Turner syndrome: results of the first Tunisian study group on Turner syndrome (TuSGOT).

OBJECTIVES: Early diagnosis in Turner syndrome is desirable to optimize growth and puberty and yet, it is often made late. Here, we aim to identify age at diagnosis, clinical features at presentation and potential strategies to improve the care of TS girls. METHODS: Retrospective study, including patients from 14 care centers across Tunisia including neonatal and pediatric care units, adult endocrinology and genetics departments. RESULTS: We identified 175 patients with TS, karyotype showing 45, xmonosomy in 83(47.4 %) with mosaicism in 37(20 %). Mean ± SD, median (range) age at diagnosis av…

Turner Syndrome: An Update.

Turner syndrome is the most common sex chromosome abnormality in women. Infertility and short stature are the most striking findings seen in these patients. Unfortunately, many girls are still being diagnosed too late and therefore early diagnosis and treatment key. Turner syndrome affects many systems of the body; therefore, a comprehensive approach is key for therapeutic intervention.

Turner Syndrome and Fertility.

Turner syndrome (TS) is tightly associated with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and ovarian dysgenesis, typically resulting in infertility in the great majority of patients. Therefore females with TS are usually treated with female sex steroids from 11-12years of age until the normal age of natural menopause of around 53-54years of age. Infertility is rated among females with TS as a distressing concern and a detractor from a good quality of life. Options for motherhood for females with TS has expanded during recent years. Originally, only adoption was an option, unless of course for the small …

Turner Syndrome and Craniopharyngioma.

Turner syndrome (TS) affects nearly 1 in 2000 live births (1) and craniopharyngioma, a benign brain tumor, has been reported to occur at an incidence of 1.3 per million (2). These rare disorders are not known to coexist. The authors report a patient with incidental suprasellar mass who was diagnosed with both craniopharyngioma and TS, a rare association.

Fertility in Turner syndrome.

There is increasing interest in fertility and use of assisted reproductive technologies for women with Turner syndrome (TS). Current parenting options include adoption, surrogacy, and spontaneous and assisted reproduction. For women with TS, specific risks of pregnancy include higher than usual rates of spontaneous abortion, foetal anomaly, maternal morbidity and mortality. Heterologous fertility assistance using oocytes from related or unrelated donors is an established technique for women with TS. Homologous fertility preservation includes cryopreservation of the patient's own gametes prior …

Autoimmunity and Turner's syndrome.

Turner Syndrome (TS) is a common genetic disorder, affecting female individuals, resulting from the partial or complete absence of one sex chromosome, and occurring in approximately 50 per 100,000 liveborn girls. TS is associated with reduced adult height and with gonadal dysgenesis, leading to insufficient circulating levels of female sex steroids and to infertility. Morbidity and mortality are increased in TS but average intellectual performance is within the normal range. TS is closely associated to the presence of autoantibodies and autoimmune diseases (AID), especially autoimmune thyroidi…

Keratoconus and Turner's syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report the association of keratoconus and Turner's syndrome in three patients and to review the ophthalmic manifestations of Turner's syndrome. METHODS: Three patients with keratoconus and Turner's syndrome were identified and reported in a retrospective review. RESULTS: These three cases represent the first series of patients with keratoconus and Turner's syndrome. All three patients underwent penetrating keratoplasty with good visual rehabilitation. None of the patients had other ocular features associated with Turner's syndrome. CONCLUSION: Turner's syndrome is commonly assoc

[Osteoporosis in Turner's syndrome].

Axial and appendicular osteoporosis are common features of Turner's syndrome. The histology of this osteoporosis is similar in some respects to postmenopausal osteoporosis. Therefore, we treated a woman with Turner's syndrome who developed a vertebral wedge fracture, despite estrogen substitution since adolescence, with bone stimulating drugs. Absence of a beneficial effect on bone biological indices or bone mineral density, could be explained by other pathogenetic factors like a direct result of the chromosomal abnormality or other hormonal deficiencies.

Ultrasonography of Turner's syndrome.

Pelvic sonographic studies were performed on 15 phenotypic females with Turner's syndrome and varying X chromosome abnormalities. In those individuals with the 45XO karyotype, the ovaries were not visible, consistent with the classic description of absent or fibrous streak ovaries. The patients who were chromosomal mosaics showed a range of findings from absent to infantile to normal adult-size ovaries. Turner's syndrome should be suggested in individuals with delayed onset of puberty, primary amenorrhea, and short stature in whom pelvic ultrasonography fails to reveal ovaries. On the other ha

[Fertility in Turner's syndrome].

A case of Turner's syndrome (45,X0/47,XXX) with two pregnancies is reported. aplasia of the right kidney and uterus bicornis were also found. The two children are well and psychomotor development was normal. Only 28 cases (6 of which were without known mosaic) have been described in which pregnancies were also reported. Abortion and stillbirth are frequent and the rate of malformation is high.

Pregnancy and the Turner syndrome.

A 21-year-old white female with short stature, cubitus valgus, multiple cutaneous nevi, and no other major features of the Turner syndrome is described. She had normal secondary sex development and menses. She recently completed a normal pregnancy with delivery of a normal male infant. Postpartum endocrine studies were normal. All cells examined from blood, skin, uterus, and both ovaries had a 45,X karyotype. She is the sixth reported monosomy X patient to achieve pregnancy. A literature review indicates increased fetal wastage (22 of 46 pregnancies) and increased chromosomal errors in the off…

Turner's syndrome in dermatology.

Turner's syndrome (TS) is a common genetic disorder of girls and women, for which the defining clinical triad is short stature, impaired sexual development, and infertility. Although classically known as monosomy X, genetic heterogeneity is frequent in TS, with mosaicism conferring a survival advantage. Several genetic loci have been implicated in TS including the short stature homeobox gene. TS effects many organs, with cutaneous stigmata providing critical clues for early detection of TS. The presence of lymphedema and its cutaneous sequelae are predictive of other systemic disorders, such a

Uveitis in Turner's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Turner's syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality where phenotypic females have either a missing X chromosome or a structural aberration of the X chromosome. Several ocular diseases have been associated with Turner's syndrome in the past, including one case only of proven iridocyclitis. METHODS: In this study we report the clinical findings of three females with Turner's syndrome and uveitis followed up for a mean period of 12.6 months. Two were observed in childhood or adolescence (10 and 16 years old). RESULTS: All the patients showed iridocyclitis, in one case complicated by the

Symbrachydactyly in Turner's syndrome.

In the report we describe the occurrence of symbrachydactyly of the right hand in an adult female with Turner syndrome and classical 45,X karyotype. Symbrachydactyly is a unilateral and sporadic hand malformation. The pathogenesis may be part of an arterial vascular disruption sequence, possibly secondary to fetal oedema which is an important and frequent symptom in the prenatal development of Turner syndrome foetusses.
