odor with stronger sweet and woody notes to achie

Agarwood is a type of resinous wood found in the trunks of Aquilaria and some other genera. It is widely used as an herbal medicine for sedation, detoxification, and treatment of stomachaches, as well as for incense sticks. However, the number of source plants is decreasing, and in 2005, they were added to Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). To identify source species of agarwood, we previously developed a DNA-barcoding method using resin deposition sites. In this study, to identify additional agarwood source species, the
