INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous epistaxis is one of the most frequent problems in emergency services. New treatment alternatives have emerged, including topical tranexamic acid. However, there is controversy about the actual efficacy of this alternative.
METHODS: We searched in Epistemonikos, the largest database of systematic reviews in health, which is maintained by screening multiple information sources, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, among others. We extracted data from the systematic reviews, reanalyzed data of primary studies, conducted a meta-analysis and generated a summary of finding

Some factors have been identified as contributing to medical errors such as labels, appearance, and location of ampules. In this case report, inadvertent intrathecal injection of 80 mg tranexamic acid was followed by severe pain in the back and the gluteal region, myoclonus on lower extremities and agitation. General anesthesia was induced to complete surgery. At the end of anesthesia, patient developed polymyoclonus and seizures needing supportive care of the hemodynamic, and respiratory systems. He developed ventricular tachycardia treated with Cordarone infusion. The patient's condition pro

BACKGROUND: Melasma is a prevalent skin condition that primarily affects females of reproductive age. Despite the various available treatments, managing melasma is challenging due to frequent relapses and partial responses. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has gained attention as a potential treatment because of its antifibrinolytic and anti-melanogenic properties. However, there is still limited information on the efficacy of oral versus topical TXA formulations.
AIM: The present investigation explored the efficacy and safety of topical versus oral TXA in melasma patients to determine whether topical a

Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic drug that inhibits the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, thereby reducing the enzymatic degradation of fibrin and preserving hemostasis across various surgical fields. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a frequently performed surgical procedure to manage nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO), in which intraoperative bleeding remains a significant challenge that may impair visualization and prolong operative time. However, the overall impact of TXA in DCR remains uncertain. This systematic review aimed to examine the current research on the role of TX

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Bleeding at the time of benign gynecologic surgery, as well as from benign gynecologic conditions, is a major source of morbidity for many women. Few nonhormonal medical options exist for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding, and to reduce surgical bleeding during major gynecologic surgery. Interest in Tranexamic acid (TXA) as a means to reduce surgical blood loss has been growing across many surgical specialties. This review focuses on applications for TXA as a means to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) as well as to reduce surgical bleeding during benign gynecolog

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative tranexamic acid (TXA) administration has been used to abate blood loss in a variety of surgical procedures. Several recent studies have supported its efficacy in reducing transfusion requirements in pediatric cranial vault reconstruction (CVR).
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a retrospective chart review to determine whether a significant reduction in packed red blood cell (PRBC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusions exists when TXA is used.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 28 patients who underwent CVR for sagittal craniosynostosis was performed. Transfusion re

This study evaluated oral tranexamic acid as an adjunct in controlling epistaxis and preventing or reducing recurrent epistaxis. Patients entered into the trial were randomized in double blind fashion to placebo or tranexamic acid 1 g, 3 times daily. Treatment continued for 10 days. The patients were reviewed daily and any rebleeds categorized into minor, moderate or severe according to length and briskness of bleed and subsequent treatment. Of the 89 patients who completed the course of tablets, 25 (57%) in the placebo group and 21 (47%) in the treatment group had a rebleed. More patients in

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic lysine analog that inhibits fibrinolysis by blocking lysine-binding sites on plasminogen and plasmin. Although early therapeutic TXA reduces bleeding mortality in major trials, prophylactic benefit appears context- and timing-dependent. TXA is generally not associated with increased thromboembolism, yet its net effect on thrombus formation remains uncertain. Because plasmin(ogen) also acts on leukocytes, endothelium and platelets via cell-surface receptors, TXA may exert cell-dependent effects beyond antifibrinolysis.

Tranexamic acid is a commonly used hemostatic agent with broad clinical uses across multiple specialties. Systemic toxicity is due to gamma-aminobutyric acid type A and glycine receptor competitive antagonism and has been reported by multiple routes, but toxicity after pulmonary administration via nebulization and BAL has not yet been described. A 44-year-old man with a history of congenital pulmonary arteriovenous malformations underwent routine bronchoscopy for hemoptysis. He received preprocedure nebulized tranexamic acid 500 mg three times daily for 48 h. An additional 1,000 mg was given v

Tranexamic acid (TA) emerged as a promising agent for melasma. However, due to its hydrophilic structure, topical TA should be combined with a penetration-enhancing strategy to augment efficacy. To evaluate the efficacy of fractional erbium:YAG laser-assisted delivery (LAD) of topical TA 5% either with or without oral TA treatment in recalcitrant melasma patients. The authors retrospectively assessed the treatment outcomes of melasma patients treated by fractional erbium:YAG LAD of topical TA 5%. Patients receiving a standard protocol including four biweekly laser sessions were eligible. The s

Tranexamic acid is a plasmin inhibitor that is used off-label for the treatment of melasma. The use of tranexamic acid has expanded in the field of dermatology based on its anti-inflammatory and anti-melanin-producing properties, which include the treatment of rosacea, urticaria, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Tranexamic acid may have more uses in dermatology that require future studies. It should be used with caution during the COVID-19 pandemic given its procoagulant nature.
