Nordic walking increases circulating VEGF more than traditional walking training in postmenopause.

OBJECTIVES: Nordic walking (NW) is widely practiced by postmenopausal women. Its effects are peculiar owing to the involvement of more muscle groups than in traditional walking training (WT). Since mechanical load promotes secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from both skeletal muscle and muscle endothelium, the aim of the study was to compare the effect of NW and WT on VEGF levels. METHOD: Thirty postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to NW or WT. Both groups trained 40-50 min/day, three times per week, at a mean intensity of 12 on a 15-category scale of the ratings of…

Does long-distance walking improve or deteriorate walking stability of transtibial amputees?

BACKGROUND: Falls are common in transtibial amputees which are linked to their poor stability. While amputees are encouraged to walk more, they are more vulnerable to fatigue which leads to even poorer walking stability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the dynamic stability of amputees after long-distance walking. METHODS: Six male unilateral transtibial amputees (age: 53 (SD: 8.8); height: 170cm (SD: 3.4); weight: 75kg (SD: 4.7)) performed two sessions (30minutes each) of treadmill walking, separated by a short period of gait tests. Gait tests were performed before the walking (b…

Factors Associated with Walking to School Within a Feasible Walking Distance: The Key Role of Perceived Attractiveness of Walking Route.

BACKGROUND: Walking to school contributes to children's health and development, yet its prevalence has declined in recent decades. Identifying factors associated with walking to school is essential for developing effective interventions. This study aimed to determine a context-specific feasible walking distance for children aged 6-10 years in Porto, Portugal, and to examine factors associated with walking to school among children living within this distance. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 596 children. Home-to-school walking distances were calculated using OpenRouteService. Four …

Center Degenerated Walking-Primer PCR: A Novel and Universal Genome-Walking Method.

Enhancing the specificity and applicability of PCR-based genome-walking methods is highly desirable. A new and universal genome-walking tool, called center degenerated walking-primer PCR (CDWP-PCR), is presented in this study. CDWP-PCR involves adopting a center degenerated walking primer (cdWP) in the secondary/tertiary round of amplification. This cdWP is generated by degenerating the seven central nucleotides of the normal walking primer (nWP) used in primary PCR to NNNNNNN (where N includes the bases A, T, C, and G). Clearly, a partially complementary structure is formed between the two pr…

Prevention of downhill walking-induced muscle damage by non-damaging downhill walking.

PURPOSE: Mountain trekking involves level, uphill, and downhill walking (DW). Prolonged DW induces damage to leg muscles, reducing force generating ability and muscle coordination. These increase risks for more serious injuries and accidents in mountain trekking, thus a strategy to minimize muscle damage is warranted. It has been shown that low-intensity eccentric contractions confer protective effect on muscle damage induced by high-intensity eccentric contractions. This study tested the hypothesis that 5-min non-damaging DW would attenuate muscle damage induced by 40-min DW, but 5-min level …

"Feeling younger, walking faster": subjective age and walking speed in older adults.

Walking speed is a key vital sign in older people. Given the implications of slower gait speed, a large literature has identified health-related, behavioral, cognitive, and biological factors that moderate age-related decline in mobility. The present study aims to contribute to existing knowledge by examining whether subjective age, how old or young individuals experience themselves to be relative to their chronological age, contributes to walking speed. Participants were drawn from the 2008 and 2012 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS, N = 2970) and the 2011 and 2013 waves of the Na…

Walking on thin endometrium.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Endometrial thickness has been regarded a predictor of success in assisted reproductive technology cycles and it seems a common practice to cancel embryo transfer when it is below a cut-off. However, various cut-offs have been proposed without a causal relationship between endometrial thickness and embryo implantation being established, casting doubt on the current dogma. RECENT FINDINGS: Methodological limitations of the available studies on endometrial thickness are increasingly recognized and better designed studies do not demonstrate a cut-off value which requires cance

[Walking abnormalities in children].

Walking is a spontaneous movement termed locomotion that is promoted by activation of antigravity muscles by serotonergic (5HT) neurons. Development of antigravity activity follows 3 developmental epochs of the sleep-wake (S-W) cycle and is modulated by particular 5HT neurons in each epoch. Activation of antigravity activities occurs in the first epoch (around the age of 3 to 4 months) as restriction of atonia in rapid eye movement (REM) stage and development of circadian S-W cycle. These activities strengthen in the second epoch, with modulation of day-time sleep and induction of crawling aro…

Walking on four limbs: A systematic review of Nordic Walking in Parkinson disease.

Nordic Walking is a relatively high intensity activity that is becoming increasingly popular. It involves marching using poles adapted from cross-country skiing poles in order to activate upper body muscles that would not be used during normal walking. Several studies have been performed using this technique in Parkinson disease patients with contradictory results. Thus, we reviewed here all studies using this technique in Parkinson disease patients and further performed a meta-analysis of RCTs where Nordic Walking was evaluated against standard medical care or other types of physical exercise…

Walking modality, but not task difficulty, influences the control of dual-task walking.

During dual-task gait, changes in the stride-to-stride variability of stride time (STV) are suggested to represent the allocation of cognitive control to walking [1]. However, contrasting effects have been reported for overground and treadmill walking, which may be due to differences in the relative difficulty of the dual task. Here we compared the effect of overground and treadmill dual-task walking on STV in 18 healthy adults. Participants walked overground and on a treadmill for 120s during single-task (walking only) and dual-task (walking whilst performing serial subtractions in sevens) co…

Behavioral and neural correlates of imagined walking and walking-while-talking in the elderly.

Cognition is important for locomotion and gait decline increases the risk for morbidity, mortality, cognitive decline, and dementia. Yet, the neural correlates of gait are not well established, because most neuroimaging methods cannot image the brain during locomotion. Imagined gait protocols overcome this limitation. This study examined the behavioral and neural correlates of a new imagined gait protocol that involved imagined walking (iW), imagined talking (iT), and imagined walking-while-talking (iWWT). In Experiment 1, 82 cognitively-healthy older adults (M=80.45) walked (W), iW, walked wh…

Think the thought, walk the walk - social priming reduces the Stroop effect.

In the Stroop task, participants name the color of the ink that a color word is written in and ignore the meaning of the word. Naming the color of an incongruent color word (e.g., RED printed in blue) is slower than naming the color of a congruent color word (e.g., RED printed in red). This robust effect is known as the Stroop effect and it suggests that the intentional instruction - "do not read the word" - has limited influence on one's behavior, as word reading is being executed via an automatic path. Herein is examined the influence of a non-intentional instruction - "do not read the word"

Comparative accuracy of the figure-of-eight walk test and 10-meter walk test in classifying walking abilities in stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of walking abilities in stroke survivors is essential for designing effective rehabilitation strategies. Although the Figure-of-Eight Walk Test (F8WT) and the 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT) are widely used to evaluate different aspects of gait, their comparative effectiveness for classifying individuals as household or community has not been thoroughly investigated. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the F8WT and 10MWT in distinguishing between household and community walking abilities among stroke survivors. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysi…

Associations between walking difficulty, walking activity, and depression among community-dwelling older adults.

PURPOSE: This study explores how walking difficulty and activity relate to depression in older adults using data from the MOBILIZE Boston Study. METHODS: We analyzed data from 765 community-dwelling older adults from the study's baseline assessment. Depression was measured using the 20-item Hopkins Revision of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Walking difficulty and activity were self-reported based on the ability to walk, climb steps, and weekly walking distance. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the associations between difficulty walking, walking act…

Walking Stability and Kinematic Variability Following Motor Fatigue Induced by Incline Treadmill Walking.

Detecting motor fatigue during rigorous activities is essential for preventing injuries, falls, and over-exertion. While research has focused on developing fatigue indices using motion capture or wearable sensors, the method of inducing fatigue can impact movement patterns differently. This study compared the effects of whole-body motor fatigue induced by incline treadmill walking with localized fatigue induced by leg presses and isolated ankle movements, as investigated in our prior study. Twenty healthy young participants walked at 1.25 m/s for 5 min before (PRE) and after (POST) motor fatig…

Walking balance control in different settings: Effects of walking speed and biological sex.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has suggested that spatiotemporal step parameters differ between settings; however, it remains unclear how different settings influence walking balance control. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do settings and sex influence walking balance control during walking at different speeds for young adults? METHODS: Forty-two adults (21 male (23 ± 4 years), 21 female (24 ± 5 years)) completed overground walking trials in four settings: laboratory (10 m), hallway, indoor open, and outdoor pathway (all 20 m) at three self-selected speeds (slow, preferred, fast) following verbal ins…

Walking Beliefs in Women With Fibromyalgia: Clinical Profile and Impact on Walking Behavior.

Although exercise is essential for the treatment of fibromyalgia, adherence is low. Walking, as a form of physical exercise, has significant advantages. The aim of this article is to describe, in 920 women with fibromyalgia, the prevalence of certain walking beliefs and analyze their effects both on the walking behavior itself and on the associated symptoms when patients walk according to a clinically recommended way. The results highlight the high prevalence of beliefs related to pain and fatigue as walking-inhibitors. In the whole sample, beliefs are associated with an increased perception t…
