State of vulnerable populations in the techquity framework in Hungary.

Digital health solutions could alleviate the needs of vulnerable populations in the recent period of the permacrisis, however, there are several barriers that limit their use for certain individuals. We use the four-pillar model of the novel concept of techquity to provide original evidence of the discrepancy in the willingness to try and the ability to harness healthtech in Hungary. We identified three underserved segments of society: older adults, people with long-term activity-limiting conditions, and people experiencing homelessness who could greatly benefit from digital technologies and y…

Special considerations for evaluating psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy in vulnerable populations.

Psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy shows potential transdiagnostic efficacy for a range of mental health conditions. Though vulnerable populations bear disproportionate mental health burden, they have been largely neglected in the clinical psilocybin literature. However, if the field is to best respond to the diverse needs of individuals from vulnerable populations, care must be taken to ensure these individuals are represented in the empirical research. This report calls attention to this concern by detailing the challenges and opportunities associated with evaluating psilocybin-facilitated…

Clinical and Ethical Challenges in Undertaking LIMPRINT in Vulnerable Populations.

Background and Study Objective: To estimate the prevalence of chronic edema (CO) and wounds within two vulnerable populations, a male high security prison in the East Midlands (United Kingdom) and residential and nursing homes in the United Kingdom and Australia. Methods and Results: Methods for screening for CO and wounds were adapted from the main LIMPRINT methodology. Prison Population: In total, 195 inmates were recruited with 22 (11%) having CO. While the majority were white Caucasian (156/83.4%) a further 20 (10.7%) were dark skinned with 11 (5.95%) from other minority populations. Comor…

Value of Comprehensive HCV Treatment among Vulnerable, High-Risk Populations.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to explore the trade-offs society and payers make when expanding treatment access to patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in early stages of disease as well as to vulnerable, high-risk populations, such as people who inject drugs (PWID) and HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM-HIV). METHODS: A discrete time Markov model simulated HCV progression and treatment over 20 years. Population cohorts were defined by behaviors that influence the risk of HCV exposure: PWID, MSM-HIV, an overlap cohort of individuals who are both PWID

[Vitamin C measurements in vulnerable populations: 4 cases of scurvy].

Hypovitaminose C, at the origin of the scurvy, did not disappear. We report 4 cases of desocialized patients and whose very unbalanced diet was at the origin of the vitamin deficit. In addition to the hemorrhagic demonstrations described among 4 patients, one finds a modification of the superficial body growths. Physiologically, the vitamin C takes part in the stability of the collagen of the vascular wall and the bone. The biological assessment of the 4 patients was normal apart from the low ascorbemy, a syndrome of denutrition and anaemia related to the haemorrhage. The quality of the vitami

Looped Penrose Drainages of Acute Hand Infections in Vulnerable Populations.

PURPOSE: Acute hand infections (AHIs) remain a challenge for hand surgeons and represent a condition for which clinical outcomes are considerably affected by social barriers. We previously described the looped Penrose drainage technique, where a drain is sutured to itself in a loop and the outflow tract of egress is maintained, thus obviating the need for large incisions, wound closure, or repeat packing, thereby reducing the follow-up burden. In the face of escalating numbers of socioeconomically vulnerable patients, especially in urban settings, we aimed to characterize the clinical features

Two Nursing Outreach Interventions to Engage Vulnerable Populations in Care.

People experiencing substance use disorders, homelessness, mental health conditions, or poverty often have difficultly engaging in healthcare services particularly prevention services. This brief report describes two nursing interventions implemented by nursing students that aim to empower vulnerable populations and draw them into care using empathetic and patient-centered approaches. The first intervention uses street outreach with naloxone training in an area of Baltimore experiencing a high rate of overdose deaths. The second uses home or street outreach to link people living with HIV to HI…

A review of tobacco regulatory science research on vulnerable populations.

In 2013 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health established fourteen Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS) to advance scientific knowledge relevant to conducting evidence-based tobacco regulation. This report reviews TCORS-funded research with adult vulnerable populations. The literature search included a list of all TCORS-funded publications compiled by the TCORS coordinating center; all TCORS were requested to share publications not in the coordinating-center's list. Only TCORS-funded reports describing an empirical study with an adult vulnerable popul…

Involving vulnerable populations of youth in HIV prevention clinical research.

Adolescents continue to be at high risk for HIV infection, with young men who have sex with men and youth with drug abuse and/or mental health problems at particularly high risk. Multiple factors may interact to confer risk for these youth. Engaging vulnerable youth in HIV prevention research can present unique challenges in the areas of enrollment, retention, and trial adherence. Examples of successful engagement with vulnerable youth offer encouraging evidence for the feasibility of including these youth in clinical trials. Ethical challenges must be taken into consideration before embarking

A Novel Method for Generating Spatially Resolved Synthetic Populations for Health Impact Assessments in Vulnerable Populations.

The spatial resolution of environmental exposure and sociodemographic population data is often mismatched given limited publicly available population data that complies with privacy requirements for individuals. To address this limitation, we developed a novel matching algorithm to construct a synthetic population at the address-level. To demonstrate how our approach can improve environmental justice (EJ) analyses and health impact assessments (HIAs), we examined sociodemographic patterns of residential proximity to major roadways in Greater Boston (Massachusetts) and HIA results, comparing ou

Mental and social wellbeing trajectory during the pandemic for vulnerable populations.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated changes over time in mental and social wellbeing indicators for vulnerable population subgroups during the pandemic. These groups were younger people, people with disabilities, low-income groups, unemployed, culturally, and linguistically diverse communities (CaLD), and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. METHODS: A series of four repeated population representative surveys were conducted in June 2020, September 2020, January 2022, and June 2022. Questions included items on psychological distress, financial hardship, social connection, and life satisfacti

Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Disease: A Focus on Vulnerable Populations Worldwide.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Certain subgroups defined by sociodemographics (race/ethnicity, age, sex and socioeconomic status [SES]), geographic location (rural vs. urban), comorbid conditions and country economic conditions (developed vs. developing) may disproportionately suffer the adverse cardiovascular effects of exposure to ambient air pollution. Yet, previous reviews have had a broad focus on the general population without consideration of these potentially vulnerable populations. RECENT FINDINGS: Over the past decade, a wealth of epidemiologic studies have linked air pollutants including parti…

Satellite-Derived, Smartphone-Delivered Geospatial Cholera Risk Information for Vulnerable Populations.

Cholera, an acute waterborne diarrheal disease, remains a major global health challenge. Despite being curable and preventable, it can be fatal if left untreated, especially for children. Bangladesh, a cholera-endemic country with a high disease burden, experiences two peaks annually, during the dry pre-monsoon spring and the wet post-monsoon fall seasons. An early warning system for disseminating cholera risk, which has potential to reduce the disease burden, currently does not exist in Bangladesh. Such systems can raise timely awareness and allow households in rural, riverine areas like Matl

Availability of Advanced Breast Imaging at Screening Facilities Serving Vulnerable Populations.

OBJECTIVE: Among vulnerable women, unequal access to advanced breast imaging modalities beyond screening mammography may lead to delays in cancer diagnosis and unfavourable outcomes. We aimed to compare on-site availability of advanced breast imaging services (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], and image-guided biopsy) between imaging facilities serving vulnerable patient populations and those serving non-vulnerable populations. SETTING: 73 imaging facilities across five Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium regional registries in the United States during 2011 and 2012. METHODS: W…

Teaching about vulnerable populations: nursing students' experience in a homeless center.

Cultural competence is not limited to ethnicity, religion, or race but is inclusive of vulnerable groups, such as the homeless. The complex health and social issues related to homelessness requires educational instruction that supports students' ability to address and care for the multidimensional elements that surround this group. Exposure to homeless populations provides nursing students with increased awareness of the issues related to health disparities, while promoting introspective reflection on one's values and beliefs. To increase student exposure to working with homeless clients, a se

The homeless as a vulnerable population.

The homeless population is a social group that is vulnerable because the homeless are at an increased risk for adverse health-related outcomes. Understanding the nature of homelessness and the relationship between resource availability, relative risks, and health status is critical for nurses to diagnose and treat health-related problems in this vulnerable population. This article discusses the homeless as a vulnerable population by using the health-related problems of vulnerable population's model as a theoretical framework. Specific primary, secondary, and tertiary nursing interventions usef

Profiling hydrophobic organic pollutants in serum from vulnerable populations in Dalian, China.

Human are exposed to synthetic chemical mixtures via multiple pathways, causing potential health risks especially for vulnerable populations. Biomonitoring studies are vital to understand the health outcomes of chemical mixtures. Yet, most existing research focused only on specific chemicals and seldom compared different vulnerable populations. Herein, we developed a high-coverage approach for comprehensive analysis of 986 hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOPs) in human serum via a GC-Orbitrap-MS. Then, we investigated the HOPs in serum from pregnant women, older adults, and children, and 204, …
