Echography is a quick and simple method for the diagnosis and monitoring of liver abscesses. It provides accurate information on the nature of the lesion and permits echo-guided percutaneous aspiration of the abscess, a manoeuvre presenting almost no risk of complications. The latter technique has proved a valid alternative to surgery since it permits the introduction of the drug employed into the abscess cavity and the consequent healing of bacterial and amoebic lesions in a very few days. Some personal results are presented.

The possibilities and the value of all methods which are applicable for a global diagnosis in neurological patients with vascular diseases are being compared in more than 1000 cases with operations of the carotid arteries. The necessity of an overall information for an optimal treatment is shown. But one can not renounce cerebral panangiography altogether.

Ultrasonic A scans of the thyroid have been carried out on 47 patients with suspected thyroid disease. It was possible to measure the antero-posterior diameter of each lobe and to identify whether the tissue was homogeneous, nodular or cystic. Measurement of individual nodules or cysts was accurate to within 5 mm when compared with the tissue removed at operation. Ultrasonic examination was able to differentiate other lumps, in the neck from those arising in the thyroid gland. Sonograms performed in 228 women admitted for acute pelvic infection has enabled to find a normal image in 39.9% of the cases. In order of frequency, the abnormalities include: endometrial alterations (31.1%), one (or several) pelvic masses (25.9%) and a collection in the Douglas cul-de-sac (22.8%).
