DNA barcoding reveals cryptic diversity in chiggers (Trombiculidae) parasitizing small mammals across Peninsular Malaysia.

Chiggers (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) are ectoparasites of small mammals and important vectors of scrub typhus, yet their taxonomy and molecular diversity in Southeast Asia remain poorly resolved. This study represents the first DNA barcoding and phylogenetic assessment of chiggers from small mammals across Peninsular Malaysia, integrating mitochondrial (COI) and nuclear (28 S rDNA) genes. A total of 192 chiggers representing 11 morphospecies from six genera were sequenced, with tree topologies inferred using maximum likelihood and supported by multiple species delimitation methods. The COI ge…

A Novel Strain of Orientia tsutsugamushi Detected from Chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae) on Wild Rodents.

Scrub typhus is caused by intracellular bacteria belonging to the genus Orientia. Until 2010, the endemic region was thought to be restricted to the Asia-Pacific region. Orientia species have recently been discovered in South America, Africa, Europe, and North America. In accordance with these circumstances, we tried to find new or novel bacterial strains in the Republic of Korea (ROK). We found that a new strain of O. tsutsugamushi formed a unique clade based on a 56-kDa type-specific antigen gene and showed 63.2-77.8% similarity to other strains of the same species. Additionally, we identifi

Seasonal development of Leptotrombidium pallidum (Acari: Trombiculidae) observed by experimental rearing in the natural environment.

Engorged larvae of Leptotrombidium pallidum Nagayo, Miyagawa, Mitamura & Tamiya, the vector mite of scrub typhus in Japan, were reared by feeding them with fresh eggs of the collembolan Sinella curviseta Brook while confined in small plastic containers under natural conditions in a copse. The larvae were collected from wild rodents (Apodemus speciosus) in autumn 1985 and spring 1986. Adults were kept alive for 2 yr or longer. The larvae obtained in autumn became dormant in the cold winter season, and growth recommenced in the spring. Thus, the development of mites collected in April became syn

Parasitism, seasonality, and diversity of trombiculid mites (Trombidiformes: Parasitengona, Trombiculidae) infesting bats (Chiroptera) in Poland.

The study aims to ascertain the diversity of trombiculid species associated with Chiroptera in Poland, and for the first time in the case of research on Central European Trombiculidae, we use both DNA and morphology in an integrative taxonomic approach to determine species identities of trombiculids. The research was carried out from 2015 to 2019. In total, 2725 larvae were collected from 300 specimens of bats belonging to 11 species. Deutonymphs were obtained through laboratory rearing of larvae; few larvae and deutonymphs were collected also from bats' daily roosts. The presence of trombicul…

A new member of the trombiculid mite family Neotrombicula nagayoi (Acari: Trombiculidae) induces human dermatitis.

We present the first definitive evidence that the mite Neotrombicula nagayoi bites humans under natural conditions in Japan. Initially, bites resulted in mild pruritus without pain. However, skin reactions increased gradually year by year with severe pruritus with pain being reported by the victim after being bitten repeatedly. Six species of trombiculid mites comprising three genera were isolated from soil samples collected from August to October in both 2001 and 2002 at a study site where a man was bitten by N. nagayoi. The dominant species was L. intermedium (72.4%) followed by L. pallidum

Vertical transmission of Orientia tsutsugamushi in two lines of naturally infected Leptotrombidium deliense (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Vertical transmission of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi), the etiologic agent for scrub typhus, was studied in two lines of naturally infected Leptotrombidium deliense Walch. In one line of mites originating from a single adult (V3M), the rate of filial transmission was 100% for the first two laboratory generations, but declined to 86.6% in the third laboratory generation. The vertical infection rate in this line of mites was 100% for the parental generation, but declined to 95.6% for the F1 generation and 88.6% for F2. The transmission of O. tsutsugamushi in another line of L. deliense (V3F)

Efficacy of three pyrethroids against Leptotrombidium fletcheri (Acari: Trombiculidae) infected and noninfected with scrub typhus.

Toxicities of three pyrethroids, d-phenothrin, decamethrin, and permethrin, were evaluated in the laboratory against Leptotrombidium fletcheri (Womersley & Heaslip). The susceptibilities between populations of the species infected and noninfected with scrub typhus were investigated. The three pesticides exhibited different toxicities to the chiggers. D- phenothrin was the most toxic, followed by decamethrin, then permethrin. There were no significant differences between susceptibilities of the infected and noninfected populations. Log-probit regression lines indicated that the species was most

Annotated world checklist of the Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhoekiidae (17582021) (Acari: Trombiculoidea), with notes on nomenclature, taxonomy, and distribution.

The superfamily Trombiculoidea is a large and diverse group of acarines that comprises six families; of these, the families Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhoekiidae are characterized by larvae commonly known as chiggers that are parasites of terrestrial vertebrates, including humans, and some species are of medical importance as vectors of chigger-borne rickettsiosis (scrub typhus), caused by the rickettsia Orientia tsutsugamushi. This paper presents an annotated checklist of 3,013 generally accepted chigger species, together with their distribution by zoogeographic region, and a non-comprehensive l…

Occurrence of Orientia tsutsugamushi in chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae) and small animals in an orchard near Bangkok, Thailand.

The ecology of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi) was studied in chiggers and small animals in an orchard near Bangkok, Thailand. Small animals were trapped monthly between July and November 1992 and examined for the presence of O. tsutsugamushi and ectoparasitic chiggers. A total of 40 Rattus rattus (L.) and 16 Tupaia glis (Diard) was trapped. O. tsutsugamushi was isolated from liver and spleen samples of 30.8% of R. rattus and 18.6% of T. glis. Antibodies to O. tsutsugamushi were detected in 95% of R rattus, and IgG antibodies persisted for up to 10 mo after removing rats from potential reinfe

A case of human trombiculosis caused by Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Trombiculidae) in Chamela, Jalisco, Mexico.

A case of trombiculosis is presented at the Estación de Biología Chamela in Jalisco, Mexico. This occurred during an expedition in search of parasites in the fall of 2024. One of the participants presented small red macules on her shins and ankles, and when these were observed with a portable magnifying glass, the presence of chiggers (Trombiculidae) was confirmed. The mites were identified as Eutrombicula alfreddugesi (Oudemans), which caused severe trombiculosis due to hypersensitivity in the affected person. In addition to the morphological diagnosis of the chiggers found, a clinical descri…

Not Only Leptotrombidium spp. an Annotated Checklist of Chigger Mites (Actinotrichida: Trombiculidae) Associated with Bacterial Pathogens.

Mites of the family Trombiculidae are known for playing a role in maintaining and spreading the scrub typhus etiologic agent, an intracellular Gram-negative bacterium, Orientia tsutsugamushi. Species of the genus Leptotrombidium are investigated most thoroughly, particularly in SE Asia, and a few are proven vectors for the pathogen. The mentioned association, however, is not the only one among trombiculids. Here, we present a list of chiggers indicated in the literature as positive for bacterial pathogens, tested throughout almost 100 years of research. Taxonomic identities of trombiculids fol…

A Checklist of Chigger Mites (Acari: Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhökiidae) From Taiwan, With Descriptions of Three New Species.

Scrub typhus is a lethal human disease transmitted by larval trombiculid mites (i.e., chiggers) that have been infected with the rickettsia Orientia tsutsugamushi. In total, 21 chigger species are known from Taiwan. We update the checklist of chiggers of Taiwan based on an intensive survey of shrew and rodent hosts in grasslands and agricultural fields in lowland Taiwan, coupled with surveys of forests in one mountainous site and an opportunistic examination of submitted host specimens. Three new species of chiggers, Gahrliepia (Gateria) lieni sp. n., Gahrliepia (Gateria) minuta sp. n., and Ga

Influence of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection on the developmental biology of Leptotrombidium imphalum and Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis (Acari: Trombiculidae).

Leptotrombidium chiangraiensis Tanskul & Linthicum, and Leptotrombidium imphalum Vercammen-Grandjean are important vectors of scrub typhus in rice field habitats in northern Thailand. The developmental biology of all stages of the life cycle of two generations of these species of mites infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi) and uninfected mites is reported. The development of the infected lines of both F1 and F2 L. chiangraiensis were significantly longer than their respective uninfected lines (P < 0.05). The developmental times of uninfected and infected F1 lines of L. imphalum were n

Mite vectors (Acari: Trombiculidae) of scrub typhus in a new endemic area in northern Kyoto, Japan.

Between 1983 and 1999, 27 human cases of scrub typhus (two fatal) occurred in the Nodagawa River basin of northern Kyoto, Japan, an area where no cases had been previously reported. Antibody screening of infected patients' sera showed that nine of 15 patients had high titers against the Gilliam type of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi). To determine the vector mite transmitting the disease, we studied rodent and chigger populations in and near a rice field alongside the Nodagawa River between 1996 and 1999. The most common rodent species was Microtus montebelli (Milne-Edwards), representing 73.
