Distal ulna hook plate fixation for unstable distal ulna fracture associated with distal radius fracture.

The significance of distal ulna fractures is often undermined, which can result in inadequate treatment compared with fractures of the radius, the ulna's larger counterpart. However, little guidance exists in the current literature on how to manage distal ulna head or neck fractures and intra-articular ulna head fractures. Therefore, the purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the outcomes of distal ulna hook plate fixation for the treatment of an unstable distal ulna fracture associated with a distal radius fracture. Twenty-five patients with unstable distal ulna fractures who und…

Segmental radius and ulna fractures with scaphocapitate fractures and bilateral multiple epiphyseal fractures.

Segmental forearm fractures are rare in children, and management is controversial. Epiphyseal injuries further complicate matters. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who had segmental radius and ulna fractures with a coronal split of a metaphyseal fragment, along with bilateral epiphyseal fractures of the distal radius and ulna as well as ipsilateral scaphocapitate fractures with perilunate dislocation. There was also a contralateral fracture through the radial neck. The patient underwent immediate internal fixation of the forearm fractures and delayed fixation of the scaphocapitate fract…

[Fractures of the radius neck associated with ulna fractures in children].

The author has described one of the typical combinations of injuries in the elbow joint area in children, i.e. fractures of the neck of the radius with a simultaneous fracture of the ulna. The study is based on 37 cases observed by the author. Two types of the above-mentioned fractures have been distinguished: abduction (32) and extension (5) fractures. The methods of closed reposition of each type have been presented. These methods allow to reach the desired results even in major dislocations (60-90 degrees) of the head of the radius.

Stress fracture of the radius following a fracture of the ulna diaphysis.

A 70-year-old woman incurred a stress fracture of the radius following a fracture of the ulna. The patient had osteomalacia secondary to a Billroth II procedure. The primary reasons for the development of osteomalacia following a Billroth II procedure are: decreased transit time through the gut, which causes less Vitamin D and calcium absorption, and bypassing of the duodenum, where calcium absorption is highest. After treatment of the osteomalacia with calcium and Vitamin D, the fracture healed uneventfully. The present case report emphasizes the need to identify and treat diseases associated

Comminuted fractures of the proximal radius and ulna.

Forty-three comminuted fractures of the proximal radius and ulna in 34 patients were treated with operative stabilization using AO/ASIF techniques. The patients were divided into three groups, according to the type of injury: Group I, isolated comminuted fractures of the olecranon (18 patients); Group II, isolated fractures of the radial head (eight patients); Group III, combined olecranon and radial head fractures (eight patients). All fractures were followed until union. The average follow-up period was 18 months (range, 12-48 months). At the time of this review, the average limits of elbow

Intramedullary nailing for pathological fractures of the ulna.

Pathological lesions of long bones increase the morbidity of many common cancers. The orthopedic management of metastatic skeletal lesions can be challenging. The ultimate aim is to provide patients with a painless, functional limb. We present a report of two cases were a novel minimally invasive long bone nailing technique has been utilized to achieve skeletal stability and alleviation of symptoms.

Diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna in adults.

Diaphyseal fractures involving the radius and ulna, so called "both-bone" or "double-bone" forearm fractures are common orthopedic injuries. These injuries can result in significant loss of function if inadequately treated. As the upper extremity serves to position the hand in space, loss of forearm motion and/or muscle imbalance resulting from a poorly treated fracture can be particularly debilitating. Preservation of the anatomic relationships of the proximal and distal radioulnar joints as well as the interosseous space is critical to preserving function. This article overviews the manageme

Bracing of stable shaft fractures of the ulna.

In the laboratory an ulnar osteotomy was performed in 10 cadaveric specimens, which included 5 distal-third junctions and 5 middle-third junctions. The interosseous membrane was left intact. Each specimen was rotated through full pronation and full supination. Displacement less than half shaft width was considered stable. The interosseous membrane was subsequently released 2 cm proximal and 2 cm distal to the osteotomy. Repeated pronation and supination range of motion documented gross displacement greater than half of the width of the shaft and was diagnosed as unstable. To evaluate this hypo

Fracture through a geode in the proximal ulna.

Chronic joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis may mask that from other causes. Stress fractures, particularly in osteoporotic lower limb bones of such patients, are well described but can still cause diagnostic difficulty. These difficulties were highlighted by a case in which an unusual fracture occurred through a geode in the proximal ulna mimicking an exacerbation of synovitis in the elbow joint.

Distal Ulna Hook Locking Plate Fixation for Unstable Distal Ulna Fractures: A Prospective Clinical Study.

BACKGROUND: Distal ulna fractures, particularly when displaced or unstable, play a critical role in the stability and function of the distal radioulnar joint. Inadequate treatment may result in persistent pain, instability, and impaired wrist function. Recent advances in angular stable fixation have led to the development of anatomically contoured distal ulna hook locking plates; however, clinical data regarding their outcomes remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the radiological and functional outcomes of distal ulna fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation using a dista…

LCP distal ulna plate fixation of irreducible or unstable distal ulna fractures associated with distal radius fracture.

PURPOSE: The advent of locking compression plate (LCP) has provided convenient and secure fixation of distal ulna fractures. This study was performed to evaluate the functional and clinical outcomes following LCP distal ulna plate fixation of irreducible or unstable distal ulna fractures with concomitant distal radius fractures. METHODS: Retrospective review of 17 patients who had been treated with LCP distal ulna plates for distal ulna fractures was performed. The average age of the patients was 58.9 years (range 21-87 years), and the mean follow-up period was 15 months (range 12-20 months).…

[Incidence of distal ulna fractures associated with distal radius fractures: Treatment options].

Fractures of the neck and/or head of the ulna or distal ulna fracture (DUF) other than ulnar styloid fractures can occur in combination with distal radius fractures (DRF). This combination can have a significant influence on the treatment and prognosis since it causes the entire distal forearm to be unstable. In a series of 1279 consecutive unilateral DRFs, we found an associated ulnar neck fracture in 5.9% of cases, ulnar head and neck fracture in 1.6%, and isolated ulnar head fracture in 1.4%. Overall, 9% of cases in this study had a DUF with a DRF. The frequency of extra-articular "A" (11%)

Outcomes of Distal Ulna Fractures Associated With Operatively Treated Distal Radius Fractures.

Background: The purpose of this study was to report outcomes in patients with nonstyloid distal ulna fractures treated in conjunction with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures. Methods: A retrospective review of all patients who had undergone ORIF of a distal radius fracture over a 5-year period at a single institution was performed. Radiographic review was performed to identify patients with a concomitant fracture of the distal ulna. Radiographs were examined to determine whether and how the distal ulna fracture was stabilized and to assess healing of the distal …
