BACKGROUND: Tissue adhesives have been used for many years to close simple lacerations as an alternative to standard wound closure (sutures, staples, adhesive strips). They offer many potential advantages over standard wound closure, including ease of use, decrease in pain and time to apply, as well as not requiring a follow-up visit for removal. Many studies have compared tissue adhesives and standard wound closure to determine the cosmetic outcome as well as these other secondary outcomes in their respective study populations. However, due to the wide variation in study parameters, there are…

Conventional mechanical closure remains widely used in tissue repair, but sutures and staples inevitably cause penetration injury and local stress concentration, limiting their effectiveness in fragile tissues and minimally invasive procedures. Tissue adhesives offer atraumatic sealing, yet conventional adhesive formats and curing modes, including thermal initiation, pH-triggered gelation, and preformed patches, often struggle to combine precise control with physiological compatibility. Photoinitiated adhesives enable on-demand initiation of the curing process via external light-triggered in s…

AIMS: This study examines the intraperitoneal behavior of two cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives: Ifabond® and a new, non-marketed octyl cyanoacrylate adhesive (OCA) used for the intraperitoneal fixation of a laminar expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) mesh.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 36 New Zealand White rabbits, 3 × 3 cm (n = 24) or 1.5 × 3 cm (n = 12) fragments of ePTFE mesh (Preclude® , Gore, Flagstaff, USA) were fixed to the parietal peritoneum using OCA or Ifabond® . Peritoneal fluid was obtained at the time of implant and at 2 weeks postimplant for determination of the cytokines interle…

Tissue adhesives have a long history of use in almost all surgical disciplines, both as an alternative and a complement to sutures. Nevertheless, ophthalmologists have restricted knowledge of their potential applications; consequently, tissue adhesives have been underutilized so far. This review discusses the most relevant clinical and experimental advances in the use of tissue adhesives in ophthalmology and details the characteristics and properties of the glues. Among the currently available adhesives, synthetic glues are mainly represented by cyanoacrylates and biologic glues by fibrin-base…

BACKGROUND: Dermatologic surgery generally requires the removal of offending or excessive tissue followed by repair of the resultant defect. The functional and cosmetic outcome is increasingly important as patients' expectations grow and physicians become increasingly aware of surgical materials and techniques that enable them to repair defects in a functionally and cosmetically appealing manner.
OBJECTIVE: To perform an updated and thorough review of the literature regarding sutures, surgical tape, tissue adhesives and stitching techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature …

In this study, three kinds of two-component adhesive glues were prepared, namely, gel-dext glue made from modified gelatin and dextran, gel-HES glue made from modified gelatin and hydroxyethyl starch (HES), and chit-dext glue made from chitosan and modified dextran. Upon mixing the two-component solution together crosslinking occurred and a gel formed in several seconds, which would seal the wound tissue and stop the bleeding. The adhesive ability of those three prepared glues was evaluated in vitro and in vivo separately by measuring the bonding strength to two piece of porcine skin and the a

PURPOSE: To evaluate 2 novel biodendrimer tissue adhesives in sealing and securing laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flaps.
SETTING: Duke University Eye Center, Durham, North Carolina, USA.
METHODS: Laser in situ keratomileusis flaps were created in 10 human eye-bank eyes using the Hansatome microkeratome system (Bausch & Lomb). These eyes were divided into 2 groups. Flaps in the first group (n=4) were secured with a laser-activated biodendrimer adhesive along the flap edge. In the second group (n=6), the flaps were secured with a self-gelling dendritic adhesive. Dry Merocel sponges (Medt…

PURPOSE: Comparison of conjunctival closure with fibrin glue and conventional closure in strabismus surgeries.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients undergoing strabismus surgery were studied. Group 1 included twelve cases in whom Tisseel was used for closure and group 2 included seventeen cases in whom 7/0 Vicryl was used. Severity of redness, watering, pain, and discomfort in opening eyes were evaluated postoperatively.
RESULTS: In the first hour, severe pain was experienced in both groups without statistical significance; but in group 1, pain was less severe in the 12th and 24th hour (P < .0001).

BACKGROUND: While tissue adhesives are widely used in the closure of surgical incisions, contact dermatitis remains a poorly characterized complication. Dermabond™ (Ethicon; DB) and LiquiBand® (Advanced Medical Solutions; LB) are two commonly used tissue adhesives; however, there are no direct data comparing their risk of contact dermatitis. In this randomized controlled trial, we compare the rate of contact dermatitis associated with DB versus LB in patients undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgery.
METHODS: This was a single-center, intra-patient randomized controlled trial which included …

AIMS: Recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula is a severe postoperative complication after esophageal atresia repair. Endoscopic obliteration with tissue adhesives has been used as an alternative to reoperation. The aim of this study is to review our experience with such procedure.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The medical records of 415 esophageal atresia patients were retrospectively reviewed in order to analyze the incidence of complications and the outcome of patients in whom tissue adhesives were used to close a recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula.
RESULTS: 334 patients underwent an esophageal anas…

Endoscopically guided intravascular injections of the tissue glue N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate have since 1990 been performed in eight patients (seven men, one woman; median age 59.5 [40-72] years) with cirrhosis of the liver (alcoholic: n = 6, posthepatic, n = 2), decreased haemoglobin (6-10 g/dl) and transient shock symptoms (n = 5) due to gastric (n = 7) or duodenal varices (n = 1). Gastric acid production was suppressed with omeprazole. Neither balloon catheters nor drugs were used to lower portal vein pressure. Initial haemostasis was achieved in all patients. One patient with consumption coag

Fractures of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus, complicated by impression of bone fragments, can cause serious functional and cosmetic disturbances. Surgeons often remove those fragments and obliterate the sinus. But disfigurement from the operation will be worse than that caused by original lesion and can only be corrected by further plastic surgery. Some surgeons use the technique of joining bone fragments by metal or thread sutures but it is only possible when the fragment are not too small. We present four patients treated over a period of 1975-1979 with the reconstruction of the fron

It is dealt with the effects of various butycyano-acrylate type surgical adhesives on gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial species. The experimental results show a growth-inhibiting effect on gram-positive germs. Gram-negative germs are not affected. The growth inhibition produced by SO2-containing adhesives is greater than that caused by SO2-free ones. As compared to Histoacryl blue, the Fimomed variants showed a broader spectrum. Furthermore, it was stated that the adhesive exerts its growth-inhibiting effect not only in the monomeric, but also in the polymeric state. A relationship bet
