Fracture of tooth enamel from incipient microstructural defects.

We present definitive evidence for crack growth from internal defects called 'tufts' in human enamel. Transverse slices (normal to the tooth axis) sawn from extracted human teeth are embedded in a polycarbonate sandwich configuration and tested in simple flexural loading. The evolution of ensuing cracks across the enamel sections is viewed in situ by a video camera. The observations unequivocally identify tufts as sources of internal tooth fracture. In sufficiently thin slices the enamel becomes translucent, allowing for through-thickness observations of the crack topography. Crack segments th

A retrospective study on the approach to the tooth in the fracture line of the mandible.

UNLABELLED: The presence of a tooth in the fracture line constitutes a specific problem in mandibular fractures. Therefore, our objective was to characterize the approach to teeth in the fracture line used in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Plovdiv, by retrospectively investigating the association between various preoperative factors and the decision to extract or preserve the tooth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The following variables were studied based on data from available hospital records: 1) gender and age of patients; 2) local preoperative infections; 3) time from trauma to treatment

Orthodontic movement of a horizontally fractured tooth: a case report.

Intra-alveolar root fractures are relatively uncommon, and sometimes may be healed without treatment. Diagnosis of intra-alveolar root fracture is frequently made by exclusion of clinical signs of other traumatic injury, and by radiographic examination with films taken at different tube angulations. This case report presents a horizontal root fractured tooth that was healed satisfactory without treatment and moved orthodontically after prolonged time from trauma.

Relationship between Craniofacial Skeletal Patterns and the Prevalence of Tooth Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Tooth fractures are associated with various etiological factors, including occlusal stress. While science has shown associations between maximum bite force and craniofacial skeletal patterns, a direct link between skeletal morphology and the prevalence of tooth fractures has not been established. This study aimed to investigate whether sagittal and vertical skeletal patterns, as determined by cephalometric analysis, are associated with the prevalence of tooth fractures in an adult orthodontic population. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 1001 adult orthodontic pat…

Reattaching fractured tooth fragments. The composite rod technique (CRT).

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has recently been linked to a number of cardiovascular diseases, particularly hypertension (HT). In our study, we aimed to evaluate the association between air pollution and blood pressure (BP) and compare the relationship of BP measurement results obtained using different methods (office, home, and 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring [ABPM]). METHODS: This retrospective nested panel study performed with prospective Cappadocia cohort data investigated the relationships between particulate matter (PM) 10 and sulfur dioxide (SO2) and concurrent home, office, and 24-hour A

Ultraconservative and Aesthetic Approach for Rehabilitation of Complicated Crown Fracture of Tooth.

Dental trauma is well considered to be a general health issue. The prevalence of tooth fracture in the anterior region looks for a conservative approach to treatment. Currently, a novel and ultraconservative approach is the most popular treatment option for the rehabilitation of the fractured tooth. Fragment removal and proper repositioning followed by retention of the tooth's fragments using adhesive techniques provides added benefits such as aesthetics, restoration of surface gloss, function, shape, and texture, as well as maintaining the tooth's position and original morphology. Satisfactor

Multidisciplinary approach to a subgingivally fractured incisor tooth: A case report.

This case report describes a multidisciplinary approach using orthodontic forced eruption to facilitate prosthetic restoration of a subgingivally fractured maxillary permanent central incisor. A 14-year-old male patient presented at the pediatric dental clinic due to unesthetic appareance and for management of a fractured maxillary right central incisor tooth. Intraoral examination revealed that the maxillary right central incisor had sustained a crown-root fracture with pulp exposure. We treated the tooth endodontically and performed orthodontic root extrusion with a modified Hawley appliance

A multidisciplinary approach to the management of a subgingivally fractured tooth: a clinical report.

Anterior tooth fracture is the most common type of trauma occurring to the dental tissues. Teeth fracturing at or below the gingival level usually have a poor prognosis, with extraction of the tooth being the most probable outcome. Clinical crown lengthening followed by prosthetic rehabilitation is a promising approach toward such cases. The clinical report presented here explains in detail the various treatment modalities available for such cases with special emphasis on orthodontic extrusion/forced eruption.

Surgical extraction of a fractured, non-vital deciduous tooth in a tiger.

A 10-month-old, female/intact tiger (Panthra tigris) was presented for a fractured deciduous mandibular right canine tooth, mandibular swelling, and a cutaneous draining tract ventral to the apex of the fractured tooth. The tooth had chronic pulpal exposure and was considered non-vital with periapical osteomyelitis. This case report describes treatment to optimize normal development and eruption of the permanent mandibular right canine tooth.

[Pathologic fracture of the tibia associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease].

The authors report a case of pathologic fracture of the distal tibia associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Pathologic fracture was visible four weeks after initial pain. Treatment consisted in a short leg walking cast for six weeks. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a slowly progressive neurogenic muscular atrophy affecting the distal parts of the lower limbs. The muscular atrophy is responsible for radiographic bony changes including narrowing of the shaft with thinning of the cortex, rarefaction at the end of the long bones and relative widening of the medullary cavity. Pathologic fractu

Deep learning-based fractured tooth detection in occlusal radiographs.

BACKGROUND: This study highlights the importance of accurate and quick diagnosis of detection, and classification of fractured teeth and the potential benefits of applying deep learning (DL) techniques to solve this problem. METHODS: In the study, occlusal radiography (OR) of the premaxilla is used for tooth fracture detection of teeth 11 and 21. For that, a dataset that contains 200 ORs of various tooth conditions was constructed. In the proposed method, teeth 11 and 21 are automatically detected in OR images using a YOLOv9-based machine learning framework as the first step. Then, images of

Management of subgingivally fractured maxillary anterior tooth: a multidisciplinary approach.

The major challenge in traumatic injuries is the management of subgingival fracture of anterior teeth. Forced orthodontic extrusion is a suitable approach for these teeth as it provides both a sound tissue margin for final restoration and creates a periodontal environment (biological width) which is easy for the patient to maintain. Restoration after orthodontic eruption may present a more conservative treatment choice in young patients compared with the prosthetic restoration after extraction. This paper reports a case of the fractured maxillary anterior tooth at the subgingival level that wa

Differentiating spontaneous vertical root fracture in endodontically treated tooth.

Although vertical root fracture (VRF) is mostly found in endodontically treated teeth, it also occurs spontaneously. If VRF is recognized after endodontic treatment, it is considered to be iatrogenic and can lead to legal trouble. However, legal problems can be averted if the dentist can prove that the VRF existed before endodontic treatment. This case report describes an unusual, spontaneous VRF in an endodontically treated tooth and presents a useful tip for determining whether a fracture is iatrogenic. We performed nonsurgical endodontic treatment on a mandibular first molar with irreversib

Impacted tooth in mandibular fracture line: treatment with closed reduction.

PURPOSE: Most mandibular fractures occur because of blunt trauma. In some cases, the mandible can be weakened by the presence of an unerupted or impacted tooth. The fate of this tooth in the fracture line and its effects on bone healing remain an important outcome event. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we analyzed the records of 117 patients with a total of 121 fractures having an unerupted tooth remaining in the fracture line who were treated and followed by the Dental Faculty of Ankara University between 1986 and 1996. All were open fractures, and none of the patients had a history of
