BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate general and condition-specific quality of life in esophageal atresia (EA) patients, identifying risk factors such as associated anomalies and chronic diseases, as well as examining their impact on life quality.

Varicocele is a dilatation of the veins of the pampiniform plexus caused by reflux within the spermatic venous system. In the majority of cases it becomes apparent during pubertal development. The etiology of varicocele is likely multifactorial. A testicular varicocele represents an abnormal degree of venous dilatation of the pampiniform plexus. It is a relatively common condition and may present at scrotal pain and swelling. An association with male subfertility is an area of debate. This article describes the present day radiological criteria and imaging techniques to aid accurate diagnosis of varicoceles. In addition, the role of the interventional radiologist in treating this condition is discussed.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of height and weight on the incidence of varicocele in schoolboys aged 5-16 years and the impact of varicocele on testicular size. There is good evidence of an associated abnormality in testicular hormone production and spermatogenesis in some men with varicoceles. This abnormality can be demonstrated with dynamic tests of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and by measuring seminal plasma androgen levels. Thirty boys 8 to 18 years of age seen in a general urologic practice with emphasis on pediatrics had palpable varicoceles. A concomitant finding was that 77 percent of these patients had a smaller testis on the left side. Because the small testis is present before maturity, its size appears due to arrest of testicular growth rather than to atrophy. Surgical correction is advisable when the varicocele is pronounced, the involved testis is distinctly smaller or there is scrotal pain.
