Sunlight contains a significant amount of ultraviolet (UV) ray, which leads to various effects on homeostasis in the body. Defense strategies to protect from UV rays have been extensively studied, as sunburn, photoaging, and photocarcinogenesis are caused by excessive UV exposure. The primary lines of defense against UV damage are melanin and trans-urocanic acid, which are distributed in the stratum corneum. UV rays that pass beyond these lines of defense can lead to oxidative damage. However, cells detect changes due to UV rays as early as possible and initiate cell signaling processes to pre

Acute and chronic exposures to non-physiological doses of UV-light lead to a variety of changes of the skin. The most significant of these changes are a premature aging of the skin, UV-induced hyperkeratosis or atrophy, provocation of skin diseases and neoplasms of the skin. Furthermore, the local and systemic immune response can be negatively modulated. As long as society views tanned skin as a sign of beauty and success, and provided no behavioral changes occur, it will be required to emphasize prevention through education and the use of external and internal sun protection products. It is p

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes many acute and chronic conditions such as oedema of the skin, sunburn, immunosuppression, photo-ageing and skin cancer. The use of antioxidants has become of paramount importance in prevention of the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), one of the main components of green tea, has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties.
AIM: The aim of this experimental study was to investigate to what extent EGCG prevented acute skin damage caused by UVA.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The

Carbon black (CB) particles that can absorb from near ultraviolet to infrared rays are well dispersed into an isotropic dielectric liquid and their optical properties can be kept even under exposure to sunlight over a long time. The shutter which controls the position of CB particles by electrophoretic force can be applied to switchable light shutters for windows in buildings and automobiles for the purpose of energy savings. Here, a wideband light shutter with three terminal electrodes is proposed, exhibiting excellent dark (transmittance ≈1.4%) and transparent state (transmittance >60%). The

Ultraviolet ray B (UV-B) induced dermatitis in the rat may be a model for human psoriasis vulgaris. Detailed studies of this model are reported. Rat skin responded to UV-B irradiation quite differently from human, guinea-pig, or mouse skin. Rat UV-B dermatitis was characterized by a sharply demarcated brownish-red lesion with scale formation lasting for 10 days. Histologically, microvascular dilatation, intraepidermal accumulation of polymorphonuclear leucocytes with microabscess, mononuclear cell infiltration at the papillary dermis and hyperproliferation of epidermal cells were observed. The

Comparative clinical and experimental investigations were carried out on 18 clinically normal horses. It was found that the single transfusion of in vitro UV-treated autogenous blood, following a previously described method, was tolerated well by horses and did not lead to any deviations from the normal indices. Under the effect of the treated blood there was an increase in the hemoglobin content, rise in the erythrocyte and leukocyte count with slightly expressed hyperleukocytosis and weak neutrophilia (simple regeneration of the blood). The sedimentation of erythrocytes also showed higher ra

BACKGROUND: It is known that the levels of hormones secreted from the pituitary gland are increased by ultraviolet B (UVB) eye irradiation. The ovaries are affected by the hormones secreted from the pituitary gland. Therefore, we observed the influence of UVB eye irradiation on the ovaries.
METHODS: In this study, a 2.5 kJ/m(2) dose of UVB irradiation was delivered by a sunlamp to the eye or the ear of C57BL/6j female mice. Five days after UVB irradiation, we removed the ovaries.
RESULTS: The plasma levels of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and β
