High and low brushing force in relation to efficacy and gingival abrasion.

OBJECTIVES: Does a high brushing force induce more gingival abrasion than a low (regular) brushing force? Furthermore, what is the effect of a low or high force on the efficacy? METHODS: Thirty-five non-dental students were selected. All received an appointment prior to which they abstained from oral hygiene for at least 48 h. At baseline the teeth and surrounding tissues were disclosed using Mira-2-Tone disclosing solution. Next, the examiner (PAV) evaluated the number of sites with gingival abrasion and the amount of dental plaque (Quigley & Hein) at 6 surfaces of each tooth. In the absence

Double Connective Tissue Graft to Treat Deep Coronal-Radicular Abrasion: A 19-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: When gingival recession is combined with cervical abrasion, root coverage outcomes are less predictable due to the challenging adaptation of the connective tissue graft (CTG) to the marked root step. Removing additional tooth structure can improve soft-tissue adaptation with the downside of a possible increase in dental hypersensitivity or pulpitis. Therefore, the aim of this report was to demonstrate a surgical technique using two grafts which does not require any further modification of the root surface, in order to successfully treat recession associated with deep cervical abr

Unique Tooth Morphology and Prismatic Enamel in Late Cretaceous Sphenodontians from Argentina.

Mammals and reptiles have evolved divergent adaptations for processing abrasive foods. Mammals have occluding, diphyodont dentitions with taller teeth (hypsodonty), more complex occlusal surfaces, continuous tooth eruption, and forms of prismatic enamel that prolong the functional life of each tooth [1, 2]. The evolution of prismatic enamel in particular was a key innovation that made individual teeth more resilient to abrasion in early mammals [2-4]. In contrast, reptiles typically have thin, non-prismatic enamel, and shearing, polyphyodont dentitions with multi-cusped or serrated tooth crown

Abrasion, erosion, and abfraction combined with linear enamel hypoplasia: a case report.

Linear enamel hypoplasia is a developmental disturbance of enamel resulting in clinically visible horizontal defects in enamel that are present on eruption of the tooth. Nondevelopmental lesions of the hard tissues of the tooth, including carious, abrasion, erosion, attrition, and abfraction lesions, require varying amounts of time after tooth eruption to develop. Because linear enamel hypoplasia lesions are present on eruption and are exposed to the factors responsible for abrasion, erosion, and abfraction, nondevelopmental lesions could occur within them in any combination. This report descr

[Microstructural studies on abraded facettes in the dentin].

Using transmission electorn microscopy, a homogeneous deposition on abrasion facets in the dentin was observed in sections. This deposition ranged between 0.2 and 0.74 micrometer in thickness. In the area of the dental tubules, this layer may be dissolved with a 5% solution of acetic acid. It however is basically preserved in the region of the intertubular dentine.

[Epidemiology of teeth hypersensitivity].

A clinical examination of 98 patients aged 20 to 75 years was carried out to identifyclinical and epidemiological features of hard tooth tissueshypersensitivity. The survey found out what stimuli (cold, hot, sour, mechanical, chemical) cause the appearance of dental hyperesthesia. The detailed survey of the affected area aimed to determine the presence of dental caries, gingival recession, wedge-shaped defects, erosions, microcracks and chipped enamel, as well as wear of the tooth crown. Forty-threepatients of 98 (43.88%) had tooth sensitivity. Most affected age group was 25-34 years (33%). Am

[Aesthetic management of erosive tooth wear using injection molding technique].

In this article, on the example of a clinical case, the technique of restoring two central teeth in a patient with increased enamel erasability with highly filled fluid composite materials using injection techniques is described. The application of this technique has become possible because the new fluid composites have similar mechanical, physical and aesthetic properties to universal composite materials.

Toothpaste abrasive requirements to control naturally stained pellicle. The relation of cleaning power to toothpaste abrasivity.

Toothpaste abrasivity should be sufficiently high to give effective cleaning without causing mechanical damage to tooth tissue. A clinical trial carried out to measure the cleaning power of calcium carbonate toothpastes of different abrasivity is described; cleaning power is then related to in vitro dentine abrasivity measurements. These findings are used to derive an expression specifying the toothpaste cleaning power which ensures that a chosen low and cosmetically acceptable level of stain is not exceeded providing a consistent daily brushing routine is adhered to.

Tooth wear in the mixed dentition: a comparative study between children born in the 1950s and the 1990s.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of tooth wear in posterior deciduous teeth of 100 subjects in the second phase of mixed dentition who were born in the 1950s (50sG) and 100 subjects born in the 1990s (90sG). The degree of abrasion for each posterior deciduous tooth was scored ranging from 0 to 3. The comparison of the degree of abrasion showed significant differences between the two groups for all examined teeth (upper and lower deciduous canines and first and second primary molars) all of which appeared to be more abraded in the 50sG. The findings of the present study indicate

Dental erosion. Definition, classification and links.

An overview of tooth wear, i.e. of non-carious destructive processes affecting the teeth including abrasion, demastication, attrition, abfraction, resorption and erosion is presented. The nomenclature and classification of dental erosion commonly used in the dental literature are summarized. They are based on etiology (extrinsic, intrinsic, idiopathic), on clinical severity (Classes I to III), on pathogenetic activity (manifest, latent) or on localization (perimolysis). Interactions between erosion and abrasion, demastication, attrition, and abfraction as well as caries and low salivary flow r

Artificial grooves on the Krapina Neanderthal teeth.

Gross and microscopic examination of the Krapina Neanderthal dental remains reveals the presence of artificial grooves along the cemento-enamel junction of 14 teeth representing ten different individuals. The grooves display distinct morphological features including their consistent location (primarily on the mesial and/or distal root walls), their troughlike appearance, striations and/or polishing in the channel, and the ridges of reactive cementum bordering the groove. These grooves occur only on erupted, permanent teeth, and except for a single occurrence on a lower I2, all are located on m

Cervical wear and occlusal wear from a periodontal perspective.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cervical wear was associated with occlusal wear and clinical periodontal parameters in relatively older adults. A total of 30 patients, with multiple non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and without a disease or condition that could cause heavy tooth wear, were included in the study. The periodontal parameters including plaque index, probing pocket depth, gingival recession (GR) and tooth mobility were obtained from 641 teeth of which 475 (74·1%) displayed NCCLs. The levels of cervical wear and occlusal wear were determined according to a tooth

Assessment of minimally invasive caries excavation methods on caries-affected human dentin: A comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a major global health issue, leading to tooth loss, infections, and even systemic complications. Modern dentistry favours minimally invasive caries removal, but its impact on the bond between composite and caries-affected dentin requires further study. The present in vitro analysis evaluated the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of composite bonded to human dentin impacted by caries, after three caries removal methods: SmartPrep bur, chemo-mechanical removal, and air abrasion. The null hypothesis posited no significant difference in bond strength among the techniqu

Toothbrushing and gingival recession.

To review the hypothesis that toothbrushing leads to gingival recession. Gingival recession develops due to anatomical and pathological fact … emain elusive or do not support the development of recession following toothbrushing. Nevertheless, tooth abrasion may be an integral part in the aetiology of recession. Toothbrush abrasion also may cause wear at the cemento-enamel junction resulting in the destruction of the supporting periodontium leading to recession.

DENTAL WEAR DUE TO ATTRITION AND ABRASION IN FREE-RANGING COATIS (NASUA NASUA) FROM SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL.

Coatis (Nasua nasua, Linnaeus, 1766), omnivorous mammals of the family Procyonidae of the order Carnivora, are ubiquitous in South America. Their diet varies seasonally, with a greater intake of invertebrates and small vertebrates during fruit-scarce periods. This study aimed to evaluate dental wear and dental formula variations in free-ranging coatis from Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil, using the modified Triadan system. Coatis typically have 40-42 teeth, with a dental formula of 2 × (3/3 incisors, 1/1 canines, 4/4 premolars, 2/2-3 molars). They exhibit heterodont, brachydont, and anisognathic d
