Ethanol is a promising liquid clean energy source in the energy conversion field. However, the self-poisoning caused by the strongly adsorbed reaction intermediates (typically, CO) is a critical problem in ethanol oxidation reaction. Odd-electron bonds, i.e., the two-center, three-electron (2c/3e), or one-electron (2c/1e) bonds, have attracted tremendous interest owing to their novel bonding nature and radical properties. Herein, complex [K(THF)6][LSn:···Sn:L] (1), featuring the first and unsupported 2c/1e Sn···Sn σ-bond with a long distance (3.2155(9) Å), was synthesized by reduction of stannylene [LSn:] (L = N,N-dpp-o-phenylene diamide) with KC8. Tin(IV) very readily hydrolyses in solution, and forms hydrous tin oxide SnO(2)2.nH(2)O even in rather strongly acidic solution. In spite of a lack of reliable data on the hydrolysis of tin(IV) a consistent picture of the behaviour of tin(IV) in solution has been constructed. Some values for the formation of hydroxide and chloride complexes were deduced from electrochemical data. Inoculation of metallic tin powder produced marked proliferation of plasma cells and Russell body cells in draining lymph nodes. Prior, but not concurrent, administration of a soluble tin salt in the drinking water prevented the plasma cell hyperplasia. Various Na, Zn, Ag, and Cu salts were not inhibitory. The inhibitory effect of tin salts was detected as long as 2 months after the pretreatment was stopped. If the plasma cell response to metallic tin were due to an immunologic reaction, then the inhibition by a soluble tin salt may be a form of immunologic tolerance.

A novel and unusual three-dimensional network of tin atoms is present in NaSn5 , in which metallic layers analogous to those in β-Sn alternate with tetravalent units analogous to α-Sn. The compound shows the emergence of pentagonal-dodecahedral units from the metallic β-Sn modification (see structure on the right; all unlabeled spheres are Sn atoms). Quantum-mechanical investigations indicate the simultaneous presence of structural regions with localized and delocalized bonds.
