Suppression of mouse killing and apomorphine-induced social aggression in rats by local anesthesia of the mystacial vibrissae.

Local anesthesia of the facial epidermis can effect a substantial decrease in shock-elicited fighting of paired rats. The present experiments constitute methodological extensions to mouse killing and spontaneous drug-induced social aggression. In the first experiment, known mouse-killing rats were given bilateral lidocaine or placebo injections administered under ether anesthesia. Attack and kill latencies were significantly longer under lidocaine than under placebo; all subjects killed under placebo, whereas a third of all subjects failed to kill on the initial lidocaine test. On subsequent l

Alteration of the nucleus basalis of Meynert afferents to vibrissae-related sensory cortex in de-whiskered adolescent congenital hypothyroid rats.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid hypofunction during early development results in anatomical alterations in the cerebellum, cerebrum, hippocampus and other brain structures. The plastic organization of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (nBM) projections to the whiskers-related somatosensory (wS1) cortex in adolescent pups with maternal thyroid hypofunction and sensory deprivation was assessed through retrograde WGA-HRP labeling. METHODS: Congenital hypothyroidism induced by adding PTU (25 ppm) to the drinking water from embryonic day 16 to postnatal day (PND) 60. Pregnant rats were divided to intact and co

Taxonomic and life cycle reappraisals of the marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa complex, with descriptions of three new Nia species.

The marine basidiomycete Nia vibrissa has been regarded as a species complex, possibly including several species, because morphological variations in fruitbody, spore, and spore appendage have been observed in materials from worldwide collections. Using more than 50 monosporic isolates of N. vibrissa-like fungi mainly obtained from Japanese beach coasts, we investigated their molecular phylogeny, morphological characteristics, mating compatibility, nuclear behavior during spore formation, and life cycles. Molecular phylogenetic analyses separated the examined strains into seven clades. Each cl

Notch signaling in the embryonic ectoderm promotes periderm cell fate and represses mineralization of vibrissa hair follicles.

The Notch signaling pathway is a critical means to regulate cell fate choice in animals. Appropriate regulation of this pathway is also required for human face formation as both loss and gain of function mutations of Notch signaling can cause syndromes with craniofacial abnormalities. Here we examine the consequences of manipulation of Notch signaling in the early mouse embryonic ectoderm by either removing the transcriptional effector Rbpj or expressing a constitutively active form of the Notch1 intracellular domain. Loss of Rbpj resulted in cleft secondary palate but strikingly was also asso

Transplantation of olfactory mucosa minimizes axonal branching and promotes the recovery of vibrissae motor performance after facial nerve repair in rats.

The occurrence of abnormally associated movements is inevitable after facial nerve transection. The reason for this post-paralytic syndrome is poor guidance of regrowing axons, whereby a given muscle group is reinnervated by misrouted axonal branches. Olfactory ensheathing glia have been shown to reduce axonal sprouting and stimulate axonal regeneration after transplantation into the spinal cord. In the present study, we asked whether transplantation of olfactory mucosa (OM) would also reduce sprouting of a damaged peripheral pure motor nerve. The adult facial nerve was transected, and the eff

The pattern of thalamocortical and brain stem projections to the vibrissae-related sensory and motor cortices in de-whiskered congenital hypothyroid rats.

The present study is designed to investigate the plastic organization of the thalamo-cortical (TC) and brain stem afferents of whisker primary sensory (wS1) and motor (wM1) cortical areas in congenital hypothyroid (CH) pups following whisker deprivation (WD) from neonatal to adolescence period. Maternal hypothyroidism was induced by adding propylthiouracil (PTU) to the drinking water from early embryonic day 16 to postnatal day (PND) 60. Pregnant rats were divided into intact and CH groups (n = 8). In each group, the total whiskers of pups (4 of 8) were trimmed continuously from PND 1 to PND 6

Neonatal damage to the rat's infraorbital nerve upregulates both galanin and neuropeptide Y in individual vibrissae-related primary afferent axons.

Previous studies in adult animals have suggested that the peptides galanin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) may be upregulated in the same primary afferent neurons after peripheral axotomy. The present study was undertaken to determine whether such upregulation occurred in vibrissae-related primary afferent neurons and their axons after damage to the infraorbital nerve [ION; the trigeminal (V) branch that innervates the vibrissae follicles]. Double-labelling experiments demonstrated that approximately 75% of axotomized V ganglion cells and the central arbors of vibrissae-related primary afferents expr…

Apomorphine reverses direction of asymmetry in facial scanning after 10 days of unilateral vibrissae removal in rat: vibrissotomy-induced denervation supersensitivity?

Sensorimotor asymmetries of hemivibrissotomized rats were investigated in an open field. To examine possible behavioral plasticity after unilateral removal of the vibrissae, we compared two groups of rats which had experienced the sensory imbalance for different durations. One group was shaved on one side of the face daily for 10 days before behavioral testing (group 10-Days). The other group was first shaved 4 h prior to the behavioral testing and was sham-shaved for the preceding 10 days (group 4-H). On day 11, the undrugged behavior was examined, and then, one hour later, the behavior induc…

BDNF and trkB mRNA expression in neurons of the neonatal mouse barrel field cortex: normal development and plasticity after cauterizing facial vibrissae.

Development of the central somatosensory system is profoundly modulated by the sensory periphery. Cauterization of facial whiskers alters th … rophic factor (BDNF) mRNA and both catalytic and non-catalytic forms of trkB mRNA. Cautery of row C vibrissae on the right side of the face within 24 h after birth (post natal day 0, PND0) reduced the expression of BDNF and trkB mRNA from the division region between the contralateral row C barrels at PND7. The vibrissae in row A, C, and E were cauterized at …

Lasting facilitatory effects of neonatal vibrissae removal on the propagation of cortical spreading depression: an electrophysiological study in well-nourished and early-malnourished adult rats.

Early malnutrition interferes with the formation of somatosensory pathways and reduced sensory input activity during brain development can induce morphological and physiological changes in the cerebral cortex, altering their response properties in the long-term. Here, we investigated cortical spreading depression (CSD) propagation in male adult rats submitted to unilateral vibrissae removal, at postnatal days 2-3, and malnourished during lactation followed by nutritional recovery until adulthood (90-120 days), when CSD was recorded. Compared to nutrition-matched non-lesioned controls, CSD-prop…

Changes in the axon terminals of primary afferents from a single vibrissa in the rat trigeminal nuclei after active touch deprivation or exposure to an enriched environment.

Lasting modifications of sensory input induce structural and functional changes in the brain, but the involvement of primary sensory neurons in this plasticity has been practically ignored. Here, we examine qualitatively and quantitatively the central axonal terminations of a population of trigeminal ganglion neurons, whose peripheral axons innervate a single mystacial vibrissa. Vibrissa follicles are heavily innervated by myelinated and unmyelinated fibers that exit the follicle mainly through a single deep vibrissal nerve. We made intraneural injections of a mixture of cholera-toxin B (CTB)

Differential fasciculation of follicular nerves for transferring specifically localized cues of the vibrissa rudiments to the central trigeminal sensory system in mice, as exploited with DiI and DiA labeling.

Vibrissa connections play a decisive role in setting the somatotopic coordinates in the trigeminal sensory system. Although previous studies have examined the development of peripheral patterning, certain questions are still in dispute, for example, the way vibrissa connections are structured, and the relationship between periphery and central organization, and ganglion cell organization. In order to fill the blanks left by previous studies, the extension of ganglionic branches and the formation of vibrissa connections were reexamined by using fluorescent carbocyanin dyes, DiI and DiA, during

Germanium-doped calcium phosphate ceramics in combination with mesenchymal stem cells derived from the neural crest, obtained from rabbit vibrissae: an experimental model of rabbit jaw regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Jaw bone regeneration remains a clinical challenge in maxillofacial surgery. Bioactive ceramics and neural crest-derived multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (NC-MSCs) show regenerative potential, but their combined effect in repairing jaw defects has not been fully investigated. To our knowledge, no previous studies have evaluated germanium-doped biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics combined with NC-MSCs from vibrissae in a critical-size mandibular defect model. This study aimed to evaluate biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics doped with 1% germanium (BCPdGe 1%) alone versus BCPdGe 1%…

Changes in motor representation related to facial nerve damage and regeneration in adult rats.

The present study examined how facial nerve regeneration shapes movement representation patterns in previously disconnected motor cortices. Electrical microstimulation was used to bilaterally map the motor cortices of adult rats subjected to unilateral facial nerve lesion and reanastomosis stamps at the stylomastoid foramen level. The motor cortex output patterns of two groups of experimental hemispheres (contralateral to lesioned side) were compared before and after facial nerve reinnervation. The motor cortex output patterns in the control hemispheres (ipsilateral to the lesioned side) were

Quantification of the calcification phenotype of Abcc6-deficient mice with microcomputed tomography.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum in humans and dystrophic cardiac calcification in mice are heritable disorders characterized by dystrophic calcification of soft connective tissues related to the defective function of the ABCC6 (human)/Abcc6 (mouse) transporter. Of particular interest is the finding of calcified vibrissae in Abcc6(-/-) mice, which facilitates the study of dystrophic calcification by histological techniques. We aimed to determine whether mice prone to dystrophic cardiac calcification (C3H/HeOuJ and DBA/2J strains) presented similar vibrissae changes and to evaluate the value of microco…

The canine vibrissal system as a highly innervated and functional sensory organ.

Little is known about the importance of the vibrissae in domestic dogs and no studies have been published to date. The shaving of the vibrissae is still common in dogs, particularly in preparation for dog shows. In this publication, we show how dogs use their vibrissae with 17 video clips from 11 individuals. We also performed histological, transmission electron microscopic and immunohistochemical analyses to characterise the histomorphology of canine follicle-sinus complex (FSC). Tissue samples were taken from six dog carcasses. The videos show that dogs respond to mechanical stimulation of t…

Testing forelimb placing "across the midline" reveals distinct, lesion-dependent patterns of recovery in rats.

We describe a new test of vibrissae-elicited forelimb placing ability that allows testing of sensorimotor integration across the midline. Rats were given unilateral brain lesions using one of three methods: (1) middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) causing significant damage to the cortex and striatum, (2) aspiration lesions to remove tissue from the sensorimotor cortex, and (3) infusions of the catecholamine neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the medial forebrain bundle, producing a parkinsonian syndrome. Application of the new test to these animals revealed that with some lesion ty…
