MRI of the 'Tiger': a case series.

BACKGROUND: Sawtooth cardiomyopathy (CMP) or 'Tiger heart' is a rare form of CMP of which only several cases have been described in literature. Hereby, we present two cases with this phenotype using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). CASE SUMMARY: The first case was asymptomatic and referred for family screening. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance showed non-dilated, non-hypertrophic left and right ventricles with good systolic function. Morphologic abnormalities were seen with multiple band-shaped muscular bridges from the septal to the inferior wall fitting 'sawtooth CMP'. The second c

Prevalence of four viruses in captive Siberian tigers from Northeastern China.

Our study investigated the prevalence of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) in captive Siberian tigers in Northeastern China. A total of 324 blood samples and 33 nasopharyngeal swab samples of Siberian tigers collected from 2019 to 2021 in three cities were investigated by nested PCR. The results showed that 28.1% (91/324) tigers were infected with at least one virus; the positive rates of FHV-1, FCV, and FIV were 17.3%, 13.6%, and 0.9%, respectively; and the coinfection prevalence was 13.2%. No FeLV-pos…

HYPERGAMMAGLOBULINEMIA AND MYELOMA IN FIVE TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS): CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS.

Five adult tigers (Panthera tigris) presented with a range of clinical signs, including paresis (2/5), lameness (2/5), ataxia (3/5), anorexia (5/5), and lethargy (5/5). Each tiger demonstrated elevated plasma globulin levels (7.8-14.8 g/dl; [reference interval 2-5.1 g/dl]) on routine biochemistry, confirmed as a monoclonal gammopathy using protein electrophoresis. Serum gammaglobulin concentration ranged from 5 to 7.5 g/dl, or 45.1-63.4% of total protein concentration. Azotemia was present in three tigers. Diagnostics and management varied with the presenting signs but included magnetic resona…

Comparative Histopathological and Morphometric Analysis of Lung Tissues in Stillborn Cubs of South China Tiger and Amur Tiger.

This study aimed to determine whether the fetuses experienced hypoxic distress or intra-partum death due to compromised oxygen supply by quantitatively analyzing the lung structures of deceased captive South China Tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis, SCT) cubs. Furthermore, it investigated the etiology and mechanisms of asphyxia in the deceased cubs and explored potential factors contributing to the high mortality rate of SCT cubs. The research focused on three deceased SCT cubs, using three deceased neonatal Amur Tigers (P. t. altaica, AT) with no inbreeding background as controls. Histological …

Phenotypic plasticity determines differences between the skulls of tigers from mainland Asia.

Tiger subspecific taxonomy is controversial because of morphological and genetic variation found between now fragmented populations, yet the extent to which phenotypic plasticity or genetic variation affects phenotypes of putative tiger subspecies has not been explicitly addressed. In order to assess the role of phenotypic plasticity in determining skull variation, we compared skull morphology among continental tigers from zoos and the wild. In turn, we examine continental tiger skulls from across their wild range, to evaluate how the different environmental conditions experienced by individua…

Oral eosinophilic granulomas in tigers (Panthera tigris)--a collection of 16 cases.

Oral eosinophilic granulomas were diagnosed in 16 tigers (Panthera tigris). All lesions were located on the hard or soft palate and typically consisted of flat or slightly raised circular ulcers. Histologic features of these lesions were essentially identical to those seen in oral eosinophilic granulomas of domestic cats and dogs. No clinical signs were noted in eight cases, though various degrees of inappetence, excessive salivation, and dysphagia were noted in the other eight tigers. Six cases were not treated. Treatment for the remaining 10 cases centered on corticosteroids and additional t…

Molecular epidemiological investigation of viruses in Amur tigers in Northeast China.

A systematic molecular epidemiology survey was conducted on ten viruses in 226 captive and two wild Amur tigers from Northeast China. The target viruses were: feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), canine distemper virus (CDV), feline coronavirus (FCoV), feline calicivirus (FCV), influenza A virus (IAV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), and rotavirus A (RVA). The overall infection prevalence in captive tigers was 45.6% (103/226), with FPV (25.2%) and FHV-1 (20.4%) identified as the dominant pathogens. Other vir…

Canine distemper outbreak and laryngeal paralysis in captive tigers (Panthera tigris).

The canine distemper virus (CDV) could infect various wildlife species worldwide. The viral infection in large felids directly impacts wildlife conservation. This study aimed to understand better the burden of CDV outbreaks in captive tiger populations in Thailand and a novel discovery of their clinical signs with a history of CDV exposure. We followed up on their infection from May 2016 to October 2020 with laboratory testing and veterinary medical records. The cumulative morbidity and mortality rates were relatively high. Moreover, 50% of the tigers survived at 2 years after infection. All s…

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors regulate growth hormone in pituitary somatotrophs of tigers.

The Felidae exhibits remarkable diversity in body size, with lengths ranging from 50 to 370 cm and weights from 1.1 to 423 kg. However, the underlying mechanisms driving this variation remain poorly understood. Here, we focused on the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), the largest of the six extant tiger subspecies, and revealed the surprising expression of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in pituitary somatotrophs, which are crucial for regulating growth hormone (GH) secretion. Single-nucleus RNA sequencing of Siberian tiger pituitary cells exhibited the coexpression of CHRNA

Clinical, haematological and biochemical findings in tigers infected by Leishmania infantum.

BACKGROUND: A large number of animal species are susceptible to Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae) in endemic areas, including domestic and wild felids such as tigers (Panthera tigris). Knowledge on the infection of this endangered species is still at its infancy, and therefore this study aims to identify clinical presentation and clinicopathological findings of tigers naturally infected by L. infantum. RESULTS: Tigers either L. infantum-positive (group A) or -negative (group B) were apparently healthy or presented visceral leishmaniasis unrelated conditions, except for on…

Tiger Stripes in Carditis of Rheumatic Origin.

"Tiger stripes" or "Zebra stripes" are multiple band-like signals noted on Doppler spectral recordings and have been associated with intracardiac oscillating structures. They have been attributed to flail prosthetic valve leaflet, native valve regurgitation without flail leaflet, papillary muscle rupture in acute coronary syndrome, and possibly Lambl's excrescences. To our knowledge, there is only one case report in the English literature that had identified this sign in rheumatic carditis. We present the case of a 14-year-old boy, who was known to have rheumatic heart disease and presented wi

The Mpox, serious menace, or paper tiger?

One of the most horrible diseases in history, Smallpox is caused by the Variola from Poxvirus family, has caused great morbidity and mortality along the way since it was eradicated in the 20th century. During and after the eradication program for Variola, other Poxviruses such as the Monkeypox (Mpox) virus, which causes a smallpox-like disease, became flagrant. With its long range of enzymes and proteins, poxviruses are effectively resisting hostile immune system attacks and disrupting cell signaling pathways. After Smallpox vaccination, cross-reaction immunity develops between Orthopoxviruses

Cervical spine injury: tiger attack.

Reports of tiger attacks in the United States are rare. This article presents a case of a young woman who was violently attacked by a Siberian tiger and sustained penetrating trauma to the neck, cervical spine, and bilateral lower extremities. This article presents both diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients who may present with similar injuries. Animal bites from large animals are prone to infection in 10% to 20% of cases. Most infections are polymicrobial, with Pasteurella multicida being the most common isolate. Animal bites also mandate consideration of tetanus and rabies prophy
