BACKGROUND: Theobromine, a methylxanthine related to caffeine and present in high levels in cocoa, may contribute to the appeal of chocolate. However, current evidence for this is limited.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a within-subjects placebo-controlled study of a wide range of oral theobromine doses (250, 500, and 1,000 mg) using an active control dose of caffeine (200 mg) in 80 healthy participants.

A feasibility study on the vibratory perception threshold (VPT) in normal volunteers was conducted to detect anti-cancer drug induced peripheral neuropathy. The VPT was found to increase with age. The mean VPT in the main hand in 25 normal volunteers was significantly higher than in the other hand. No variation of VPT was observed in one day or one week. BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that some of the behavioral effects of alcohol may be mediated through actions on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Mecamylamine, a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, reduces alcohol preference and consumption in alcohol-preferring rats, and in humans, mecamylamine dampens some of the subjective, or mood-altering, effects of alcohol.
