The tuberculin test is widely used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in children as it is the only one that provides evidence of infection with M. tuberculosis. Of the tuberculins that are available, the most widely used are PPDS and PPDRT 23, in various strengths. Tuberculin skin test is still the only proven method for identifying infection wtih M. tuberculosis in persons who do not have active disease. Targeted tuberculin testing for latent tuberculosis infection is a strategic component of tuberculosis control in low prevalence countries. This report describes indication, technical method, interpretation of this test and guidelines when the tuberculin test is positive.

Transient suppression of already established tuberculin reactivity by a wide-spread, allergic contact dermatitis as well as by primary irritant contact dermatitis has been recently reported. Nine hundred thirty-three persons over 65 years of age, residing in long-term or extended-care facilities in Vancouver, Canada, had tuberculin tests. In addition to PPD-tuberculin, 5 TU and 250 TU, we used PPD-Battey, Candida albicans, mumps, and Trichophyton antigens.
