A 42-year-old sexually active man with HIV on ART (antiretroviral therapy) who has a history of syphilis presented with fever and severe sore throat for which he could not eat or drink. Upper airway compromise may be the result of numerous factors, among which a swollen uvula should be considered in the differential diagnosis. We present a case of a 21-year-old man who presented with complaints of throat discomfort, altered voice, and tachypnea secondary to acute uvular edema. The patient was treated with sympathomimetic drugs both by injection and by inhalation with complete resolution of the swelling and his symptoms within 30 minutes. The uvula is a potential cause of upper airway obstruction and should be examined in persons presenting with airway-related complaints.

From a study of the clinical courses of nine patients with squamous carcinoma of the uvula and a review of the clinical literature involving such lesions, we have concluded that these tumors have a very poor prognosis when metastases occur, despite seemingly adequate initial therapy to the primary tumor. Consequently, we believe that more aggressive treatment (which may include irradiation of even subclinically involved neck nodes) should be considered.

The morphology of the musculus uvulae was studied utilizing detailed gross anatomical dissection and histological sectioning of the soft palate in seven adult human cadavers. The results indicated that the musculus uvulae is paired as previously described in most anatomy texts.
