A preliminary trial was conducted, using yoghurt to assess its potential for the management of vaginal discharge. The results were encouraging in non-specific vaginal discharge and warrant further investigation. The treatment was ineffective in reducing Trichomonas vaginalis infestation, and in this condition no further investigation is warranted.

BACKGROUND: Almost 50% of women who have had rectal surgery subsequently develop vaginal discharge. Due to the recurrent and unexpected nature of this heavy discharge, they often experience it as very distressing. Many of these women undergo extensive diagnostic tests that are mainly focused on identifying fistula formation. If no fistula is found, in most cases no other cause for severe vaginal discharge can be demonstrated.

Vaginal discharge is a common complaint, the cause of which can be diagnosed on the basis of the distinguishing characteristics of the fluid itself, the course and symptoms of the infection, and the results of a few simple office laboratory tests. Accurate diagnosis is important because treatment can then be selected specifically rather than empirically. Optimal treatment differs with each of the four major causative agents: Candida, Gardnerella, Trichomonas, and Chlamydia. Prompt eradication of the infection promotes patient and public health.

It has supporting medical information for all recommendations that is literature- and experience-based. A patient aftercare instruction sheet is appended. An abbreviated "pocket practice guideline" is also provided. This format is clearly appropriate only for simple, not complex, clinical encounters.
