Hand and forearm dermatoses among veterinarians.

BACKGROUND: Infectious and non-infectious hand and forearm dermatoses are frequent in daily veterinary medicine. In this specific occupation there is a serious impact of skin disease on the lives and careers of veterinarians. OBJECTIVE: In this study we clarify the different occupational dermatoses on hands and forearms among veterinarians, using data collected in different dermatological patch-test expert centres in Belgium and the Netherlands. METHODS: Instead of questioning veterinarians themselves, which has been done in different studies in the past, we contacted dermatologists in Belgi…

Hand dermatitis among veterinarians from Queensland, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Although hand dermatitis (HD) represents a frequent occupational issue for many health professionals, little is known about the prevalence and distribution of HD among veterinarians, particularly in Australia. AIM: We utilized a previously validated questionnaire survey to examine a cross-section of veterinarians from Queensland, Australia, to determine the prevalence of HD and its associated factors. METHOD: We conducted a questionnaire-based survey of HD, which was mailed to 1094 veterinarians registered with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland during 2006 (64.0% respon…

Hepatitis E Virus Antibodies in Finnish Veterinarians.

We investigated hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections in Finnish veterinarians engaged in different practice specialties and evaluated the effect of different background factors on HEV exposure by examining total HEV antibodies in samples collected from the participants of the 2009 National Veterinary Congress in Helsinki, Finland. Finnish veterinarians commonly have total HEV antibodies with seroprevalence of 10.2%. Of the non-veterinarians, 5.8% were seropositive. Increasing age was associated with HEV seropositivity, and, surprisingly, the highest HEV seroprevalence (17.8%) among veterinarians…

Injuries to Australian veterinarians working with horses.

Data from a health risks of Australian veterinarians (HRAV) study were reviewed to identify reported serious injuries incurred while working with horses and the factors associated with these injuries. Of the 2188 serious injuries reported in the HRAV study, 1583 (72.3 per cent) were associated with animals, and of these, 453 (28.6 per cent) involved horses. Most of them were sustained in stock or handling yards. Factors associated with an increased frequency of injury included activities such as suturing, wound care, tubing and drenching. The parts of the body most commonly injured were the he…

Veterinarians' attitudes towards the treatment and surgical management of brachycephalic dogs - a survey among small animal veterinarians in Austria.

BACKGROUND: The rising popularity of flat-faced dog breeds has intensified discussions around brachycephaly and its associated health risks. The structural shortening of the skull coupled with a lack of a concurrent reduction in the volume of the soft tissues in these breeds often results in chronic health issues, notably Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which remains incurable but may be alleviated through corrective surgical interventions. In light of these challenges, veterinarians are increasingly called upon to provide informed guidance and support to pet owners navigati…

Accidental Mycobacterium bovis infection in a veterinarian.

CASE: A veterinarian developed tenosynovitis and secondary carpal tunnel syndrome following accidental inoculation of Mycobacterium bovis during the necropsy of a tuberculous possum from Westland, New Zealand. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: M. bovis infection is a zoonotic disease, and occupational exposure to tuberculous animals places people at risk of contracting the disease. CONCLUSIONS: Adhering to safe work practices reviewed in this article is important to minimise the risk of infection to people handling tuberculous animals.

[Bioterrorism: the role of veterinarians in detection and prevention].

The fear of terrorist attacks has increased since the events of 11 September 2001 in New York. In the weeks following the terrorist attack, … f society and daily life, can be achieved in three ways, ways which are of importance to practising veterinarians, namely, via pets, via contamination of pet foods of animal origin, and by the spread of infectious animal diseases that have far-reaching economic consequences.
