Tunga penetrans is a burrowing flea that is prevalent in Central and South America, the Caribbean, tropical Africa, India, and Pakistan, and rarely is imported to the United States. Tungiasis results from the cutaneous infestation of humans by the gravid female flea, T. penetrans. We report a case of tungiasis in a female who had been on a missionary expedition along the Brazilian Amazon River. The clinical presentation, life cycle, differential diagnosis, military and historical aspects, and treatment are discussed.

Tungiasis, an infestation by a burrowing flea, may cause multiple, painful lesions which, if they become secondarily infected, may eventuate in death. With increasing air travel to tropical areas, American physicians should recognize the lesion of this intracutaneous parasite. The fully developed lesion resembles an abscess with a black center. An infestation diagnosed in Memphis, Tennessee, is reported in a businessman who had returned from Brazil. Treatment consists of excision of the gravid female flea and careful cleaning of the cystic cavity. Healing is usually complete without sequelae. …

Tungiasis (sand flea disease) and myiasis are ectoparasitoses, in which the infectious agent resides temporarily in the skin (myiasis) or dies and is eventually eliminated (tungiasis). Both diseases are zoonoses. Whereas in myiasis humans are only an accidental host, in tungiasis the prevalence in humans is similar to that of their domestic animals. In travellers returning from the tropics tungiasis and myiasis are not rare, however they are frequently misdiagnosed. The diagnosis of both infestations is made clinically, and laboratory investigations are not helpful. In tungiasis the clinical p…

Tungiasis and myiasis are common ectoparasitic infestations that occur in developing countries in the tropics, particularly where poverty and poor standards of basic hygiene exist. The growth in international travel to and from these regions has led to an increase in the presentation of these conditions in nonendemic countries. Despite recent progress in the treatment and prevention of tungiasis and myiasis, diagnosis can present a challenge to those unfamiliar with these conditions, especially when they present in nonendemic countries. Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand…

Tungiasis is a cutaneous infestation by the female sand flea, Tunga penetrans. Because of the increase in international travel, the disease is reported in Europe, in spite of it being formerly restricted to the equatorial zones. This report describes a case of tungiasis and discusses clinical features, diagnosis and treatment.
