Vaginal microbiota of pregnant women with Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis infections.

BACKGROUND: The association between preterm birth and Mycoplasma species such as Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum has been extensively investigated. In a clinical setting, conventional diagnostic methods for them involve culture methods for Mycoplasma spp. and Ureaplasma spp., along with PCR tests. However, the clinical utility of these tests remains controversial, highlighting the necessity for more robust and reliable methods for identifying and understanding Mycoplasma infections. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the distribution of microbiota in pregnant women with Mycop

Detection of Ureaplasma biovars and polymerase chain reaction-based subtyping of Ureaplasma parvum in women with or without symptoms of genital infections.

Ureaplasma parvum colonises human mucosal surfaces, primarily in the urogenital and respiratory tracts, causing a wide spectrum of diseases, from non-gonococcal urethritis to pneumonitis in immunocompromised hosts. Although the basis for these diverse clinical outcomes is not yet understood, it has been suggested that only certain strains of these micro-organisms are disease-associated. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of Ureaplasma biovars and U. parvum serovars and to estimate their possible association with age, absence of lactobacilli, clinical symptoms and antibioti

Chorioamnionitis secondary to Ureaplasma parvum infection: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Ureaplasma species are the most frequently isolated microorganisms in cases of spontaneous preterm labor, premature rupture of the membranes, or chorioamnionitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman at 28+6 weeks of gestation with no apparent history of interest presented at the hospital with contractions. Upon suspicion of chorioamnionitis, the patient was admitted for a low segment transverse cesarean section, which was completed without any complications. The patient was discharged at 7 days. The newborn remained stable and showed no clinical signs of infection. However, on suspicion of

Lung pathology in premature infants with Ureaplasma urealyticum infection.

Respiratory tract colonization with Ureaplasma urealyticum in preterm infants has been associated with a higher incidence of pneumonia, severe respiratory failure, bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and death. In this report, we characterize the lung pathology and expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) associated with U. urealyticum pneumonia in very low-birth weight infants (VLBW; < or =1500 g). Lung pathology of archived autopsy specimens was retrospectively reviewed in three groups of VLBW infants: 5 gestational controls who died from nonpulmonary causes, 13 infants with pneum

Infection of the amniotic cavity with Ureaplasma urealyticum in the midtrimester of pregnancy.

The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical significance of invasion of the amniotic fluid (AF) with Ureaplasma urealyticum in the midtrimester of pregnancy. Amniotic fluid and cervical swabs obtained from 214 asymptomatic women in the midtrimester of pregnancy (16-20 weeks) were cultured for U urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis. Inoculum size was determined by quantitative culture. Six of the 214 women (2.8%) had Ureaplasma in high titers in the AF. The pregnancy outcomes of 129 women were determined. Adverse pregnancy outcome occurred more frequently in women with a positive AF c

Invasive Ureaplasma infection in a pediatric patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ureaplasma spp. are a rare cause of invasive disease outside of the neonatal period. Recent studies have shown that immunosuppression with B-cell depleting therapies, such as rituximab or obinutuzumab, can increase the risk of invasive infection. We present a case in which a patient receiving B-cell depleting therapy for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis and pauci-immune nephritis was diagnosed with disseminated, invasive Ureaplasma infection. CASE SUMMARY: A 17-year-old female with documented B-cell depletion presented to the emergency department from the

[Advances in clinical pharmacotherapy for neonatal Ureaplasma urealyticum infection].

Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is a common pathogen colonizing or infecting the neonatal respiratory tract. It can be vertically transmitted from mother to infant, irrespective of the duration of premature rupture of membranes and the mode of delivery. UU infection is an important factor contributing to preterm birth and low birth weight and is closely associated with adverse outcomes such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and neurodevelopmental impairment. Given the immaturity of neonatal immune and organ systems, pharmacologic treatment must balance efficacy and safety. Currently, no unified standa

Effects of Ureaplasma urealyticum infection on neonates: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is an opportunistic pathogen transmitted from mother to fetus, potentially causing neonatal diseases. Despite extensive research, its association with these diseases remains uncertain. This study analyzes the effects of UU infection on newborns. METHODS: We performed an exhaustive literature review by searching various databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane, for research articles published before March 2024 on the impact of UU infection on neonates and its association with related diseases. Keywords included "Ureaplasma urealyticum", "Pregnanc

Genital infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum and its effect on pregnancy.

Chorioamnionitis or intra-amniotic infection is an infection that affects the intrauterine content during pregnancy. Numerous studies have reported vaginal colonization with various types of infectious agents as a risk factor for chorioamnionitis. Although this complication occurs due to the ascending polymicrobial bacterial infection at the time of membrane breakage, it may also occur in pregnant women with intact membranes, mainly due to Ureaplasma urealyticum (U. urealyticum) and Mycoplasma hominis (M. hominis). The main aim of the present study was to identify a region-specific panel of in

Ureaplasma parvum prosthetic joint infection detected by PCR.

We describe the first reported case of Ureaplasma parvum prosthetic joint infection (PJI) detected by PCR. Ureaplasma species do not possess a cell wall and are usually associated with colonization and infection of mucosal surfaces (not prosthetic material). U. parvum is a relatively new species name for certain serovars of Ureaplasma urealyticum, and PCR is useful for species determination. Our patient presented with late infection of his right total knee arthroplasty. Intraoperative fluid and tissue cultures and pre- and postoperative synovial fluid cultures were all negative. To discern the

Ureaplasma urealyticum infection in newborns: three case reports.

We report three newborns with different manifestations of Ureaplasma urealyticum infection; a term newborn with acute neonatal pneumonia and two very low birth weight infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and osteomyelitis of the femur, respectively. The association of U. urealyticum with acute and chronic respiratory disease in term and preterm newborns has recently been reported. Our two cases are similar to other case reports from the literature, but we were unable to find any previous reports of osteomyelitis due to U. urealyticum in the premature babies. Isolation of U. urealyticum in p

Haematuria associated with ureaplasma infection in sickle-cell trait.

Phase-contrast microscopy of the urine of a young Greek woman with macroscopic haematuria showed sickling of the red blood cells. The diagnosis of sickle-cell trait was confirmed with haemoglobin electrophoresis, and an intravenous pyelogram demonstrated the typical medullary cavities seen in this disease. Urine collected from the left ureter, from which the haematuria originated, grew 10(6) Ureaplasma urealyticum/ml. With Doxycycline therapy the macroscopic haematuria and the sickled cells in the urine resolved, but red cell casts and an excessive number of glomerular red blood cells persiste

Ureaplasma parvum and Ureaplasma urealyticum detected with the same frequency among women with and without symptoms of urogenital tract infection.

There is mounting evidence stating that Ureaplasma urealyticum causes non-gonococcal urethritis in males, whereas Ureaplasma parvum does not seem to be of clinical significance. However, the clinical role of U. parvum and U. urealyticum in lower urogenital tract infections in females remains unclear. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of U. parvum and U. urealyticum among 145 Ureaplasma spp. culture-positive women with symptoms of lower urogenital tract infection (n = 75) and those without (n = 70), and to determine possible associations between the detection of U. parvum and

Prevalence of genital mycoplasma & ureaplasma infections in pregnancy & their effect on pregnancy outcome.

A cohort of 200 women with singleton pregnancies attending the antenatal clinic, were studied to determine the prevalence of genital mycoplasma and ureaplasma infections in pregnant women and the effect of infection on pregnancy outcome. Vaginal and endocervical swabs were taken at 26-30 wk and again at 36-38 wk of pregnancy and cultured for mycoplasma and ureaplasma. Forty (20%, 95% CI 14.5-25.6%) women were found to be infected with arginine metabolising mycoplasmas and 79 (39.5%, 95% CI 32.7-46.3%) with ureaplasma at either site or either time.
