[Mooren's ulcer].

The article reviews available data on Mooren's ulcer - a rare disease of, supposedly, autoimmune origin that manifests as peripheral ulceration of the cornea and poses a risk of its perforation. The variability of clinical presentation and course of the disease often leads to misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. The present review focuses on specific signs characteristic of the disease and the most effective methods of its treatment.

[Venous ulcer].

Venous disorders causing a permanent increase in venous pressure are by far the most frequent reason for ulcers of the lower extremity. With a prevalence of 1 % in the general population rising to 4 % in the elderly over 80 and its chronic character, 1 % of healthcare budgets of the western world are spent on treatment of venous ulcers. A thorough investigation of the underlying venous disorder is the prerequisite for a differenciated therapy. This should comprise elimination of venous reflux as well as local wound management. Chronic ulcers can successfully be treated by shave therapy and spl…

Buruli ulcer.

Buruli ulcer is an indolent necrotizing disease of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and bone that is caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. Buruli ulcer is presently the third most common mycobacterial disease of humans, after tuberculosis and leprosy, and the least understood of the three. The disease remained largely ignored by many national public health programs, but more recently, it has been recognized as an emerging health problem, primarily due to its frequent disabling and stigmatizing complications. The contribution discusses various aspects of Buruli ulcer, including its geographic distrib…

[Peptic ulcer].

OBJECTIVE: To present a current review about pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of peptic ulcer disease in children, based on the reviewed publications and the author personal experience. METHODS: We revised the most relevant articles about peptic ulcer in children, published from the last 20 years. Peptic ulcer.

Indigestion and heartburn have been described for thousands of years, but it was only in the 16th century that the disease peptic ulcer was established by autopsy. At first, only gastric ulcers were identified. In the 18th century, duodenal ulcers, most of which were fatal cases after perforation or hemorrhage, were seen. In the 19th century, when autopsy became a common, even routine, hospital procedure, uncomplicated acute and chronic ulcers were found and then correlated with symptoms. Thus, our current clinical understanding dates from the 1820s, by which time peptic ulcers were being repo…

[Decubitus ulcer].

Bedsores are caused by prolonged pressure of soft tissues. Prevention is now better established. Better adapted mattresses should be used systematically. High fever and denutrition should be especially watched. Correct medical treatment has to provide faster cicatrisation if the pressure sore unfortunately occurs. Surgical treatment by muscular flaps has now really good results but costs a lot more in management of occasional or chronic bedridden patients.

[Esophageal ulcer].

Local esophageal ulcer was detected in 53 (0.56%) of 9493 patients who were examined endoscopically in view of different complaints of pains in the alimentary system. Ulcers detected in the patients were localized in the distal part of the esophagus in 52.83%, in its middle third in 35.85%, in its upper third in 11.31%. Macroscopically, ulcers were divided into focal (41.5%), squamous-infiltrative (32.2%) and deep (26.4%) types; their microscopic structure was investigated. In 56.7% they were combined with chronic gastritis. Squamous-infiltrative and deep types should be diagnostically differe…
