Many studies suggest associations between oral health and cardiovascular diseases, but there is a lack of causal evidence. Exploiting exogenous variation in tooth loss in US adults due to differential childhood exposure to fluoridated water, this study investigated the causal effect of tooth loss on cardiovascular diseases. A total of 722,519 participants in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) waves 2006, 2008, or 2010 (birth years 1940-1978) were included in the analytical sample. To identify the effect of tooth loss on having a history of coronary heart disease (CHD) or st…

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The term "fracture necrosis" has been used to describe the condition found in a minimally restored tooth without a history of trauma when the suspected etiology for the loss of pulpal vitality is a crown-originating fracture. Teeth with fracture necrosis have a poor prognosis, and, when accompanied by characteristic radiographic findings, extraction may be considered the primary treatment option.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Two adult men with crown-originating fractures and suspected fracture necrosis had localized periodontal bone and attachment loss associated with severe pa

Although the relationship between number of teeth and gastric disturbances has been recognised, limited data are available linking tooth loss and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study aimed to investigate the relation between dental status and IBS among Iranian adults. In a cross-sectional study on 4669 Iranian adults, dental status was evaluated using a self-administered questionnaire. Participants were categorised into five main groups: those with full dentition (without denture), those with denture, individual who had lost 1-2 teeth, 3-5 teeth and half of one jaw or more. IBS and its s…

Tooth surface loss can present in a variety of ways, some of which can appear rather strange on first examination. This case report demonstrates an unusual presentation of tooth surface loss (TSL) and its subsequent treatment. This loss of hard dental tissue appeared to be affecting the whole of the patient's remaining dentition, both lingually and buccally. Detailed questioning revealed the origins of this problem which turned out to be due to excessive use of an intra-oral Miswak chewing stick. Cinical Relevance: This article will enable clinicians to understand the importance of specific, t

Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) is thought to have a faster rate of progression than chronic periodontitis (CP). However, there is a lack of studies systematically investigating disease progression and tooth loss in AgP. A systematic search of the literature was conducted by two independent reviewers for longitudinal studies including patients with AgP (previously known as 'periodontosis', 'juvenile' or 'early-onset' periodontitis) indicating measures of disease progression. Ovid MEDLINE(®) and Embase databases were searched for at least 5-year longitudinal human studies in AgP patients. In tot…

Systemic antibiotics have been recommended for the treatment of destructive periodontal disease. Our goal was to relate antibiotic use for medical or dental reasons to subsequent tooth loss in a cohort of 12,631 persons with destructive periodontal disease. After adjustment for age, smoking, and other confounders, the dispensing of antibiotics for 1-13 days, 14-20 days, or 21 or more days was not associated with reduced tooth loss [Adjusted rate ratio (RR) = 1.0; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 0.8-1.1; RR = 1.2; 95% CI = 0.9-1.4, and RR =1.2, 95% CI =1.0-1.3, respectively]. We present a clinical case of tooth-surface loss affecting the palatal surfaces of the upper incisors, caused by prolonged pregnancy-induced vomiting. The patient was successfully treated, first orthodontically and then with indirect composite palatal veneers. As dental practitioners, we should be aware of this problem when screening pregnant patients, as early diagnosis and prevention are important.

In the article the relation between initial mobility of incisors of both jaws and the level of marginal alveolar bone is described. The regression lines representing the dependence of mobility on marginal bone level at various loading forces confirm stepwise the nature of the force transmission from tooth to periodontal support tissues. The dependence of regression line slope on increasing inflammatory periodontal pathology indicates increasing loading of alveolar bone over tension of connective tissue fibers as well as increasing of pressure. This can further accelerate alveolar bone resorpti

Previous evidence suggests the association of lower educational attainment and depressive symptoms with tooth loss. The hypothesis of this study was that these factors may exacerbate the effect on tooth loss beyond the sum of their individual effects. We aimed to clarify the independent and interactive effects of educational attainment and depressive symptoms on the number of missing teeth among community residents. Cross-sectional data of 9,647 individuals were collected from the general Japanese population. Dental examination was conducted by dentists. Educational attainment was categorized …

Periodontitis is a primarily bacterial infection that is common in dentate individuals, while denture stomatitis is a predominantly fungal infection that is common among denture wearers. Both infections may increase a patient's risk for chronic systemic infection dissemination, and may in turn increase the risk of chronic, inflammatory-based systemic diseases. Systemic diseases for which chronic oral infections are believed to confer attributable risk include atherosclerotic and coronary disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, and hypertension. It appears that invasiv

OBJECTIVES: To describe: (1) the 24-month incidence of tooth loss in a diverse sample of dentate adults; and (2) the clinical, attitudinal, behavioral, and sociodemographic correlates of tooth loss incidence.
METHODS: The Florida Dental Care Study is a prospective longitudinal cohort study of persons who at baseline had at least one tooth, were 45 years or older, and who resided in north Florida. An in-person interview and clinical examination were conducted at baseline and 24-months after baseline, with 6-monthly telephone interviews between those times. A two-level hierarchical generalized …

Cracked teeth represent a growing concern in endodontic practice, driven by biomechanical, evolutionary, and lifestyle factors. While traditionally approached as a condition requiring reactive treatment, contemporary endodontics must now shift toward prevention. This article explores the multifactorial nature of cracked teeth, including parafunctional habits, malocclusion, modern dietary patterns, and the evolutionary mismatch between human dentition and present-day lifestyles. The paper outlines key risk factors such as bruxism, malocclusion, and enamel demineralization, while also discussing

A dental implant is used to replace a missing tooth. Fixing the implant in its natural position requires the engineering of a substantial amount of conformal bone growth inside the implant socket, osseointegration. However, this conventional implant attachment does not include the periodontal ligament (PDL), which has a fundamental role in cushioning high mechanical loads. As a result, tooth implants have a shorter lifetime than the natural tooth and have a high chance of infections. We have engineered a "bio-implant" that provides a living PDL connection for titanium implants. The bio-implant

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have linked dementia to the subsequent deterioration of oral health. Few investigators, however, have examined oral disease as a potential risk factor in the development of dementia. The authors conducted a study to investigate a potential association between a history of oral disease and the development of dementia.
METHODS: Longitudinal dental records supplemented data collected from 10 annual cognitive assessments of 144 Milwaukee participants in the Nun Study, a longitudinal study of aging and Alzheimer disease, who were 75 to 98 years old. Neuropathologic fin

Tooth loss is a known risk factor of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the association of tooth loss with the molecular pathogenesis of AD is still unknown. The hypothesis that the molecular pathogenesis of AD is enhanced by molar tooth loss was tested. Seventeen female transgenic mice (J20) were divided into the experimental (EX, n=10) and control (C, n=7) groups. In the EX group, maxillary bilateral molar teeth were extracted at the age of 6 months. In the C group, however, these teeth remained intact. Passive avoidance test was performed to evaluate learning and memory abilities right afte…

The purpose of this study was to investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between hearing acuity and tooth loss in 1156 US veterans taking part in the Veterans Affairs' Normative Aging (NAS) and Dental Longitudinal (DLS) Studies in the Boston, MA, area. The mean age was 48 years (SD = 8.9), 5.3% were edentulous, and 15.4% had < 17 teeth at baseline. Hearing acuity was determined by puretone, air- and bone-conduction audiometry, and speech discrimination tests at triennial examinations over a 20-year follow-up period. Hearing decline was defined as a change from baseline in the…
