Methods to Prevent Tick Bites and Lyme Disease.

Current approaches for prevention of tick bites, Lyme disease, and other tick-borne diseases are described. Particular attention is paid to 4 risk-reduction strategies: (i) avoiding risk areas; (ii) personal protective measures that reduce the risk of tick bites or transmission of the agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi; (iii) reducing the number of infected ticks in the environment; and (iv) use of prophylactic antibiotic treatments following a bite to prevent clinical Lyme disease.

[An overlooked disease of tick bites: Lyme disease].

The exact prevalence of Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi is unknown in Turkey. However, B. burgdorferi seropositivity ranges between 6-44% among high risk groups. B. burgdorferi is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks belonging to the genus Ixodes, which may be seen throughout our country. Since the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is attracting attentions to tick bites more than ever in Turkey, the patients with tick bites are followed up more cautiously and have been referred to central hospitals. In this study 4 patients who were referred to our center with p…

[Prevention of Lyme borreliosis infection after tick bites].

Lyme borreliosis is one of the zoonotic and vectorial diseases in the world. Female of Taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus play an important role being the main vector of the agents, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, of the disease in the Far East including Japan. The number of patients who contacted Lyme borreliosis have been estimated to be around 100 cases in all of Japan. We also detected the spirochetes from the skin tissues of 27 cases involving erythema and 3 cases without erythema after tick bites in Hokkaido. We noticed that in those cases when the victims removed ticks by themselves using …

Two Atypical Cases of Tick Bites: A Fully Engorged Tick and Multiple Ticks.

Ticks have a cosmopolitan distribution and, as such, are also found in Japan. Ticks are typically ectoparasites of wild animals, however, humans can also be bitten when visiting environments inhabited by ticks. Herein, we describe two cases with atypical tick bites. Case 1 was an elderly Japanese male patient who presented with a fully engorged tick measuring 20 × 17 × 8 mm; it is rare for ticks to attain a length of 20 mm. Case 2 was an elderly Japanese female with severe dementia who presented with multiple tick bites, which is rare, after going missing for 6 days before being found in a den…

Evaluation of factors influencing tick bites and tick-borne infections: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Various tick-borne infections like borreliosis and rickettsiosis pose a health risk to humans in many parts of the world. We investigated seroprevalence of and seroconversion to Borrelia burgdorferi and Rickettsia spp. and relation to tick-bites, weather and clinical manifestations in Denmark. METHODS: Blood donors were enrolled at the Hospital of Southern Jutland in June-July with follow-up November-February of 2018 and 2019. Blood samples were collected, and a questionnaire regarding tick bites, potential exposures and symptoms was completed at each visit. Samples were tested fo…

Are Orienteers Protected Enough against Tick Bites? Estimating Human Exposure to Tick Bites through a Participative Science Survey during an Orienteering Competition.

Mass-participation events in temperate forests are now well-established features of outdoor activities and represent high-risk activities regarding human exposition to tick bites. In this study we used a citizen science approach to quantify the space-time frequency of tick bites and undetected tick bites among orienteers that participated in a 6-day orienteering competition that took place in July 2018 in the forests of Eastern France, and we looked at the use and efficacy of different preventive behaviors. Our study confirms that orienteers are a high-risk population for tick bites, with 62.4…

Tick bite-Erythema migrans.

This manuscript describes the typical presentation of erythema migrans caused by tick bite. The purposes of this article are (i) to encourage physicians to observe patients with tick bite carefully since it may cause fatal encephalitis, and (ii) to facilitate physicians, especially in endemic areas, to consider tick-borne encephalitis virus as one of the causes of encephalitis.

Management of tick bites and lyme disease during pregnancy.

Lyme disease results from the bite of a black-legged tick, populations of which have now become established in parts of Nova Scotia, southea … scolouration and possible impact on bone formation in the fetus. An algorithm for the management of tick bites in pregnancy is presented. Clinical, serological, and epidemiological studies have all failed to demonstrate a causal association between infection with B. burgdorferi and any adverse pregnancy outcomes regardless of whether maternal exposure occurs …

Hip arthoplasty in a forester after numerous tick bites.

Arthritis is one of the most important symptoms of late-stage borreliosis, observed in approximately 60% of untreated patients with Lyme disease. In several percent of them, this manifestation is of interest to orthopedic surgeons. The authors present a case of a patient, working as a forester, who underwent left hip replacement arthroplasty having contracted a Borrelia burgdorferi infection in the past, and who was hospitalized 12 years before in the infectious ward due to suspected neuroborreliosis for which he was treated with Ceftriaxone 2 × 2.0 g intravenously for 4 weeks. At that time, a

What's eating you? clinical manifestations of Dermacentor tick bites.

Dermacentor ticks are hard ticks found throughout most of North America and are easily identified by their large size, ornate scutum, and prominent dorsal pits. They are important disease vectors and are implicated in transmission of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), Colorado tick fever, tularemia, and erlichiosis. They also are an important cause of fatal tick paralysis.

Risk of acquiring tick bites in south-eastern Sweden.

The incidence and the temporal pattern of tick bites were studied in a population frequently out-of-doors in a tick-endemic area in south-eastern Sweden between May 2000 and March 2001. The participants, who were well aware of tick-borne diseases, inspected their skin daily from May until September and completed a diary sheet, registering visited geographical places, time out-of-doors, observed tick bites, etc. The participants were also given questionnaires in both the initial and final stages of the study, asking questions about their earlier history of tick bites, previous tick-borne diseas…

[Does the suction biting of uninfected ixodid ticks protect against tick-born encephalitis in subsequent bites?].

It has been experimentally established that suction of noninfected preimago and imago of Ixodoidea to sensitive animals (e.g. white mice) does not lead to the elaboration of immunity protection from bites of insects infected with tick-borne encephalitis virus. A protecting effect may be manifested in decreased likelihood (incidence) of repeated suction to animals formerly bitten by ticks.

[Risk of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infection among people occupationally exposed to tick bites].

The paper presents the results of seroepidemiologic studies concerning tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in 1583 persons (1261 forestry workers and 233 farmers) from the Lublin region (eastern Poland) occupationally exposed to ticks and in 130 healthy blond donors (a control group). The mean percentage of seropositive reactions in forestry workers amounted 19.8% and in farmers 32.0%. Based on 5-year research (1994-1998) conducted in 5 districts of the Lublin region, an existence of endemic foci of TBE was detected in the district of Biała Podlaska, on the areas of Radzyñ Podlaski and Parczew, wher
