Myoinositol (Myo) is an isoform of inositol, a cyclic polyol with 6 hydroxyl groups. Myo is mainly derived from dietary intake while its endogenous production is generated from glucose by enzymatic reactions. Moreover, Myo is also synthesized de novo by catabolism of phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphoinositides (PIP), and inositol phosphates (IP). Myo has a determinant role in thyroid function and autoimmune diseases as it regulates iodine organification and thyroid hormone biosynthesis by the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in thyrocytes. Depletion of Myo that is involved in the thyroid

Autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as chronic lymphocytic or Hashimoto's thyroiditis, is characterized by infiltration of the thyroid gland by inflammatory cells and production of autoantibodies to thyroid-specific antigens thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase. It is accompanied by hypothyroidism due to destruction and eventual fibrous replacement of the follicle cells. Autoimmune thyroiditis is clearly multifactorial in etiology with genetic and environmental factors contributions. Excess dietary Iodine can exacerbate thyroiditis in genetically susceptible hosts such as the NOD.H2(h4) mouse. In

Human autoimmune thyroid diseases include both autoimmune hypothyroidism (thyroiditis) and autoimmune hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease). Either of the two feature profuse thyroidal infiltrates of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells and a biased intrathyroidal T-cell-receptor repertoire. Despite strong epidemiologic evidence in favor of a genetic component in the etiology of autoimmune thyroiditis, few hereditary risk factors have been consistently identified, which include a well-characterized series of HLA genes. These may account for the progression from a harmless autoimmune response characterized solely

Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is generally associated with hypothyroidism. It affects ~2% of the female population and 0.2% of the male population. The evidence of thyroid function- and thyroid autoantibody-unrelated microproteinuria in almost half of patients with AIT and sometimes heavy proteinuria as in the nephrotic syndrome point to a link of AIT with renal disease. The most common renal diseases observed in AIT are membranous nephropathy, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, minimal change disease, IgA nephropathy, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoan

A case of autoimmune thyroiditis after long term treatment with lithium is described in a 29 year old Japanese woman with manic depression. … ential diagnosis in patients presenting with these histological features includes painless (silent) thyroiditis, autoimmune thyroiditis and lithium associated autoimmune thyroiditis. A detailed clinical history is essential if the correct diagnosis is to be reached.

The aim of this chapter was to present a theory or concept of autoimmune disease that, in a sense, deemphasized the importance of immunoregulatory defects but rather concentrated on defects and/or changes in a target organ that might stimulate immune responses. Defects in immune regulation were not discussed because there is little evidence that generalized defects in immunoregulation occur in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (38). There is some evidence of decreased numbers of thyroid-antigen-specific T-suppressor cells in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease; however, this has be
