The aim of this study was to describe the role of mast cell chymase and tryptase in the progression of atherosclerosis. Forty-four sections of aortas were obtained from autopsies. We assessed the macroscopic degree of atherosclerosis, microscopic intensity of lipid deposition in the tunica intima, percentage of collagen in the tunica intima, and density of immunostained mast cells. Intimal sarcomas (IS) are rare, malignant, rapidly progressive mesenchymal tumors that typically occur in the tunica intima of larger vessels, and they rarely involve the heart. IS are frequently misdiagnosed during the initial clinical presentation. This case report describes an uncommonly located IS, highlighting specific findings obtained through multimodality imaging.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Increased carotid artery intima-media thickness is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease or cerebrovascular disease and is a powerful predictor of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes. Consequently, the measurement is now used in a number of case control, cohort and familial and linkage studies as an intermediate phenotype for the investigation of the genetic and environmental determinants of atherosclerosis. AIM: Cigarette smoking is a strong risk factor for atherosclerotic disease; however, it remains unclear whether the impact of other risk factors differs by smoking status. The aim of this study was to investigate this issue, especially with regard to low-density and high-density lipoprotein (LDL/HDL) levels.
METHODS: In total, 448 healthy, middle-aged men (aged 37 to 61) participated in this study. Smoking habits were recorded, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) was measured by B-mode ultrasound, and serum lipids and other biochemical parameters were determined from fasted blood samples.

The sudden death of a Cebus apella female (> 19 years old) on an experimental hyperlipidic diet during three years is described. The gross lesions were hemothorax, atherosclerotic plaques in the aortic curve, and an aneurysm in the ascending aorta. Histologically, an enlargement of the intima in the ascending aorta with hyalinization and a thrombus were observed. The media was thinned and showed sclerosis and hemorrhage extending to the tunica adventicia.
